60 - Tribe Wins On Rebound Goal With 3 Seconds To Go 70-68 (12-23-59)

GNADENHUTTEN - Those who like their basketball exciting could ask for little more than the nip-and-tuck contest staged here last night as the host Indians (4-4) and Blue Devils of Midvale (3-5) locked horns in a battle royal. After going nearly 4 quarters of even play, the hosts finally pulled it out of the fire on a spine-tingling rebound shot by Junior Bill Blickensderfer with only 3 seconds on the clock, winning by two points. Midvale, which led nearly all the way, held a 35-28 lead at halftime. The Devils led 68-66 with 31 seconds showing on the clock. A drive by Ray Rank knotted the count at 68-all. Without getting a shot, Midvale relinquished the ball to Gnadenhutten with only 15 seconds left. A shot by Rank bounced off the hoop, but Blickensderfer followed up the attempt and dropped it in from inside the key. The lead changed hands a total of 9 times in the hotly contested game as Midvale sought to gain revenge over the only school that had defeated the Devils in regular season play last year. Scoring honors went to Midvale's promising Sophomore Neal Beans who hit for 22 points. The southpaw hit a phenomenal 10 of 13 shots from the field. Ron Breniser chipped in with 14, Warren Leggett had 15 and Ron Kaderly 13. John Hall led the attack for coach Bob Gaume's crew with 19, while Rank hit 18, Blickensderfer 13 and Carl Dichler 11. Midvale hit 48.5 percent on 30 of 62 action attempts, while Gnaden hit 46.8 percent on 30 of 64 heaves. It was Gnaden's third straight win. The Gnaden Reserves (3-5) also won their game by downing the Midvale Reserves (4-4) 33-23.

STONE CREEK - Stone Creek (0-8) was still without a victory today following a loss to invading Baltic (4-5) Saturday night. The Eagles took an early lead and were never headed, rolling to quarter margins of 17-7, 35-21 and 57-31. Baltic's scoring aces, John Rice and Gary Gerber, were hampered in the game. Rice returned to action following a siege of influenza, while Gerber played less than a quarter because of a pulled muscle. Taking up the scoring slack for the Eagles was Larry Ladrach and Larry Lautenschleger with 15 points apiece. Gary Mast had 13 and Rice added 11. Topping the hosts was Gale Sauser with 17 points. Larry Lorenz followed with 11. Stone Creek is at Garaway tomorrow night, while the Eagles don't return to action until 1960. In the Reserve game, Baltic (8-1) prevaled over Stone Creek (1-6) 51-20.

60 - Hiland Ends Garaway Victory Streak 60-56 (12-21-59)

WALNUT CREEK - Garaway (7-1) was dropped from the elite unbeaten group here Saturday night, dropping an exciting overtime decision to the Hiland Hawks (7-0). Garaway entered the final period with a 12-point deficit. It was climaxed with 28 seconds remaining in the game when Koran Zehnder connected on a jump shot. The Hawks then played for the last shot, but it was blocked by the Pirates just as the final buzzer sounded. Hiland's Gene Gerber scored first in the overtime and Zehnder came back to tie the score 56-56. Gerber then hit on a fielder and added 2 foul shots for the Hawks' victory margin. Gerber paced the win with 11 goals and 8 free throws for 30 points. Linus Miller added 11. High for the Pirates was Zehnder with 21. Teammates Jim Gerber and Charles Stingel followed with 11 and 10, respectively. The two teams will collide again February 9 at Garaway. Hiland returns to action tomorrow night when it tangles with Killbuck in a Holmes County Class "A" League encounter, while the Pirates entertain Stone Creek Wednesday night. The Hiland Reserves also won over the Garaway Pirates (5-3) 40-34.

Finally finding the range, the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-2) (3-4) have now put together 2 straight victories. Four men hit for double figures for Coach Bob Gaume's Tribe which made 52.4 percent from the field. The Indians were led by John Hall's 24 markers, while Ray Rank followed with 21 and Bill Blickensderfer and Ron Clark followed with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Larry Hagan was tops for Port (1-3) (4-4) with 11, while Jim Bender hit 10. Coach Dick King's quintet, who Tuesday night upended Tuscarawas, lost most of its board strength too as Gnaden's Hall and Rank shared the spotlight in this department. Gnaden grabbed 32 rebounds, while Port snared 16. The Port Washington Reserves (4-4) put a hurt on the Gnaden Reserves (2-5) 37-28.

In winning their second straight game this season, Midvale's Blue Devils (2-1) (3-4) had a relatively easy time in downing the Stone Creek Panthers (0-3) (0-7). The Devils had control throughout the game and administered a stingy defensive press to boom in front 27-11 in the first quarter. Ron Breniser was the high scorer, potting 29 for the victors, while Ron Kaderly had his best night with 14 and Neal Beans had 11. Larry Lorenz led Stone Creek with 19, Merle Degen hit 14, while Larry Stephon had 10. Midvale will move to Gnadenhutten Tuesday for its next start, while Stone Creek will host Baltic tonight. 60 - Tusky Scores Only 4 Points In 3rd Quarter In 56-45 Loss (12-19-59)

Strasburg (2-1) (4-3) showed overall improvement in its victory over Tuscarawas and , according to Coach Warren Binder, may finally be arriving. The Tiger defense was particularly outstanding as it picked up 31 rebounds off the defensive backboards. It also limited the Broncos (2-1) (4-2) to 48 attempts from the field. Strasburg played without regular Walt Krantz, who is sidelined with a bad virus. However, Krantz attended the game in street clothes and was taken home immediately following the battle. Gary Caviness continued with his red hot shooting for Tuscarawas as he poured in 27 points. He was the only Bronco in double figures as Strasburg concentrated its efforts on stopping Tuscarawas as a team rather than pick on any individual. Tuscarawas' downfall came in the third period when it scored only 4 points. The Broncos hit on 15 of the 48 shots for 31 percent. Strasburg, paced by Frank Wallick and Bill Seese with 15 points each, meshed 21 of 54 from the field for 38 percent. Seese went out of the game in the third period and Wallick followed in the fourth stanza with five fouls each. The Tuscarawas Reserves (6-0) continued their winning ways by stopping the Strasburg Reserves (4-3) 39-21. In the first game of the night, the Strasburg Junior High team crushed the Tuscarawas Junior High team 46-6.

60 - Garaway Remains No.1 In Tuscarawas County Class "A" 77-68 (12-19-59)

Garaway (3-0) (7-0) matched Tusky Valley's speed and then took a big advantage of the backboards to send the Trojans (1-1) (4-1) to their first defeat of the season after 5 wins. The Pirates, who tangle with Hiland on the latter's floor tonight, was in high gear right from the opening whistle, piling up a lead that proved insurmontable for the Trojans. Coach Jim Stull's charges fired the nets for 9 of 20 field attempts and burst into a first period lead of 21-12. TV never quite recovered. The closest the Trojans came was at 5:00 of the first stanza when they knotted the count at 7-7. There on out they were never closer than 7 points. Stull was satisfied with the victory. "The boys certainly deserved to win. They played their hearts out." Trojan mentor Bob Heller also had words of praise for the victors. "They have a real fine team. We missed some shots that we should have had - but then we have another crack at them before the season is over." Balance was another reason for the Pirate victory. Four of the starting 5 hit in double figures, and the fifth missed by only 2 points. Bob Raber paced the attack with 20 points. Right behind was Koran Zehnder. He tallied 19, 11 of them in the final period after he came off the bench, the result of accumulating 4 fouls midway in the second quarter. Center Charles Stingel added 17 and Tom Andreas had 11. Leading the Trojans was Clarence Cantrill with 22 points. Little Ron Lake, whose hustle was outstanding, turned in 19 markers. Garaway popped in 28 of 73 field attempts for 38.4 percent, while Tusky Valley meshed 22 of 75 for 29.3 percent. The Garaway Reserves (5-2) edged the TV Reserves (3-2) 33-32.

60 - Garaway Pirates Only Unbeated Team (12-19-59)

Garaway's undefeated Pirates stand all alone today at the top of the Tuscarawas County Class "A" League standings. The Pirates eliminated one of the two other clean-record loop teams last night when they sent the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans to a 77-88 setback in the feature of a 4-game league program. Strasburg bumped off the other - Tuscarawas - with a 56-45 victory to move into a second-place deadlock with the Broncos and Midvale. Garaway is now 3-0 in league play, Strasburg, Midvale and Tuscarawas 2-1 and Tusky Valley 1-1. Midvale's press had Stone Creek baffled right from the beginning as the Blue Devils rolled to an 80-55 decision to move up the ladder. Gnadenhutten showed it still has plenty of life when it defeated resurgent Port Washington 83-40. The league remains dormant through the holiday period with the next full slate scheduled Friday, January 8. Two rival battles headline that night's program, with Garaway traveling to Baltic and Tuscarawas Valley to Strasburg. Gnadenhutten is at Stone Creek andMidvale at Tuscarawas.

A veteran who scored 426 points last season is the leader in the County Class "A" Basketball scoring race. The veteran is leader John Rice of the Baltic Eagles. He has popped 143 points through the hoops in 8 outings, an average of 17.9. However, the highest average per game marks is held by the Tuscarawas Boncos' Gary Caviness. He is averaging 23 points a game, having tallied 115 in 5 contests played thus far. Not far off Rice's pace is Koran Zehnder of the Garaway Pirates, who has meshed 125 points in 6 games, 18 away from the leader. Garaway dominates the top group with three contenders in Zehnder, Jim Gerber and Charles Stingel. Baltic and Port Washington have two entries apiece. Rice is also setting the pace in the league point scoring race with 51. Gnadenhutten's John Hull with 44 points, is runner-up. Two county cage combines are still undefeated. They are Garaway and Tusky Valley. Garaway has the most potent offense scoring 427 points in 6 games, while Baltic, with two more contests, has tallied the same amount.

60 - Battle Of The Unbeatens (12-17-59)

PHOTO: Garaway Pirates Top Scorer - Koran Zehnder

PHOTO: Tuscarawas Valley Trojans Top Scorer - Clarence Canrill
*
*
Looking for an evening of basketball excitement, thrills, spills and chills? That type of action typifies the play in the Tuscarawas County Class "A" League where just about anything can and usually does happen. This year's race for league laurels has already been tagged as one of the hottest in many seasons. And the best is yet to come! Topping this weeks 4-game slate is the battle of unbeatens - Garaway Highs Pirates and Tuscarawas Valley's Trojan's - on the former's court. Tuscarawas, another top contender for league laurels with a 2-0 record and 4-1 overall as the result of a surprise 55-50 loss to Port Washington Tuesday night in a non-league encounter, will be at Strasburg. The Broncos do not face either Tuscarawas Valley or Garaway until February and by then the whole complexion of the league race might be changed. In other league action Port Washington's Purple Riders (4-3 and 1-2 in the loop), are at Gnadenhutten, winner of 2 of 6 games with a 1-2 circuit mark. Stone Creek, which has lost all six of its games, including two league encounters, will travel to Midvale to meet the Blue Devils, who are 2-4 and 1-1.
*
Garaway, under the tutorship of Jim Stull, has close to an all-veteran cast. It is one of the best balanced combines in the area. In rolling to 6 straight victories, 2 of which have been in league play, it has topped Baltic 58-43, Fresno 77-57, Strasburg 65-51, Midvale 70-50 Port Washington 78-47 and West Lafayette 79-44. Tuscarawas Valley, lacking height as the result of graduation of big rebounders Ben Price and Roy Buchanan, has turned to a fast-breaking style and it has paid dividends. Coach Bob Heller's combine has counted four victories, including one in the league. Leading the Pirates into the fray will be Senior Koran Zehnder (5-10) who will be at guard. He has counted 125 points an average of slightly more than 20 per game. Other starters in the well-balanced Buc attack are guard Bob Raber (6-1) and scorer of 60 points; forwards Jim Gerber (5-11) and Tom Andreas (6-1) with 73 and 65 points, respectively, and center Charles Stingel (6-1), who has tallied 89 points. High point man in the Tuscarawas Valley offense is Senior vet Clarence Cantrill (5-9). A forward, he has tallied 65 points. Teammate Jim Studer (5-10) at the opposite forward has scored 58, while guards Ron Lake (5-6) and Albert Cerett (5-10) have scored 50 and 30, respectively. Center Bruce Ickes has scored 18 points.

60 - Port Hands Tusky First Loss 55-50 (12-16-59)

TUSCARAWAS - Port Washington's Purple Riders (4-3) pulled the first major upset of the young season last night as they rose up with a second-half rally to knock the Tuscarawas Broncos from the unbeaten. "I'm proud of these kids," Coach Dick King said following th victory. "They have never quit this season, even when they lost, and I think they are really going to come now. They needed this win. They deserved it." Coach Kermit Smulbach, who had piloted theBroncos to four straight victories, said "I'm just glad it wasn't a league game. We hit poorly from the filed, but I've got to admit Port played a spirited game." After trailing the hosts for the first half, 19-12 at the first quarter and 26-22 at intermission, Port roared back with 10 straight points in the opening minutes of the third canto to go in front 32-26. Tusky retaliated and knotted the count at 36-all before Port went back to the front 41-38 at the end of the stanza. The Riders continued to hold the lead by narrow margins and were in front 50-47 with 1:45 left. Lanky Larry Hagan stole the ball at this point for Port and threw it down court to teammate John Landon who dropped it in for a 5-point lead. That was the game as Port then went into a control game, forcing Tusky to foul in order to stop the fast-moving clock. Jim Bender topped the Port attack with 17 points, while Landon hit for15 and Hagan had 12. Gary Caviness topped the hosts with 17 and Chip McCahill foiled with 11, while Phil Meese had 10. 60 - Garaway Defense Stops Foe 79-44 (12-14-59)

WEST LAFAYETTE - Garaway's Pirates (6-0) continued to reap basketball treasures Saturday night when they frolicked to a victory over the host West Lafayette Generals. It was victory No. 6 in succession for Jim Stull's charges. It also set the stage for a battle of the unbeatens Friday night at Garaway when Tuscarawas Valley (5-0) invades for a Tuscarawas County Class A contest. Koran Zehnder's 19 points led the way for the Pirates Saturday. Jim Gerber ended with 17, Chuck Stingel 13 and Tom Andreas 11. The Generals, stymied by the stiff Pirate man-to-man defense, were led by Bill Shrimplin's 10 points. The Garaway Reserves (4-2) also won their game earlier Saturday by cuffing the West Lafayette Reserves 42-31.

60 - Tuscarawas Broncos Romp 72-47 (12-12-59)

Tuscarawas' fine ball handling and all around court finesse was among reasons for its romp over Stone Creek (0-2) (0-6). The Panthers, who took it on the chin for the sixth straight time, were charged with 24 turnovers. Stone Creek looked as though it might be coming out of its current slump in the first period when it battled theBroncos (2-0) (4-0) to a 9-9 tie. But five straight bad passes resulted in five quick baskets and four free throws for the invaders and they splurged into an insurmountable lead. They were ahead 35-19 at halftime and 47-39 at the end of the third rest. Gary Caviness continued his high scoring antics for the Broncos with 25 points. Chuck McCahill followed with 14 and Chet Summers added 12. Larry Lorenz was high for the Panthers with 14. Gale Sauser contributed 10 points. Stone Creek took down 34 rebounds and made 20 of 56 from the field for 35 percent. The Tuscarawas Reserves continued their winning ways by roping the Stone Creek Reserves 54-10. In the Junior High games it was Stone Creek 45, Tuscarawas 32.

60 - Midvale In Fouls Plagued Win 66-61 (12-12-59)

Baltic (1-2) (3-5) Coach Jim Weinsz was none too pleased with the way officials were doing their whistle tooting at Midvale last night. Four of his starting five left the game after being tagged with five personal fouls. "I certainly don't want the basketball fans of this county to think we played dirty. On the contrary I think we were the ones who were being shoved all over the place". Fouling out were Chuck McPherson, Bob Ladrach, Gary Gerber and Dave Berger. Midvale (1-1) ((2-4) had a red hot night at the foul line and made 30 of its 46 attempts to take the victory. The Devils were outgoaled by the Eagles 25-18. The defending county league champions led most of the way, posting quarter leads of 20-9, 28-19 and 48-38. John Rice of Baltic regained his scoring form to nab laurels for the night with 28 points. Ron Breniser's 23 was high for the Devils. Neil Beans added 22 points for the winners, 14 coming via the free throw route. Gerber took runnerup honors for the Eagles with 18 points. Earlier, the Midvale Reserves (3-3) handed the Baltic Reserves (7-1) their first loss of the season 38-33. The Midvale Junior High team also handled Baltic by beating their Junior High team. However, the score was not reported.
