63 - Hiland Slaps Baltic 69-45 (11-30-62)

BALTIC - Baltic's Eagles (1-2) tried valiantly during the early going, but they didn't have the "wings" displayed by the powerful Hiland Hawks (1-0) as the visitors opened their 1962-1963 season with a victory.  The Eagles kept within striking distance of the invaders until near the end of the 3rd period.  But the Hawks poured on the steam for an impressive win.  Hiland, Ohio's class "A" schoolboy tournament runner-up last year, commanded quarter leads of 14-6, 30-20 and 49-34 as Art Mullet and Joel Menuez, 2 of 3 returning lettermen from last year's squad, showed the way.  Mullet potted 12 baskets for 24 points.  Menuez finished with 17  Dan Erb contributed 10 to the attack.  Dick Gerber was the only Eagle able to hit consistently.  He potted 12 points in the first half and 15 in the second to grab scoring laurels.  Dale Stein caged 11, but the remainder of the club wasn't able to click.  The well-played contest saw only 24 foul shots.  Hiland meshed 9 of 14, Baltic 5 of 10.  In the Reserve game, Hiland (1-0) stomped Baltic (0-3) 56-27.

63 - Strasburg Stops Midvale 68-58 (11-27-62)

PHOTO:  Bob Byers of Midvale grabs loose ball as Don Wallick of Strasburg reaches in vain.  Other identified cagers are Dean DeMattio (left) of Midvale and Adrian  Edie (20) of Strasburg.

STRASBURG - Hot shooting especially from Senior  Adrian Edie and a tight defense enabled Strasburg High's Tigers (1-0) to claw Midvale (2-1) here last night.  It was the opening game of the 1962-1963 basketball season for Coach Warren Binder's crew.  The Tigers shot 46 percent from the floor, hitting on 26 of 56 tries.  The Blue Devils of Coach Pete Hilliard hit 32.9 percent on 20 of 61.  Strasburg connected on 16 of 24 from the foul line.  Midvale hit on 18 of 31 free tosses.  The two teams played on even terms in the second half, but Strasburg had a 10-point lead at intermission.   The Tigers led 22-16 at the first stop, 36-26 at the half and 48-38 after 3 periods.  They led by 16 points midway in the 3rd stanza.  Edie, standing just 5-6, popped in 30 points to take scoring honors.  Don Wallick dropped 15 markers through the hoop and John Peters 11 for Strasburg's cause.  Dean DeMattio led Midvale with 21 points, 14 coming in the first half.  Bob Byers had 15 for the Devils and Don Basquin 10.  "The boys played a good game for opening night," Binder said.  "They made a few mistakes which can be expected for the first contest.  But their shooting was good and defense excellent.  We'll be a good ball club when we get those mistakes ironed out."  Edie stole the ball from a Midvale player and went in for a layup after DeMattio had controlled the tip.  Edie then hit from the outside for a quick 4-0 lead.  DeMattio hit from the key to get his team on the board.  Edie and Sophomore Rock Van Fossen then combined to keep the hosts out in front in the first period.  Vic Gessner provided the board work in the second period, with Edie hitting on 3 field attempts as the Tigers built up a 36-24 lead before DeMattio hit just before intermission.  Don Wallick gave Edie help from the floor in the third period, but both Wallick and Peters picked  up their fourth personal foul.  Midvale began its move early in the final period, cutting  the deficit to 7 points.  The 2 clubs battled back and forth before Gessner came up with 2 fouls and a bucket.  Wallick dropped in 4 free tosses and Edie hit on 4 field goals and 2 charity attempts to give the winners a 68-52 margin with only one minute left to play.  The reserve game was a thriller, with Terry Leggett dropping in 2 free tosses with 5 seconds left to give Midvale (3-0) a 48-47 nod over the Strasburg Reserves (0-1).

63 - Meet The 1962-1963 Strasburg Tigers (11-27-62)

PHOTO:  This is our goal, Coach Warren Binder tells Don Wallick (sitting left) and Vic Gessner and Joe Aul (standing left), John Peters and Adrian Edie.

DOVER - "This could be the year Strasburg High climbs back to the top as one of Tuscarawas County's leading teams."  That statement comes from head basketball Coach Warren Binder who feels a program introduced 2 years ago will start paying dividends during the 1962-1963 season.  Five lettermen return this season, led by Senior 2-year veteran Adrian Edie, an all-county selection in 1961-1962.  Other returnees are 2-year letterman Joe Aul, a Senior, and John Peters, a Junior.  Prospective candidates for varsity action are Frank Welling, a 5-11 Senior with some experience, and Fred Scherer, a 6-0 Junior, considered a very good shot.  Up from the Freshman squad are Rock Van Fossen (5-11), Ron Lab (5-10), Rich Hall (6-3),Bob Mills (5-11) and Tom Dreher (5-6),  Van Fossen is considered a good bet to stick with  the varsity this year.  Edie, despite standing only 5-6, is one of the finest guards in the area.  He had 199 points last year to top all Tiger returnees.  Wallick, 6-3, is a good shot and a strong board man and is an early favorite for County laurels this season.  He plays forward or center.  Last year, he had 156 points.  Aul, 6-2 and 235 pounds, is a strong defensive performer and a top-notch rebounder.  Gessner, 5-10, is a good ball handler, can shoot well and also is a fine rebounder.  This could be his finest year.  He potted 152 points last season.  Peters (6-0) could be one  of the County's top scorers this year.  He is considered the best shot on  the team.  He had 154 points in 1961-1962.  Strasburg was 1-19 two years ago, but snapped back to an 11-7 record last season.  The Tigers' mark included victories over powerful Hiland and  Sandy Valley.

63 - Meet The 1962-1963 Midvale Blue Devils (11-24-62)

PHOTO:  Keep this distance from the man with the ball, Coach Pete Hilliard tells Dean DeMattio (left) and Bob Byers.

DOVER - Lack of height and only 2 returning lettermen are the problems Coach Pete Hilliard of Midvale will have to overcome this season.  The Blue Devil basketballers were heavily hit through graduation, losing outstanding players Neal Beans and Rick Belknap plus Walt Weaver, Mike Page and Jim Tidrick.  The  only veterans back in the fold this year are Bob Byers, 5-10 Senior and Dean DeMattio, 6-2 Junior.  Others seeking varsity berths are the following:

Senior Don Bassquin 5-10
Senior Tom Mackey 5-8
Junior Tom McPherson 5-9
Junior Don Ickes 5-10
Junior Butch Fox 5-5
Junior Jay Carpenter 5-10
Sophomore Terry Leggett 5-8
Sophomore Tom Daniels 5-10
Sophomore Ted Tolloti 5-7
Sophomore Dan Kohler 6-0

Hilliard, now in his 9th year at the helm, guided his cagers to an 18-5 record last year, including a co-championship of the Tuscarawas County League and all the honors in the county tournament.  The 1961-1962 Devils bowed out 54-48 to Dennison in the second game of the Sectional.  Byers and DeMattio apparently have starting berths sewed up,  but Hilliard is undecided about the other 3 spots.  Top candidates at this time are Basquin, Mackey, McPherson, Ickes and Fox.  Byers potted 175 points last year and DeMattio 151.  Hilliard has posted an 82-26 won-loss record during the past 5 years.

DOVER - A young, inexperienced team with 4 big men and 2 small guards, all under a new coach, describes Garaway's basketball Pirates this season.  The Bucs usually are considered the team to beat in the Tuscarawas County Class "A" League, but are rebuilding this year with only one Senior on the squad.  Under the first-year reign of Coach Joe Richards, Garaway handled Baltic 68-40 in the season's opener last Saturday.  The Pirates (1-0) go after win No. 2 tonight at Stone Creek (1-0).  With just 2 lettermen returning from last year's squad which ended in a tie with Midvale for the county championship and finished second to the Devils in the tournament, the Pirates are counting heavily on Geof Stevanus.  The 5-9 guard is the only Senior on the team and is expected to be the Pirates' playmaker.  He scored 222 points last year.  The other veteran is Junior Don Deetz, also a 5-9 guard.  Deetz potted 205 markers last year as Garaway ended with a 17-7 slate after bowing 53-32 to State runner-up Hiland in the Sectional Tournament.  "Our inside boys are big, but young," Richards said.  "Once we learn our new system and get a few games under the belt we'll be okay."  Richards replaces Glenn Bower who now is head coach at Dennison St. Mary's.  Other starters, in addition to Stevanus and Deetz, are expected to be Juniors Frank Miller, 6-4 center, and Fred Smith, 6-2 forward, plus Sophomore Randy Miller, 6-1 forward.  John Spear, a 6-0 Junior, is the top replacement at this time, but could force one of the other boys out of the starting array.  Juniors Bill Richardson and Ronnie Raber, both 5-9, and  Tim Stevanus, 5-10, are being groomed as guards and could develop into top-notch backcourt men, Ed Mueller and Fred Flinzer, both 6-0 Junior forwards, and Jim Young a 5-9 Freshman guard, also are expected to see considerable duty.  Mueller has been erratic in his shooting so far, but is a fine defensive player as is Flinzer.  Young is a good ball handler and an excellent shot.  Others who figure in Garaway's Varsity plans this year are Dan and Dave Andreas, Larry Pope, Rodney Showers, Jeff Trachsel, Ted Mast, Bill Rowe, and Gary Burkey.  Gone from last year's team are Roy Yoder, Dan Bleininger and Wayne Burkey.  Yoder potted 359 points last season, Bleininger 260 and Burkey 163.
