60 - Garaway Remains No.1 In Tuscarawas County Class "A" 77-68 (12-19-59)

Garaway (3-0) (7-0) matched Tusky Valley's speed and then took a big advantage of the backboards to send the Trojans (1-1) (4-1) to their first defeat of the season after 5 wins. The Pirates, who tangle with Hiland on the latter's floor tonight, was in high gear right from the opening whistle, piling up a lead that proved insurmontable for the Trojans. Coach Jim Stull's charges fired the nets for 9 of 20 field attempts and burst into a first period lead of 21-12. TV never quite recovered. The closest the Trojans came was at 5:00 of the first stanza when they knotted the count at 7-7. There on out they were never closer than 7 points. Stull was satisfied with the victory. "The boys certainly deserved to win. They played their hearts out." Trojan mentor Bob Heller also had words of praise for the victors. "They have a real fine team. We missed some shots that we should have had - but then we have another crack at them before the season is over." Balance was another reason for the Pirate victory. Four of the starting 5 hit in double figures, and the fifth missed by only 2 points. Bob Raber paced the attack with 20 points. Right behind was Koran Zehnder. He tallied 19, 11 of them in the final period after he came off the bench, the result of accumulating 4 fouls midway in the second quarter. Center Charles Stingel added 17 and Tom Andreas had 11. Leading the Trojans was Clarence Cantrill with 22 points. Little Ron Lake, whose hustle was outstanding, turned in 19 markers. Garaway popped in 28 of 73 field attempts for 38.4 percent, while Tusky Valley meshed 22 of 75 for 29.3 percent. The Garaway Reserves (5-2) edged the TV Reserves (3-2) 33-32.
