WALNUT CREEK - Garaway (7-1) was dropped from the elite unbeaten group here Saturday night, dropping an exciting overtime decision to the Hiland Hawks (7-0). Garaway entered the final period with a 12-point deficit. It was climaxed with 28 seconds remaining in the game when Koran Zehnder connected on a jump shot. The Hawks then played for the last shot, but it was blocked by the Pirates just as the final buzzer sounded. Hiland's Gene Gerber scored first in the overtime and Zehnder came back to tie the score 56-56. Gerber then hit on a fielder and added 2 foul shots for the Hawks' victory margin. Gerber paced the win with 11 goals and 8 free throws for 30 points. Linus Miller added 11. High for the Pirates was Zehnder with 21. Teammates Jim Gerber and Charles Stingel followed with 11 and 10, respectively. The two teams will collide again February 9 at Garaway. Hiland returns to action tomorrow night when it tangles with Killbuck in a Holmes County Class "A" League encounter, while the Pirates entertain Stone Creek Wednesday night. The Hiland Reserves also won over the Garaway Pirates (5-3) 40-34.
