PORT WASHINGTON - An old and bitter rivalry will be resumed Friday night when the Purple Riders entertain the Tuscarawas Broncos.  Tuscarawas will attempt to bounce back from its 1st defeat of the year, suffered at Malvern Saturday, 52-51.  The Broncos  haven't had an easy time on the road, nipping Jewett in overtime in their other away game.  Other wins have come at home, over Midvale, 49-41 and Gnadenhutten 81-70.  The Purple Riders are 2-2, having beaten Zane Trace 40-35 and Newcomerstown 68-67.  Losses have been to powerful Madison of Guernsey County, 67-52 and ConottonValley 61-60.

Senior Greg Bender 5-8 Guard

67 - Midvale Gets 1st Win As They Nip Jewett 67-66 (12-6-66)

Bob Carlisle (32) of Midvale and Sam Thorp (13) of Jewett battle for a rebound during play at last night's game in the Blue Devil gymnasium.

MIDVALE - Down by 10 points with 3 minutes to play, the Midvale Blue Devils (1-2) launched a comeback and overtook Jewett here last night for the win.  The Blue Devils tied the game when Gene Ford swished a pair of foul shots with one minute to play.  With time running out the Devils went to the offensive again, an effort climaxed when Lee Eberly sank a foul shot with only one second remaining in the game.  It was the 1st victory of the 1966-67 season for Midvale, which entertains Guernsey County power, Madison, on Saturday night.

Mike DeMattio paced the Midvale attack by pouring in 23 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.  Lee Eberly was right behind him with 19 markers and 11 rebounds, while 6-1 Bob Carlisle snared 14 rebounds and scored 12 points.  Adrian Tharp's 16 and Nolan Hawkins' 14 were high for Jewett.  Bernie Wilson added 12.  Midvale made 28 of 67 field goal attempts and 11 of 26 free throws,  while Jewett hit 24 of 67 from the floor and 18 of 26 foul shots.

The Midvale Reserves (1-2) also won their 1st game of the season by downing the Jewett Reserves 62-56.

67 - Gnadenhutten Pins Lakeland 65-47 (12-6-66)

FREEPORT - The Raiders (0-3) will be seeking once again to break into the win column when they travel to Conotton Valley Friday night in their 4th effort of the season.  Their 3rd defeat came at the hands of the Gnadenhutten High School Indians (1-1) last night.  The Raiders did a fine job of containing the Indians chief warrior, Dan Jinks, but just couldn't stop Senior pivotman 6-1 Bill Kohl, who pumped for 22 or 5-10 guard Don Finnicum, who added 20.  Gnaden, after dropping their opener against Tuscarawas 81-70, could do no wrong.  The Indian teamsters pulled in a total of 33 rebounds, compared to 23 for the Raiders and listed only 12 turnovers.  They worked well against the press and worked the ball in close for the easy ones.  Although Jinks was held to 7 points, Coach Jim Lower feels he contributed more than his share to the victory by working the ball under the basket and setting up teammates for the easy ones.  Jinks, along with Wayne Martin, did an outstandig job on defense.

After the opening tipoff Gnadenhutten moved out in front by 6 before the Red Raiders broke into the scoring  column.  Lakeland then connected for 4 straight in their strongest effort of the game.  The Indians rallied and by the end of the 1st quarter the score was 16-4 in favor of Gnadenhutten.  The closest the Raiders came after that was a 9-point difference.  Scores by the quarters were 16-4, 32-21, 47-34 and the final 65-47.  High point man for Lakeland was Denny Luyster, who connected for 15,  teammate Link Simpson added 12 in their losing effort.  Gnadenhutten did an outstanding job shooting, hitting  on  27 of 51 attempts from the floor for a 53 percent shooting average.  They also hit on 11 of 15 foul shots. (There was no box score or any indication of the Reserve game outcome.)

67 - Tuscarawas Valley Burns Dover St. Joseph 60-44 (12-6-66)

"That one is on you," says referee Gene Hensel to Dover St. Joseph pivot man Dave Myers (52) during action in last night's game with Tuscarawas Valley.  Myers had just laid low the Trojans' Tom Shroyer (55).  Also pictured are Jeff Recchiuti (34) of the Ramblers and Dave Clugston (21) of the Trojans.

DOVER - A 29-point 4th period spurt after Dover St. Joseph (0-3) had cut a 15-point 3rd period lead to 2, propelled Tuscarawas Valley (1-0) to a triumph over the Ramblers in the Trojans' season opener last night in the Dover High Gym.  It was the 3rd straight set-back for the Ramblers who entertain Malvern St. Edward Friday night and Newcomerstown Saturday.  Except at the game's outset when it took a momentary lead, St. Joseph trailed throughout.  Tuscarawas Valley, which plays at Strasburg Friday, went on top 3-2 when Tom  Shroyer swished a foul shot.

The Trojans increased the lead to 15 points, 38-23 early in the 3rd stanza before the Ramblers began trimming it.  St. Joseph was behind 40-33 entering the final stanza and scored 6 consecutive points, the last a layup by Charlie Zitoto to slice the Trojan margin to 40-39.  Holding a slim  42-40 lead, the Trojans turned on the speed, hitting 11 points, 5 of them by Larry Adams, to wrap up the verdict.  Adams, who sat out much of the 2nd half with 4 fouls, tied Rambler Dave Myers for game scoring laurels as each tallied 17.

While Myers was the only Rambler in double figures, Adams received capable support from Tom  Shroyer and Jim  Burkhart, who had 16 and 10 points, respectively.  Tuscarawas Valley fired in 25 floor shots in 63 attempts for 39.7 percent and added 10 of 18 free throws.  St. Joseph made 18 of 62 for 25.8 percent and 8 of 17 from the foul line.

The Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (1-0) also picked up a win trouncing the Dover St. Joseph Reserves 41-22.

67 - On The Court With The Tuscarawas Valley Trojans

ZOARVILLE - Tuscarawas Valley, led by 2nd-year mentor Bill Frye, will be hoping to launch its 1966-67 season with a victory tonight when it meets Dover St. Joseph in the Dover High Gym.  Much of the Trojans bid for success this year will depend on Dick Harvey and Ray Nist, their 2 leading scorers during the 1965-66 season.  Both are 5-10 Seniors.  Harvey scored 150 points last year and Nist 148.  Nist; however, is not expected to see much action early on as he is recovering  from a knee operation.  Joining his duo are 2 other Senior lettermen:

Dave Clugston 5-9
Tom Shroyer 6-3

Both saw limited action in 1965-66's campaign with Clugston scoring 144 points and Shroyer accounting for 19.

Even though he has 4 veterans around which to build his squad, Coach Frye feels that any success the Trojans enjoy will also be dependent upon the performances of serveral other players.  He names:

Junior Larry Adams 6-1
Junior Jim Burkhart 6-1
Junior Curt Norris 6-0
Sophomore Tom Moore 5-9

Last year St. Joseph and Tuscarawas Valley split a pair of matches, the Ramblers winning the 1st one 49-47 and the Trojans the second, 64-48.  altogether the 2 teams have collided 6 times with the Trojans winning 4.

PORT WASHINGTON - Conotton Valley (2-1), behind as much as 10-1 in the 1st quarter and 20-8 at the 1st stop pulled a victory over Port Washington (2-2) out of the fire Saturday night.  When the Rockets fell behind 1st year Head Coach Allan Kennedy changed his defense as a remedial measure and it worked.  The Rockets trimmed the Rider margin to 27-24 at half-time and deadlocked the score 42-42 at the end of the 3rd period.

Ken Beamer led the winners with 24 points and Fred Strawser and Mike Risley scored 13 apiece.  Tops for Port was Tim Page's 19.  Greg Bender added 15 and Jeff Huston 11.  Port Washington made 26 of 60 field goal attempts for 40 percent and 10 of 13 foul shots.  The Rockets hit 20 times in 55 floor tries for 38 percent and 21 of 36 charity tosses.  The Riders lost both Page and Huston on fouls.  Port entertains Tuscarawas Friday night and travels to Gnadenhutten Saturday.  Conotton Valley hosts Lakeland Friday and is at Cadiz on Saturday.

SUGARCREEK - The Garaway Pirates (3-0) netted an easy win over the Newcomerstown Trojans (0-2) Saturday night, prepping for the big game against the Hiland Hawks next Saturday night here.  The Pirates were never to be denied victory as they jumped to a 12-8 first quarter lead.  The Trojans began moving in the 2nd quarter closing the gap to 21-18, then the Pirates man-to-man press defense proved to be disastrous and they led 26-19 at the half.  Garaway had a good night from the field hitting on 25 of 60 as compared to the 12 of 54 for the Trojans.  Both teams hit 50 percent of the free tosses.

Leading the scoring parade for the Pirates was Errol Miller with 19 and Don Richardson with 14.  Jeff Schmidt was the only man hitting double figures with 12 for Newcomerstown.  Ernie Triplett was the big man under the boards for the Trojans, pulling down 13 rebounds.  Kim Sedwick took care of the board work for the Pirates gathering in 12.  The Pirates have victories over Conotton Valley and Dover St. Joseph preceding the Trojan game.  The Trojans will be at Guernsey Catholic next Friday and at Dover St. Joseph on Saturday.

67 - Malvern Stops Tuscarawas Win Streak 52-51 (12-3-66)

MALVERN - Tuscarawas (3-1) staged a gigantic 4th quarter rally in an attempt to remain in the ranks of the unbeaten, but fell one point short as the Malvern Green Hornets came off with an upset victory to snap a 3-game Bronco winning streak.  Following a see-saw 1st half, the Broncos fell behind 41-31 entering the final frame.  Outscoring the hosts 17-7, the Broncos knotted the count with less than a minute to go, but Bucky Monroe's 2 foul shots with 5 seconds remaining in the contest gave the victors an insurmountable 52-49 lead.  John Bihari potted a field goal with one second to go, but was unable to draw the foul that could have tied the count.  It was the 3rd quarter which actually led to the Broncos' defeat.  They were able to score on only 2 of 15 action shots, while the Hornets were tallying 13 points to extend a 2-point halftime lead.

The Hornets defense keyed on high-scoring Brent Lehigh, who had garnered 77 points in the 1st three Bronco games.  His total output was limited to 10, far below his 25.6 average.  Lehigh also pulled down 10 rebounds.  Fred Rausch led the Bronco scoring, hitting on 7 field attempts and one foul shot for 15 points.  Tuscarawas coach Lyle Matlick lauded Rausch's defensive play on Hornet Bucky Munroe who was held to 7 markers.  Dan Wackerly of Malvern captured game scoring honors with 16 points and was followed by Glenn Clark's 12.  Tuscarawas led in rebounds 44-32 with Bihari, who scored 14 points, grabbing 11 to lead the way.  The Tuscarawas County combine was able to connect  on  only 18 of 61 action shots for 30 percent, while the Hornets hit on exactly one-third of their 60 shots.

The Malvern Reserves also stopped the Tuscarawas Reserves' (3-1) streak of 3 wins clipping them 36-34 completing the swept.

NEWCOMERSTOWN - The Newcomerstown Trojans (0-1) nearly pulled one out of the fire last night as they dropped a decision to the invading  Port Washington Purple Riders (2-1).  The Purple Riders led at all stops and was ahead by 11 points going into the last quarter as the Trojans began hitting the nets.  Newcomerstown used a man-to-man defense, but was unable to get their hands on the ball as the Riders held it for the final 14 seconds to ice the verdict.

The big guns for Port Washington were Greg Bender, Jerry Stephens, Tim Page and Jeff Huston who tallied 19, 14, 13 and 13 points, respectively.  The Trojans had 4 men in double figures.  Jeff Schmidt hit 21 followed by Ron Hurst with 17, Wit Parks with 12 and Bruce Widder with 11.  Senior Jim Hagen controlled the boards as he gathered in 16 rebounds for the Riders.  Schmidt pulled in 12 for the Trojans.  Port Washington was 36 percent from the field and Newcomerstown 30 percent.  The Riders were 14 of 22 from  the charity line and the Trojans 19 of 30.  Huston was lost to the riders late in thegame via the 5-foul rule.

67 - Strasburg Slams Midvale 63-35 (12-2-66)

Strasburg's Charles Jones lost his footing and went head over heels during action in the Tigers' game last night with Midvale.

STRASBURG - The Tigers (1-0), flying high under the wing of Senior forward John Studer, who snagged individual scoring, rebounding and assist honors, trounced the Midvale Blue Devils (0-2) in Strasburg's new gymnasium last night.  It was the Tigers' 1966-67 debut.  The game, although lopsided in score, was hard fought down the line with 28 personal fouls being called on the 2 teams.

Mike DeMattio, Midvale's high scorer for the night, ending with 12, fouled out with 7:10 remaining to be played.  Both Ed Rusk and Ed Yackey of Strasbur ran into foul trouble the 1st quarter and had to sit out much of the game.  Yackey, Senior pivotman, finished the game with 8 points and 10 rebounds, compared to Studer's 21 points and 10 rebounds.  Both had numerous assists, especially in the 1st quarter when they worked the ball under the basket with military precision.  Charles Jones dropped in 17 points for Coach Huggins' Tigers. The end of the 1st quarter found the Blue Devils on the short end of a 16-8 score and the Tigers had not yet begun to fight.  Half-time score was 28-18 and 3rd quarter 42-29.

After the opening tipoff, the Tigers quickly moved out in front on a layup by Charlie Jones.  With 2 minutes gone in the 1st quarter a layup by Studer put Strasburg out in front by 3, then Midvale's Tom Booth got into the picture with a corner jump shot to pull the Devils within one.  After that it was curtains.  Strasburg got 8 straight points, Midvale 4, the Tigers 8 again and a 2 pointer for Midvale rounded out 1st quarter scoring.  From that point on Strasburg simply increased its lead.  With 4 minutes remaining to be  played in the game the Tigers really showed their stuff.  The score was 49-35 when Midvale turned on the press.  The Tigers breezed through it, scoring last 16 straight points.

The Strasburg Reserves (1-0) run over the Midvale Reserves (0-2) 53-16 for their lopsided win.

67 - Garaway Clobbers Dover St. Joseph's 68-40 (12-2-66)

MIGHTIES RACE...Two of the  smallest men onthecourt at last night's Garaway-Dover St.  Joseph's game stge a race and it's difficult to tell who was beating  who at this point.  With the ball  is Garaway's Mike  Gerber,  while Rambler Mike Fragosse gives pursuit.

Battling for the ball during last night's Dover St. Joseph's-Garaway game were Jeff Recchiutti (35) of the Ramblers and Errol Miller (44) of the Pirates.  Also in on the action were Jim Range (55) of St. Joseph's and Garaway's Kim Sedwick.

SUGARCREEK - The Garaway Pirates (2-0) put on a dazzling display of shooting last night and in the process spoiled Dover St. Joseph's (0-1) Head Coach Jim Antonelli's debut at the Rambler helm.  The final score, after a close 1st half, turned out to be a rout.  Antonelli's combine will try to get on the victory path tonight when it travels to Kidron Christian.  Garaway will entertain Newcomerstown tonight.

At the game's outset it appeared that the contest was going to be a tight one.  But, Garaway, led by Erroll Miller and small Sophomoe Mike Gerber, started popping the roundball through the hoop, while the Ramblers were hampered by fouls.  Senior center Dave Myers and Sophomore Mike (Boots) Fragasse both got into real trouble, each having committed 3 fouls apiece in the 1st quarter.  Junior Mark Nelson and Sophomore Jim Range were in trouble at halftime with 6 between them.

Actually, Garaway might have run away with the game early if it might had been able to cash in on its opportujnities at the foul line.  The Pirates pulled out to a 12-point lead midway in  the 2nd stanza, but Nelson got the Ramblers going again, coming within 5 of the Pirates at halftime.  But, it was a different story in the 2nd half.  Garaway came out a new ball club in the 2nd half, determined to run away with the game and did.  With Sophomore center Kim Sedwick leading the parade, both scoring and rebounding, Garaway pulled out to a sizeable lead at the finish of the 3rd period.

Sedwick and Don Richardson controlled the boards throughout the game, with the final tally seeing Garaway pull down 36 caroms to St. Joe's 24.  Don Richardson had 10 and Sedwick 9.  Nelson led the Ramblers with seven.  The Rams, obviously showing the jitters, committed 24 turnovers.  Garaway potted 25 of 72 action shots for 34 percent, while the Ramblers could only find the range on 13 of 61 for a cold 22 percent.  From the charity stripe, Garaway converted 18 of 34 and St. Joe 14 of 22.

The rout was started earlier when the Garaway Reserves (2-0) took control of the Dover St. Joseph Reserves (0-1) 57-21.

67 - Tuscarawas Downs Gnadenhutten 81-70 (12-2-66)

Tuscarawas Broncos' John Bihari (44) and Brent Lehigh (20) have a 2 on 1 rebound situation on Gnaden's Bill Kohl during last night's game on the Tusky hardwoods.  Also in the action for the Indians is Dan Jinks (23).

TUSCARAWAS - The high-riding Broncos (3-0) corralled their 3rd consecutive victory, something they haven't been able to do since 1959, last night when they downed the Gnadenhutten Indians (0-1).  In 1959 the Broncos, led  by current Lakeland basketball coach Gary Caviness, opened their season 4 straight wins, a mark this year's team could match when it travels to Malvern tonight.  The victories were over Midvale, Gnadenhutten, Newcomerstown and Stone Creek and the Broncos went on to chalk up a 12-8 season.

Last night Gnadenhutten (0-1), in launching its 1966-67 season, grabbed leads of 15-11 at the 1st stop and 37-32 at intermission.  But, Tuscarawas got rolling in the 2nd half when the Indians' press resulted in Bill Kohl and Don Finnicum being benched on  fouls.  Brent Lehigh continued to spark the Bronco attack, pumping in 26 points.  Fred Rausch and John Bihari also figured big for the Broncos, racking up 19 and 18, respectively.  Lehigh also was Tusky's big man on  the boards, grabbing 18.  Kohl gathered in 14 for the Indians.  Dan Jinks, who scored 477 points for the Indians last season, apparently didn't lose his touch, for he fired in 31 on 10 goals and 11 charity tosses.  Kohl scored 21 and Terry Huebner 14.  Tuscarawas hit on 40 percent of its shots from the field and the Indians on 28 percent.  The Tribe was 24 for 36 at the foul line and Tuscarawas 19 of 32.  The Tuscarawas Reserves (3-0) continued their winning ways by tripping up the Gnadenhutten Reserves (0-1) 36-20.

67 - Tuscarawas Rolls Over Midvale 49-41 (11-25-66)

John Bihari and Brent Lehigh of Tuscarawas, corner Midvale's Mike DeMattio during last night's action in the Bronco gymnasium.

Tuscarawas' Brent Lehigh leaps high to pull donw one of 16 rebounds he grabbed last night against Midvale.  Blue Devil defenders are Lee Eberly (25) and Bob Carlisle (33).  Also in on the action for Tuscarawas is Fred Rausch (10).

TUSCARAWAS - Midvale (0-1) is no longer king in southern county league basketball circles.  This was the cry of the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) last night following a shocking 8-point victory over the always-mighty Devils.  The win was a big one for first-year coach Lyle Matlick, who served as an assistant to Blue Devil mentor Pete Hilliard several years.  The Broncos appeared to be in mid-season form and led by as much as 20 points before the Devils closed the gap in the final minutes.  The victory ended a 10-game Tuscarawas losing streak to Midvale.  The last time the Broncos defeated the Blue Devils was on January 20, 1961 when they took a 61-56 triumph.

The victors completely dominated play, employing a sticky man-to-man defense and were never in serious trouble following a see-saw 1st quarter.  They forced the Devils to take the outside shot, which caused the losers to hit on only 14 of 73 action shots for a poor 19.2 percent.  Controlling the boards, the Broncos held quarter leads of 7-6, 27-20 and 40-27.  It was Brent Lehigh who was the thorn in Midvale's side all night, as he popped in 23 points hitting 11 of 18 action shots and came through with 16 rebounds, 14 in the crucial 2nd half.  All told, the Broncos trailed only 2 times at the outset of the contest.  Holding a slim 19-16 lead midway in the 2nd frame, Lehigh scored 6 points near the end of the half to give the winners a 27-20 halftime margin they never relinquished.  Midvale, hit hard with fouls, saw veteran Mike DeMattio sidelined with 2:15 remaining in the half after he picked up his fourth foul.  He returned at the beginning of the 4th quarter, but was guilty of charging with 4:37 to go to end with 8 points to his credit.  The Broncos just kept pouring it on in the 2nd half as Lehigh controlled the boards and scored 7 points in a 14-point surge midway in the final stanza to extend a 42-27 lead to 49-29 with 2:55 left in the game.  For the night the winners hit on 19 of 55 action shots for a fine 34-5 percent.

Fred Rausch also came through with a fine performance, garnering 11 points, 8 of them in the go-ahead 2nd frame before fouling out with 54 seconds to go.  John Bihari of Tuscarawas was forced to leave the floor with 4:24 remaining in the 2nd quarter with 4 fouls.  He sat out the remainder  of the half and all of the 3rd frame before being inserted with just over 2 minutes left.  Leading the fruitless cause for the Devils was Bob Carlisle, who canned 15 markers after going 0-8 in the 1st quarter.  Lee Eberly followed with 10 points.  The Devils hit on 13 of 26 foul shots for an even 50 percent, while the victors were cashing in on 11 of 18 charity tosses for 61.1 percent.  The Broncos will try to make it 2 in a row tonight when they travel to Jewett, while the Devils will be preparing to meet powerful Strasburg next.

The Reserves made it a clean sweep for the Broncos, overcoming a 10-point deficit in the 3rd quarter to post a 39-35 win.  Butch McCauley, whose clutch shots in the fading minutes were the key to the win, potted 10 points.  Phil Simmons led the young Broncos (1-0) with 11 markers, while Ted Badertscher led Midvale (0-1) with 11.
