Midvale's County Class A League champions will play Port Washington in the second game on opening night of the 36th annual County Tournament at Memorial Hall next Thursday. Drawings for the classic were held this morning in the office of County Supt. W.E. Laws, tourney manager. The seeded Blue Devils, unbeaten in eight league games, defeated Baltic last night for their 16th straight victory after losing their first two contests. Last year they advanced to the state semi-finals. Port Washington was winless in the league and posted only one victory in 18 season games. The tourney's opening game at 6:30 will pit Strasburg (11-7) against Garaway (11-10). Garaway is the new school district comprising Sugarcreek-Shanesville, Auburn and Wayne Townships. The Blue Devils and Purple Riders will collide at 7:45 and Stone Creek (12-8) will play Baltic (12-7) at 9. Tourney action will be resumed next Saturday, because Dover will be entertaining Steubenville on Friday night. The Saturday contests will send Tuscarawas Valley (11-5) against the Strasburg-Garaway winner at 7:30 and Gnadenhutten (14-5) against Tuscarawas (5-12) at 8:45. Gnadenhutten, which took second place in the league with a 6-2 mark, and Tuscarawas clash tonight in a non-loop contest at Gnadenhutten. The semi-finals will be staged on Thursday, February 20 with the two winners advancing to the sectional playoff, also scheduled for Memorial Hall. They also will collide on Saturday night, February 22, at 8PM for the tourney title. Seeded along with Midvale in today's drawings were Gnadenhutten, Stone Creek and Tuscarawas, the latter two tieing for third place in the league.

BOLIVAR - With Coach Bob Heller sending the starting team to the bench in preference to an all senior five for Tuscarawas Valley's last regular season game, Port Washington's Purple Riders (0-8) (1-17) almost pulled a mild upset here last night. But The Trojans (5-3) (11-5) weathered the storm to take the verdict from the scrappy Rider outfit. At the end of the first quarter the two teams were tied 15-15, but in the second quarter the invaders jumped to a 29-25 lead as they outscored the hosts 14-10. Third quarter action saw Tuscarawas Valley knot the count at 42-42 and in the final period the Trojans salvaged the victory as the usual starting quintet came to the rescue. Leading the Trojans was Joe King who tallied seven goals and three fouls for 17 points, while coming in for their share of the scoring honors was regular Wayne Ruof with 14 points and Gary Archinal, who had 12. Freshman Bill Phillips paced Port Washington as he hit the nets for 19 points on nine fielders and one foul. His brother Ron and John Landon added 12 each. The Port Washington Graders (5-6) won the initial game over the Tuscarawas Valley Graders 41-31. The Port Washington Reserves (1-17) mirrored the Port varsity by losing to the Tuscasrawas Valley Reserves 41-28.

Another county class A league season came to a close last night with Midvale (16-2) downing Baltic (12-7) 76-69 to go unscathed through league competition for the first time since 1949. The loss gave Baltic a 3-5 loop mark and put them in fifth place. Strasburg (11-7) ended its first season since 1952 without the league crown, but last night settled for a fourth place tie with Garaway (10-10) as they downed Tuscarawas (5-11) 73-40. Strasburg ends with a league mark of 4-4 and Tuscasrawas 1-7. Tuscarawas Valley's Trojans (11-5) ended its season with a 53-51 edge over Port Washington (1-17) which ended with a 0-8 mark in Bill Oppenheimer's first year at the Rider helm. Right Down The Line - With Norm Singleton (2-6-58)

THE CURTAIN WILL close on the regular basketball season for most Class A teams in the county this week. Thus a check of season statistics is in order. Looking at the Class A figures we find Stone Creek's Rod Reinhart may be on his way to snaring the scoring championship of the county. "Hot Rod," although sometimes guarded by two or three foes, has hit the nets for 189 goals and 63 free throws for 441 points and an average of 24.5. Two other Class A players are over the 20-points-per-game mark. They are Gary Caviness of Tuscarawas and Russ Hobart of Midvale. Caviness has 132 goals and 42 fouls for 306 points and a mark of 20.4, while Hobart, who is a returnee from the Midvale team which made the trip to the state championship semi-finals last year, has a 20.2 average. He has tallied 142 times from the field and 56 times from the foul line. Representing Baltic in the top 10 is John Rice, who has scored 352 points for 18.8 per tilt. Ben Price, Tuscarawas Valley's star center, follows Rice with 239 points on 107 goals and 35 free throws for 17.7 per game. Tuscarawas, which along with Midvale are the only teams to have two representatives in the first 10. Tom Vesco (Tuscarawas) has a 16.9 average, while Ron Bradley of Gnadenhutten concludes the scoring race with 16.5.

MALVERN - Behind 24-7 after only one quarter, the Port Washington Purple Riders (1-16) were never in contention here last night and finished on the short end of a 74-47 count for their 16th loss in 17 games. The host Green Hornets were on top 34-22 at halftime and had a comfortable 54-31 advantage at the close of the third period. Ron Whittington once again sparked the Malvern attack with 34 points, while Bill and Ron Phillips caged 20 and 15 respectively for Port Washington. Earlier in the Reserve game, it was Malvern 34 - Port Washington (1-16) 12.

PORT WASHINGTON - Midvale's starting array played only the first half at Port Washington (0-6) (1-15) as the Blue Devils (7-0) (14-2) securely tucked away the league championship with an easy victory, their 12th straight. Port Washington is in sole possession of last place. Russ Hobart and Tom Krocker tallied 20 and 12 points respectively, to pace the Midvale varsity to 23-11 and 48-20 leads at the close of the first two periods. The reserves took over after the midway rest and limited the Riders to eight points the third quarter, while swishing 13 for a 61-28 lead at the far turn. In the fourth stanza, the Blue Devils dunked 23 points to 14 for the losers. Don Hanlon scored 13 and Ron Kaderly 10 during the second half for Midale as 12 Blue Devils joined in the scoring parade. Ron and Bill Phillips again topped Port Washington with 11 and 10 respectively. Midvale Graders began the night's sweep by beating the Port Washington Graders (4-6) 45-29. The Midvale Reserves then beat the Port Washington Reserves (1-15) 67-36.

Tuscarawas Class A Basketball League Standings (2-1-58)

Midvale's rampaging Blue Devils (14-2) wrapped up their first county league title in eight years last night when they trampled on the Port Washington Purple Riders (1-15) 84-42 for their seventh straight loop triumph. They still have one league game against Baltic (11-6) remaining on their schedule. The Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (10-5) ended their league season with a 64-53 triumph over Baltic for their fifth win in eight loop tests, good enough for a third place tie with Stone Creek (10-7) which has already completed its league season. In the other league game Garaway (9-9) rode the Tuscarawas Broncos (7-7) to an 85-71 triumph. Garaway now has a 4-4 mark which moves them ahead of Baltic into fourth place, while Tusky has won but one league game in seven outings and are bound to a seventh place finish, despite having one more contest to play.

"Many Moons" have set since the last time a Midvale High basketball team has pocketed a County Class A League Championship. But with tomorrow night's battle against Port Washington the lads from "Stumphill" should accomplish that goal. Coach Pete Hilliard's Blue Devils, who went all the way to the state semi-final tournament in Columbus last year, need only to down the Purple Riders for their seventh league win, thus eliminating the possibility of Gnadenhutten tieing for the crown. It has been eight years since Midvale has held sole possession of the county championship. In the 1949-1950 season, when Bob French was at the helm, and the Blue Devils finished the league campaign with a 9-1 mark. It was also the third consecutive league crown captured by Midvale dating back to the 1947-1948 season. In the 1950-1951 campaign Midvale, Tuscarawas and Strasburg tied for the toga with 8-2 records. The loop then was called the Class B League instead of the modern "A" version. In the 1951-1952 season the Blue Devils went into the final league game against Tuscarawas with a 9-0 loop mark and was considered a good bet to win, but the Broncos came through by a 62-56 margin and Midvale had to be content with sharing league honors with Dundee, which now is part of the Garaway consolidation. Strasburg ended that campaign in seventh place with a 4-6 record, but then the Tigers came up with their powerful squads and became the perennial team to beat. But even during Strasburg's league reign Midvale managed to cop two county tournament titles and was runnerup once in addition to last Spring's State tourney title bid.

Bengals Post 96-29 Win At Port (1-29-58)

PHOTO: Port Washington Purple Riders - Jim Hannahs

STRASBURG - "Broke Out All Over" is the correct explanation of the scoring outburst of the victory-starved Strasburg Tigers (10-7) here last night when they walked over hapless Port Washington (1-14). In pinning the sixth straight loop setback on the Purple Riders the Tigers used a total of 13 players, with four hitting in the double figure column and the starting five seeing action for only about half of the contest. The Bengals racked up a total of 44 field goals while adding only eight free throws and at the same time held the invaders to 14 fielders and one charity toss. In the first quarter Strasburg meshed the nets for 22 points, while Port Washington stayed in contention with 12 points. But, in the second quarter the Tigers completely ran away with the contest when they scored 28 points to the invaders five for a halftime lead of 50-17. They continued the romp in the third quarter, outscoring the Purple Riders 24 to six for a 74-23 lead despite the fact that substitutes took over. In the final quarter Strasburg hit for 22 more points and the losers only six. Strasburg has but one game remaining on their schedule. Leading the Tiger onslaught was Chuck Burris with 20 points, while Nick Haswell had 15, Joe Krantz 11 and Bob Haswell 10. Bill and Ron Phillips had six each for Port Washington. In the Reserve game, Strasburg won over Port Washington (1-14) 44-25. In the initial Graders, Port Washington (4-5) edged Strasburg 21-15.

Tuscarawas Class A Basketball League Standings (1-29-58)

After losing four straight contests the Strasburg Tigers (10-7) finally broke loose when they scorched the nets for a 96-29 victory over Port Washigton (1-14) in one of three county Class A battles played last night. The victory which gives Strasburg a 3-4 loop mark, moved them into a tie for sixth place with Garaway(8-8), which dropped a 71-66 decision to league leading Midvale (13-2), which now has a 6-0 mark in the league. The win by Midvale eliminated any chance that Gnadenhutten, which is now finished in league play, might have of winning the crown. However, the indians can still tie for the toga if the high flying Blue Devils lose their two remaining loop contests. In the other game Stone Creek (10-7) finished out its league schedule with a 5-3 record on a 70-57 win over Baltic (11-5), currently in fifth place with an even 3-3 mark. Tuscarawas Valley (9-5) and Tuscarawas (7-6) were idle.

PORT WASHINGTON - Port Washington (1-13) had four players in double figures, but the Purple Riders waited too long before making their bid for their first league victory and as a result, slipped into the cellar. The Riders were ahead 14-13 after one quarter and led for part of the second stanza before Tuscarawas (6-6) took over and retained the lead the remainder of the way, copping a 38-27 half-time edge and a 64-38 margin at the last break. In the closing period, the Purple Riders outscored the Broncos 25-16, but the deficit was too great and they dropped their 13th decision. Gary Caviness of Tuscarawas topped the scoring with 24 points with teammates Tom Vesco and Dick Robinson close behind with 21 each. Ron and Bill Phillips and John Landon each hit 16 and Tom Gardner had 10 for Port Washington. The Tuscarawas Reserves tied up the Port Washington Reserves (1-13) 53-22. In the initial Graders game, Port Washington (3-5) buried Tuscarawas 55-22.

Tuscarawas Class A Basketball League Standings (1-25-58)

Headlining three county league battles last night was the Midvale (12-2) - Strasburg (9-7) game which saw the Blue Devils take a hard earned 52-44 triumph. The victory kept Midvale's loop slate clean with five victories, while the Tigers, in the throes of their worst season in years, now have a 2-4 mark and are in sixth place. Gnadenhutten's Indians (13-5), who are in second, will now have to sit back and wait to see how Midvale does in its three remaining league games as they played their last loop test of the season last night when they edged past the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (8-5) 49-46 for their sixth win in eight games in league competition. The Trojans are now 3-3 in the A league. In the other game Tuscarawas (6-6) downed Port Washington (1-13) 80-63 for its first loop triumph of the season, while the Purple Riders suffered their fifth straight loss putting them in last place. Baltic (11-4) which is idle until tonight when it plays a non-loop contest moved into third place with a 3-2 mark, while Stone Creek (9-7) took fourth, leaving Garaway (7-8) and Tuscarawas Valley tied for fifth spot.

STONE CREEK - Stone Creek (8-7) was awarded only three foul shots and made two of them, but the Panthers didn't need any help from the white stripe as they thumped the invading Port Washington Purple Riders (1-12) last night. Coach Ed McGlumphy's Panthers took 90 flings at the basket and connected 45 times for a sizzling 50 per cent in notching the easy victory, which was the second of the year over the Riders. The triumphant hosts led 14-8, 38-20 and 68-28 at the quarters, their 30-point sprees in each of the last two periods turning the game into a rout. The Riders managed only eight points the third stanza. Rod Reinhart led the attack with 28 points, all on action shots, while Harold Baker tallied 23. Ron Phillips and Bill Phillips paced Port Washington with 15 and 11, respectively. It was Stone Creek again in the Reserve game as they beat Port Washington (1-12) 36-30. Stone Creek Graders made it a another sweep for the night as they started the thumping over the Port Washington Graders (2-5) 34-16.

Midvale's Blue Devils (10-2), defending regional champions, increased their lead in the Tuscarawas County A loop last night when they downed the second-place Gnadenhutten Indians (11-5) 82-73 for their fourth decision as against no losses in league play. The Tribe is now 5-2. LAFFERTY - Port Washington (1-11) set the pace for three quarters last night, but faltered in the stretch and dropped a decision to Lafferty. The Purple Riders raced to a 12-5 first period advantage and held a 29-20 margin at half time. However, Lafferty trimmed the deficit to 37-33 going into the deciding final stanza and grabbed the verdict by outscoring the Tuscarawas Countians 15 to 7 in the last period. Bill Phillips, with 13 points, was the only Purple Rider able to dent the double figure column. Jim McGrey, who hit eight points in the fourth quarter, topped Lafferty with 24. PORT WASHINGTON - Baltic (8-4) led all the way in its triumph over Port Washington (1-10), but was pushed to the limit by the Bill Oppenheimer-coached Rider quintet. The Eagles took a 1-point, 13-12 edge in the first quarter and held a 41-29 advantage at half time, outscoring the hosts 28-19. Coach Jack Belville of Baltic, using only seven men, saw his cagers assume a 61-43 margin at the end of the third quarter and they added 20 more markers in the final stanza when the upstart Purple Riders meshed the nets for 27, giving the Eagles a scare. John Rice was the big man in the Eagle attack when he scorched the nets for 13 field goals and two foul shots for 28 points. Contributing 15 on seven shots from the field and one from the charity line was Sam Jacobs. Gary Berger and Ron Huprich scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Don Ferrell led the Purple Riders with 15, while Ron Phillips and Don Jones had 14 points. The Baltic Reserves battered the Port Washington Reserves (1-10) 52-16. In the Grade game, Baltic edged Port Washington (2-4) 39-32.

Class A Tourney Policy Is Revised (1-9-58)

The Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament once again will be held in Memorial Hall here February 13, 15, 20 and 22. The consolation games played in previous years have been dropped this year because there will be only nine teams in the event and will represent the county in the sectional tournament here February 25. Admission for the county meet will be $1 for adults and 60 cents for students. Tournament passes will cost $4. In the past the passes have been issued to the participants and to a limited number of tournament program advertisers. Many individuals have requested the opportunity to buy passes so a more liberal policy has been adopted. People wishing to purchase passes should make their requests to merchants. They are advised to do this during January.

PORT WASHINGTON - The basketball victory drought at Port Washington (1-9) was terminated last night as the Purple Riders eked out a thrilling 53-52 triumph over Conesville of Coshocton County for their first win after nine defeats. It was a nip-and-tuck affair all the way with the lead changing hands on numerous occasions and Port Wasington coming from a five-point deficit in the closing 90 seconds to cop the decision. After leading 14-9 and 24-22 at the first two breaks, the Riders fell behind 37-35 at the far turn. Conesville then grabbed a five-point lead before a last-ditch rally by Port Washington paid off. With the invaders still leading by one point, Ron Phillips swished his sixth field goal with 56 seconds remaining and, after regaining possession, the Riders froze the ball to insure the victory. Bill Phillips led the Riders with 17 points as Ron Phillips followed with 13 and Don Jones added 12. Conesville was topped by Albertson's 20. The Conesville Reserves had beaten the Port Washington Reserves (1-9) earlier 52-35. Last week the Port Washington Graders (2-3) took on the Newcomerstown Graders in a losing cause 55-6.

MIDVALE - Despite playing without two regulars and with the starting array in action less than three quarters, the Midvale Blue Devils (6-2) trampled the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-8) in a non-league skirmish at Midvale last night. The output tied the Midvale school scoring record established 20 years ago when a Blue Devil quintet featuring Frankie Baumholtz blasted Stone Creek 105-9. It marked the fourth straight win for Coach Pete Hilliard's defending regional champions. Port Washington hit its highest single game point total of the season. Sophomore Ron Breniser started his first game for the Blue Devils and scored 21 points in the first half to finish with 26 and runner-up laurels behind Russ Hobart, the lone senior on the Midvale squad, who rattled the rims for 35 points. Both left the game along with the remainder of the starting array with three minutes remaining in the third period. Tom Krocker hit 12 points and Don Hanlon added 11 to the winning effort, while Bill Phillips led Port Washington with 17, Don Ferrell scored 13 and LeRoy Davies netted 11. Regulars Gary Carrothers of Midvale was not present because of illness, while Dave Belknap missed the contest because of disciplinary action. In the Reserve game, Midvale knocked off Port Washington (1-7) 51-24. No Graders game.

NOTE: The Consolation Title has been dropped in the 1957-1958 season (this year) due to only having nine teams in the league (last year there were 11). Bolivar and Mineral City became Tuscarawas Valley after the 1956-1957 season. Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Dundee becomes Garaway and will be listed as such during the next league standings. It is also expected that Baltic will join Garaway in the near future, but not this season.

TUSCARAWAS County was well represented on college and university football teams throughout Ohio last season. But as we thumbed through the various basketball college pamphlets the other day we found the county also has many representatives on the collegiate courts. Joe Demares, a stalwart for the Dover Tornadoes last year until he reinjured his knee, appears to be back in top condition this season and is playing for Muskingum at New Concord. Joe is listed as a forward at 6-0 and the Muskie Information pamphlet states that "He has the heart and desire, but needs polish." Also on the Muskie roster is Ed Bates, who played quite a bit of basketball for Port Washington last season. Ed is holder of the Memorial Hall and Tuscarawas County tournament scoring record, meshing 50 points in last spring's meet.. He was a member of the Daily Reporter's All-County team. He too, is a freshman and is 6-2. Two former county cagers are playing with Heidelberg's Student Princes at Tiffin. They are Gene Wenger of New Philadelphia and Ron Deibel of Stone Creek. Wenger is listed as a 6-2 guard who is regarded as "one of Coach Marvin Frey's top sophomore prospects. Possessive of much basketball know-how, he was the leading frosh scorer last year." Deibel, another Daily Reporter All-County choice last season, is one of five freshman guards on the varsity squad. The Student Prince drumbeater says: Ron is a highly regarded freshman prospect, who played outstanding ball at Stone Creek High School. Another all-county choice last Spring was 6-2 Ken (Bobo) Hauter who now is a forward for the highly-regarded Kent State University Freshman team. Ken played his high school basketball at Tuscarawas Valley. Also on the Kent squad is Charley Boykin who played a lot of basketball for Kent Roosevelt last season. Terry Deems, of Tuscarawas, a member of the Daily Reporter elite group in the 1955 season, and Eldon Miller of Gnadenhutten, who was on last year's team, are on the Wittenburg College team. Deems is a 6-4 center, while Miller is playing guard.

Tuscarawas Class A Basketball League (12-14-57)

Stone Creek's Panthers emerged as the leaders in the county scholastic basketball league and the Strasburg Tigers lost their first decision in loop play in almost six years as four loop engagements were played last night. The Panthers notched their third league victory without a setback as they turned back the invading Tuscarawas Broncos 66-55, while the mighty Tigers were surprised 69-56 by the rampaging Gnadenhutten Redskins. In other league tilts, Midvale's Blue Devils won their initial test 56-49 over the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates downed the Port Washington Purple Riders 64-43. Prior to their reversal in the Gnadenhutten wigwam, Strasburg basketball combines had notched 51 consecutive county league victories and rolled to five straight undefeated loop championships. The last time a Tiger quintet had tasted defeat in circuit competition was on January 25, 1952, by a 53-48 score-at Gnadenhutten! Since then, Strasburg had copped its five unsullied titles under the direction of three different coaches. Don Martin, now at North Canton, tutored two championship teams; Ken Newlon, now Chanton Lincoln mentor, directed the Tigers to two more and Chuck Caniford was at the helm last year.

Tomorrow night in the County High School Class A League four games are scheduled for the first full card of the season. Quintets in the loop will meet in the annual county tournament at Dover's Memorial Hall in February. The league always comes up with individual stars and this season is no exception. Rod Reinhart, sensational 5-10 guard for the Stone Creek Panthers, appears to be on his way to the county scoring title. In six games to date he has meshed 159 points, an average of 26.5 per game. When the Panthers entertain Tuscarawas tomorrow night he and Harold Baker, who has scored 68 points will be pacing the Panthers, who have won 4 of 6 games. Heading Tuscarawas will be Gary Caviness, who has netted 70 points in four contests for a 17.5 average. Facing Gnadenhutten, Strasburg's unbeaten Tigers will be led by Nick Haswell. He has tallied 91 points in five tilts for an 18.2 average. Teammate Chuck Burris is close behind him with 85 and an average of 17 points per game. Three Gnadenhutten players are in a close race. Tom Roth is the leader with 84 points in six battles for a 14 point average. Ron Bradley has tallied 81 and Larry Gooding 72 for averages of 13.5 and 12, respectively. Ben Price, although appearing briefly in two contests and going all the way in the other, is the leading scorer for the Tuscasrawas Valley Trojans who meet Midvale tomorrow night. Price has scored 27 points for a 3 game, 9 point average. Russ Hobart and Tom Krocker pace Midvale. Hobart has an average of 18 points per contest, scoring 72 in four battles. Krocker is averaging 14.1 with 57 markers to his credit. Baltic, idle tomorrow, is being led by John Rice's 19.4 average per contest. John has the top point total in the county with 173, but has played nine games. Teammate Ron Huprich has scored 149 points for an average of 16.5.
