63 - Midvale Wins Opener 54-40 Over West Lafayette (11-24-62)




MIDVALE - Waltzing to a 30-17 halftime advantage, the Big Blue of Midvale (1-0) opened the 1962-1963 basketball season on a triumphant note here Friday with a win over West Lafayette.  The Devils of Coach Pete Hilliard, in his 9th year as head cage boss, will move to Killbuck tonight.  The game will be played at the Glenmont Gymnasium.  Featuring a well-balanced attack, the Devils were paced by returning letterman Dean DeMattio with 15 points.  Tom McPherson, a reserve performer last year, had 14.  The only other returning letterman, Bob Byers had 9.  Cletus Hoffman paced West Lafayette with 18 points.  The Midvale Reserves (1-0) ran over the West Lafayette Reserves 50-28.
