TUSCARAWAS - The 1st double overtime of the season was played here Tuesday night, with Tuscarawas (2-3) nipping Port Washington (2-5). The Broncos led all the way by close margins until 3 minutes were left in regulation time when the Purple Riders went ahead by 4 at 48-44. Port Washington tried to use stalling tactics to keep possession, but Rich Eckhardt stole the ball and went in for a layup and then Chuck Reichman popped in a 15-footer to deadlock the count. Ken Gay put the visitors ahead in the 1st extra period, but Roger Knisely again played the key role for the hosts. In the second extra period, Reichman cashed in twice from the free throw line as the visitors tried desperately to gain possession. Jim Bates put in a duce for the visitors with just a few seconds remaining. The victory is the 2nd in a row for the Dick Ronald-coached Broncos after 3 losses. "This was our best team effort of the season," Durham said, "The boys really hustled." Tuscarawas hit on 23 of 63 action shots for 36 percent and made 8 of 18 foul tries. Port Washington canned 20 of 62 from the floor for 32 percent and cashed in 12 times from the charity stripes in 24 attempts. The Broncos outrebounded the Purple Riders 35 to 16, with Jeff Maxwell pulling down 13. Bates hauled in 8 for the visitors. The Tuscarawas Reserves (5-0) blasted the Port Washington Reserves (2-3) 47-25.
