NEW PHILADELPHIA - Tuscarawas (9-11) had its back to the wall from the outset against Tuscarawas Valley (13-6), falling behind by 7 points at the initial stop.  Coach Aaron Miller's charges, who beat Garaway 59-57 in the opening round of the tournament Thursday, had 2 field goals nullified in the final quarter because of charging violations.  Tuscarawas Valley's 6-5 center, Gary Ferren, popped in 4 fielders in the first 8 minutes of play to give his club an 18-11 margin at the stop.  He failed to score a point the rest of the game, setting out more than half of the contest due to personal foul trouble.  He finally was whistled out with 4:03 left to be played in the final frame.  Bob Heller's club received an additional jolt when All-League selection Paul Shipbaugh drew his 5th personal with 3:24 left in the game and his club leading 50-43.  The Trojans forced the Broncos to shoot from outside most of the way, Tuscarawas hitting on  only 19 of 76 action attempts for a cold 24.6 percent.  Tuscarawas Valley, sparked by Shipbaugh, canned 23 of 63 for a good 36.5 percent.  Shipbaugh took scoring honors for Tuscarawas Valley with 18 points.  Dave Widder added 13 to the Trojan cause.  Bob Burris got 10.  Fred Burmich topped Tuscarawas with 20 markers, getting all of his team's field goals in the 1st quarter (4) and the first 5 before Phil Caldwell hit in the 2nd stanza.  He was the only Bronco in double figures.  Tuscarawas outrebounded Tuscarawas  Valley, 34 to 22.  Jeff Maxwell and Roger Knisely led the Broncos with 9 each.  Bob Romig pulled down 6.  Ferren topped the Trojans with 6 and  Ed Crawford grabbed 4.  Tuscarawas Valley has now won 9 games in succession.

NOTE:  The basketball season ABRUPTLY ends here!  There appears to be a BLIP in the research.  The Daily Times and The Daily Reporter are missing the months of March and April of 1963.  Oddly, these same 2 months are also missing at The Coshocton Tribune.

But, here is how the tournament worked out:  Tuscarawas Valley (14-6) beat the Midvale Blue Devils (15-5)...score unknown for their 10th straight victory.  Then Strasburg (16-4) picked up another victory over Port Washington (11-10)...64-42 for the final showdown between Strasburg and Tuscarawas Valley for the Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball Tournament Championship.  Drumroll please.........Strasburg (17-4) nosed out Tuscarawas Valley (14-7) by a score of 58-57.

In the Sectional Tournament, the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (14-8) lost to Dennison St. Mary's...score unknown.  Strasburg (25-5) won two games in the Sectional and one game in the Regional, while losing to Adena 65-59 in the District Tournament.

And so ends the basketball season and we pick up the rest of the school year by dropping into the middle of the Spring baseball season in May of 1963.

63 - Strasburg Handles Stone Creek 45-32 (2-24-63)

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Inability to take advantage of easy shots prevented Stone Creek (5-16) from recording one of the biggest upsets in the history of the county tournament.  Playing deliberate ball, Coach Ken Lawhun's Panthers worked through the Strasburg (15-4) defense with precision, only to miss 7 "bunnies" in the 1st half and 9 for the game.  Coach Warren Binder's "Tenacious Tigers," on the other hand were forced to keep outside most of the game.  Both teams hit for a good percentge in the initial quarter, Stone Creek canning 5 of 8 action shots and 2 of 3 charities.  Strasburg made 6 of 9 fielders, but didn't get a foul try as the Panthers weren't whistled until 5:45 of the second stanza.  Vic Gessner put the 1st points on the board, giving Strasburg a 2-0 lead.  Verle Endlich of the Panthers then sneaked in for a layup and was fouled, making the move pay off in a 3-pointer.  The Tigersd' John Peters, who canned 2 of 4 action shots in the 1st period despite a broken finger, hit from the corner to put his mates back in front, 4-3.  All-League selection Jim Billman drilled in a close shot to put Stone Creek back on top, but Don Wallick retaliated for Strasburg.  Ed Wallace then hit for a fielder and a charity, giving the Panthers an 8-6 lead.  Verle Endlich made it 10-6 with a duce.  The 1st period ended in a 12-12 deadlock.  Two-year All-League choice Adrian Edie took charge for Strasburg in the 2nd period, scoring 8 of his club's 9 points.  Don Wallick got the only other one at the foul line.  Edie canned 3 of 4 action shots and 2 of 3 charities in that period as the Tigers went from a 14-13 margin into a 21-13 cushion and coasted from there on, posting a 21-15 advantage at the half and 32-21 after 3 cantos.  Strasburg, which was upset 44-42 by Baltic in last year's event and had not won a county tournament game since a 59-53 decision over Midvale in 1960, hit on 19 of 36 action shots for a hot 52.7 percent and  made 7 of 10 charities.  Stone Creek, bidding for its 1st win in the tournament since a 76-44 nod over Strasburg  in 1959, canned just 13 of 45 for a weak 28.8 percent and popped in 6 of 13 foul tries.  Edie had 6 of 10 action shots and Peters 6 of 11 for the Tigers.  Stone Creek outrebounded Strasburg 25 to 21.  Verle Endlich topped the Panthers with 8.  Wallace and Billman both grabbed 5.  Don Wallick led the Tigers with 10 and Edie got 5.  Adrian Edie of the Tigers, was high for the game with 14 points.  Don Peters hit 13, while Don Wallick got 11.  For Stone Creek, Verle Endlich was the only individual to hit double figures for the team, 10 points.

63 Tuscarawas Stars

PHOTO:  TOP ROW - Dean DeMattio (left) of Midvale, Russ McGlothlin of Tuscarawas, John Peters of Strasburg and Bob Byers of Midvale.  MIDDLE ROW - Don Deetz (left) of Garaway, Adrian Edie of Strasburg and Bruce Kohl of Gnadenhutten.  BOTTOM ROW - Dick Gerber (left) of Baltic, Tom Loader of Port Washington, Paul Shipbaugh of Tuscarawas Valley and Cliff Endlich of Stone Creek.

DOVER - Co-champion Strasburg and Midvale each placed 2 performers on the Annual Tuscarawas County Class "A" League All-Star Basketball Team named today by coaches in the 9-club circuit.  Every school is represented.  The elite group consists of 11 players...5 Seniors, 5 Juniors and one Sophomore.  Diminutive Adrian Edie of Strasburg is the only repeater from last season.  Joining Edie are teammate John Peters, Dean DeMattio and Bob Byers of Midvale, Dick Gerber of Baltic, Don  Deetz of Garaway, Bruce Kohl of Gnadenhutten, Tom Loader of Port Washington, Cliff Endlich of Stone  Creek, Russ McGlothlin of Tuscarawas and Paul Shipbaugh of Tuscarawas Valley.  In previous years, the All-County teams were not announced until the finals of the tournament.  This season, in addition to presenting trophies at the tournament, the league's Most Valuable Player will be announced.  An all-tournament team also will be selected.

McGlothlin, DeMattio and Kohl are the tallest cagers on the team, all standing 6-2, with Edie the shortest at 5-6.  The "stars" as a whole, scored 3,226 points in 169 league games, an average of 19.08 per contest.  DeMattio, who already has set a new season mark at Midvale with 482 points, was top scorer in league competition with 244 for an average of 30.50 per clash.  A Junior, he has 633 over a 2-year span.  The hot-shooting Blue Devil's top effort this campaign was a 44-point outburst against Baltic on  December 21.  He topped 30 points in 4 other games, 3 in league competition.  He already has established a new regular season scoring mark at Midvale.  Byers is the second leading scorer for Midvale, having 225 points this season and 565 over 4 years.  His top effort was 21 against Scio in non-league play.  Edie, "quarterback" of Strasburg's well-oiled machine, is the top point-producer on that club with 300 and 701 for 3 years.  Edie hit the 30-mark twice this season, against Tuscarawas in loop activity and against Midvale in non-league play the opening game of the campaign.  Peters, considered the best Strasburg shot, has 295 this season and 455 over 3 years.  Gerber, who tied the Tuscarawas County single game scoring record with 53 points against Union on December 18, has poured in 987 points over 3 season, getting 456 this campaign.  Both are apparent records at Baltic.  Deetz, also the leading scorer on his team, set a school mark with 40 points against Dennison January 19 and has 569 over 2 years.  Kohl, the only regular back at Gnadenhutten this campaign, has 305 points despite missing the last 2 games and has 519 over 3 years, getting only 3 as a freshman.  Loader, seconed only to Larry Laisure for top scoring honors at Port Washington, tallied 181 this season, giving him 339 over 3 years.  Endlich, who has been hotter in league play than non-league, has scored 207, giving him 616 over 4 years.  McGlothlin, a Freshman whiz last season when he tallied 166 points, has 185 this campaign.  Shipbaugh, although getting only 2 points in a brief appearance with the varsity last season, has been a mainstay of the Tuscaraswas Valley attack this campaign, pouring in 229.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - A bad 3rd quarter spelled disaster for Coach Errol Jacobs'  Baltic Eagles (9-12).  Behind 14-10 at the 1st stop, the Eagles outscored Don Durham's Purple Riders (11-9) 21 to 14 in the 2nd stanza to go ahead 31-28 at the half.  But, Baltic managed  to get just 5 points in the 3rd period, while APort was canning 15.  The  Purple Riders led 43-36 after 3 stops and coasted home.  Balanced scoring was the difference, although Port actually won at the foul lines, sinking 16 of 29 to 6 of 13 for Baltic.  Both teams had 24 field goals, Port in 56 attempts for 42.8 percent and Baltic in 53 tries for 45.2 percent.  Four Purple Riders hit in double figures, topped by Paul Schwab who got 17.  Tom  Loader and Roger Beighley both got 13 and Wayne Blind added 10.  Dick Gerber was a one-man show for Baltic, popping in 24 markers.  Guy Limbacher added 10.

NEW PHIADELPHIA - Shifting into a zone defense in the 2nd quarter, Strasburg (16-4) roared back from a 12-9 1st quarter deficit to a commanding 22-12 advantage by midway in the 2nd stanza to break the game wide open.  The scoreless streak of some seven minutes by the Port Washington Purple Riders (11-10) was all the Bengals needed as their alert zone and aggressive offense stopped the Riders cold.  Port made a shambles of the Strasburg man-to-man defense in the 1st stanza to lead all but one minute of the period.  But, the 1-2-2 zone put forth by Strasburg in the 2nd quarter turned the tide for keeps.  Conrolling the boards throughout, Strasburg snagged 33 missed shots as compared to only 19 rebounds by Port.  Coach Warren Binders "Grinders" rushed to a 22-16 halftime lead and rolled on to a 46-25 3rd quarter advantage in posting the victory.  A big 24-point 3rd quarter while limiting Port to but 9 points was the tale-telling eight minutes of play.  Port scored only 4 points in the 2nd period on 1 of 10 field goal attempts.  Don Wallick led the victors with 22 points, while John Peters chimed in with 14, including 10 in the 2nd half and Vic Gessner hit 11.  Sophomore Rock Van Fossen led the board play with 9 snags.  Wallick got 7 more and Peters six.  Tom Loader led Port on the boards with 5 rebounds, while Ken Gay led the scoring with 16 points and Paul Schwab hit 10.  From the field Strasburg netted 29 of 66 shots for 44 percent, while Port canned 17 of 46 action attempts for 37 percent.

63 - Midvale Ends Gnaden Season 61-52 (2-21-63)

PHOTO:  Dean DeMattio (44) of Midvale missed this rebound, but he pulled down more than his share in addition to scoring 31 points.  Battling for ball are Bob Byers (32) of Midvale and Bruce Kohl (31) of Gnadenhutten.  Watching the action are Ed Allensworth (45) of Gnadenhutten and Tom Daniels and Tom McPherson (30) of Midvale.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - As has been the case so many times this season, Dean DeMattio was the big gun for Midvale (15-4) in its victory over Gnadenhutten (7-14).  The 6-2 Junior sharpshooter missed his 1st action shot, but then canned 12 in a row before missing his final two.  He also drilled home 5 of 8 free tosses to take game scoring honors with 31 points.  Midvale spurted to quick 4-1, 10-1 and 12-3 leads before taking a 12-8 cushion at the 1st stop.  Coach Pete Hilliard's charges retained a 5 or 6-point spread for the 1st half of the 2nd quarter until Gnadenhutten, behind 22-15, caught fire and tallied 8 straight markers to go ahead 23-22 at 3:31.  Midvale; however, was ahead 31-27 at intermission and retained a 6 or 7 point margin the rest of the game, being ahead 49-43 at the 3rd quarter rest.  Midvale canned 25 of 58 action shots for 43.1 percent and made 11 of 22 charities.  Gnadenhutten hit on 21 of 46 field goal tries for 45.6 percent and popped in 10 of 17 free tosses.  Backing up DeMattio in the point department was Don Basquin with 12, the only other Blue Devil in double figures.  Bruce Kohl of Gnadenhutten also put on quite a display of shooting before twisting his ankle with about 20 seconds left in the game.  He got 20 points, Don  Garrett added 12.  (Kohl had missed the final 2 regular season games the Indians played due to a sore ankle.)  Bob Byers and Basquin led Midvale in the rebound department, both getting 9.  DeMattio pulled down 8.  Ed Allensworth and Kohl topped Gnadenhutten.

63 - Tusky Nips Garaway 59-57 In Overtime (2-21-63)

PHOTO:  Up for a rebound go Randy Miller (33) of Garaway and Ivan Summers (42) of Tuscarawas.  Ready to get into the action are Frank Miller (left) of Garaway and Phil  Caldwell (34), Roger Knisely (44) and Bob Romig (behind Summers) of Tuscarawas.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Hustle and good shooting provided big dividends for Coach Aaron Miller's Tuscarawas Broncos (9-10).  Playing without the services of 6-2 regular Russ McGlothlin, an All-County selection this season, the Broncos got far fewer action shots than Joe Richards' Pirates (8-13), but made them count, hitting on 18 for a fine 41.8 percent.  (McGlothlin received a sprained ankle in practice early in the week and  will be out of action for the rest of the campaign.)  Tuscarawas actually won at the foul lines, sinking 23 of 38 to only 13 of 31 for Garaway.  The Pirates took 78 action flings, but made just 22 for a weak 28.2 percent.  Garaway took a narrow 15-14 lead at the initial stop, but Tuscarawas went ahead 28-26 at the half and held on to a slim 38-37 advantage after 3 halts.  After the 2 teams exchanged buckets for the first 4 minutes  of the final frame, Garaway, with the score tied 44-all, racked up 2 quick baskets to take a 48-44 cushion.  Tuscarawas wasn't to be outdone, using a clinging defense and a fast break to mark up 10 straight points to vault into a seemingly comfortable 54-48 cushion with only 1:56 left to be played.  Bob Romig, Fred Burmich and Phil Caldwell led the surge.  Geof Stevanus then took charge for Garaway, sinking a fielder and 2 free tosses to cut the deficit to 54-52.  Substitute Bill Richardson then gave his club new life with a 2-pointer, sending the game into an extra 3 minutes of action.  Caldwell hit twice from the foul line to start the overtime session and then Burmich connected on a field goal, giving Tuscarawas a 58-54 margin.  Ed Mueller canned a free toss for Garaway and then, after Caldwell again  popped in a foul try, Don Deetz drilled home a deuce to cut the deficit to 2 points, 59-57.  Eight seconds were left when Deetz took the ball out of bounds after a timeout.  After getting the ball back again, Deetz misssed from the corner.  The gun sounded, but, a foul was called against the Broncos, Garaway's Mueller going to the line with a one-and-one situation.  He missed.  Phil Caldwell lead Tuscarawas and picked up game honors by dropping in 23 points.  Fred Burmich followed with 15.  For Garaway, Don Deetz fired in 15 points with Goef Stevanus and John Spear following with 12 and 10 respectiveley.

63 - Down The Line With Dan Kopp (2-19-63)

DOVER - One of these days we hope to have an accurate list of records for all Tuscarawas County teams and individuals.  Slowly but surely we are realizing our goal.  In a story on the 1962-63 Tuscarawas County All-League Team, it was pointed out that Dick Gerber of Baltic may hold both the season and career scoring records here.  A check through the "morgue" revealed that isn't exactly correct.  We found John Rice had tallied 1,564 points over 4 seasons, his best output being 405 in 1957-58.  Gerber now has 965, with his top effort being 456 this campaign.  We also came up with another record we thought would interest many fans.  According to a check made on the back editions of the Daily Reporter, Strasburg won 50 straight league games and 41 in a row at home, the streaks both ending at the start of the 1957-58 season.  Strasburg lost its opener 50-43 to Beach City that season at home and was upended 67-61 by Baltic in its initial league engagement of the campaign.  The win by Baltic, by the way, was the 1st for an Eagle team over Strasburg in 18 years, the last one being a 30-29 decision in 1939-40.

MIDVALE - One of the big surprises of the year, Midvale (7-1) (14-4) virtually sewed up its co-league title in the 1st quarter exploding for a 24-8 lead in the initial 8 minutes of play with Port Washington (5-3) (9-8).  Coach Pete Hilliard's Blue Devils, with only one regular back from last year's co-league title holders and one other letterman, were never in trouble.  Their pressing defense was credited with getting Midvale off and running.  Having previously set a new school scoring mark for regular season play, Junior Dean DeMattio added to his total with a 31-point performance, giving him 582 for the season.  DeMattio was the sixth-man for Midvale last year.  Bob Byers, the only regular of last season, chimed in with 20 points.  Don Basquin chipped in with 14 important markers and Sophomore Tom Daniels netted 12 and furnished a big hand on the boards.  Ken Gay topped Port with 17 points.  Wayne Blind added 10.  The Devils hit 8 of 18 in the first quarter surge and ended with 36 for 73 from the field.  Port swished 19 of 47 action shots.  The Midvale Reserves (14-3) started the night off by blasting the Port Washington Reserves (7-10) 43-25.
