67 - Strasburg Slams Midvale 63-35 (12-2-66)

Strasburg's Charles Jones lost his footing and went head over heels during action in the Tigers' game last night with Midvale.

STRASBURG - The Tigers (1-0), flying high under the wing of Senior forward John Studer, who snagged individual scoring, rebounding and assist honors, trounced the Midvale Blue Devils (0-2) in Strasburg's new gymnasium last night.  It was the Tigers' 1966-67 debut.  The game, although lopsided in score, was hard fought down the line with 28 personal fouls being called on the 2 teams.

Mike DeMattio, Midvale's high scorer for the night, ending with 12, fouled out with 7:10 remaining to be played.  Both Ed Rusk and Ed Yackey of Strasbur ran into foul trouble the 1st quarter and had to sit out much of the game.  Yackey, Senior pivotman, finished the game with 8 points and 10 rebounds, compared to Studer's 21 points and 10 rebounds.  Both had numerous assists, especially in the 1st quarter when they worked the ball under the basket with military precision.  Charles Jones dropped in 17 points for Coach Huggins' Tigers. The end of the 1st quarter found the Blue Devils on the short end of a 16-8 score and the Tigers had not yet begun to fight.  Half-time score was 28-18 and 3rd quarter 42-29.

After the opening tipoff, the Tigers quickly moved out in front on a layup by Charlie Jones.  With 2 minutes gone in the 1st quarter a layup by Studer put Strasburg out in front by 3, then Midvale's Tom Booth got into the picture with a corner jump shot to pull the Devils within one.  After that it was curtains.  Strasburg got 8 straight points, Midvale 4, the Tigers 8 again and a 2 pointer for Midvale rounded out 1st quarter scoring.  From that point on Strasburg simply increased its lead.  With 4 minutes remaining to be  played in the game the Tigers really showed their stuff.  The score was 49-35 when Midvale turned on the press.  The Tigers breezed through it, scoring last 16 straight points.

The Strasburg Reserves (1-0) run over the Midvale Reserves (0-2) 53-16 for their lopsided win.
