62 - Gnaden Gets By Garaway 6-4 (4-30-62)

SUGARCREEK - Gnadenhutten's Indians (8-0) racked up their 8th straight victory on  the diamond Tuesday afternoon as they downed Garaway (3-4) to advance in the Sectional Class "A" Baseball Tournament.  Gnadenhutten will meet Hiland Holmes County Champion, Thursday at 1:30.  Not since 1958 has a Gnadenhutten combine advanced this far.  That year they went to the semi-finals of State play, only to be ousted by Goshen Local of Hamilton County.

In last night's affair, Jim McCreary (2-0) took the decision  for Gnadenhutten, while Dan Bleininger (2-3) was the loser.  McCreary gave up but 2 hits, but appeared wild and walked 7 and struck out the same number, while Bleininger was touched for 8 hits and he walked 6 and whiffed 5.  Lanky Brad Kaiser, the Indians rightfielder came up with 2 for 2, both singles, to spark the Tribe, while Sophomore Don Garrett, the leftfielder clubbed 2 for 3.  Bruce Kohl also added a 2-run single in the fifth, while Glenn Miller, McCreary and Bob Ervin added singles.  The Indians came up with a 1-0 lead after the first frame and added a run in the second, but 3 runs, of which only one was earned, gave Garaway the lead 3-2 after 2 full frames.  In the top of the fourth, Gnadenhutten tied the game at 3-3 and in the fifth, scored 3 more to take a 6-3 margin, which was cut to the final ending when  Garaway came back to score a lone tally in the bottom of the fifth.  The Pirates committed 4 errors and had but 2 earned runs, while Gnaden was guilty of 5 miscues.
