63 - Port Washington Upsets Garaway 51-45 (12-21-62)

PORT WASHINGTON - Coach Don Durham laid the credit for Port Washington's gleaming victory over Garaway (1-1) (4-2) here last night on a great zone  defense and running game.  After a nip-and-tuck 3 quarters of play, the lead switching hands several times, the Purple Riders (1-1) (4-3) outscored the Pirates 16 to 10 in the final canto.  The point difference came at the foul line as the Riders cashed in 19 times on 38 chances as compared to only 11 of 20 by Garaway.  The Pirates won the field goal category 17 to 16.  The victory was made even more illustrious as it made the crowning of the basketball queen and her court a happy one.  Selected by the players, Kathie Thomas reigned over the game as the 1963 queen.  Her attendants were Elva Smith, Shelia Miller, Rita Taylor and Linda Mathews.  In that crucial 4th stanza personal fouls caught up with the Pirates.  Coach Joe Richards crew lost 5 players by the foul route.  Whistled out were Randy Miller, Frank Miller, Don  Deetz, Geof Stevanus and Jim Spear.  Paul Schwab took game honors for the Riders with 17 points.  Larry Laisure chipped in 11 and Ken Gay 10.  Frank Miller led Garaway with 15 and  Randy Miller had 13.  High-scoring Deetzs ws held to 9 points, his lowest total of the season.  The Reserve game was won by Garaway and the Junior High game was won by Port Washington.  There were no statistics reported.
