63 - Meet The Teachers

PORT WASHINGTON - The following teachers from Port Washington, Ohio were featured in The Daily Reporter during the months of October and November 1962.

EARL LEONHARD -   Earl Leonhard of RD 2, Uhrichsville, has a busy schedule of classes in Port Washington High School.  He teaches physics, chemistry, algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, math and science.  In addition to his teaching duties he also sponsors the Camera Club.  A graduate of Gnadenhutten High and Moravian College he has had additional work at Muskingum College.  In his 8th year as a teacher, he was on  the staff at Midvale before going to Port Washington.  Leonard's wife, the former Majorie Barnes, also was a teacher, but now is kept busy at home with her duties as a housewife and mother of their daughter, Donna Lynn.  A member of local, state and national  teachers association, Leonhard enjoys photography, golf and reading.

CHARLES KNIGHT JR. - Designing and making furniture are hobbies with Charles Knight Jr., so his duties as industrial arts instructor in  Port Washington High are "right up his alley."  A graduate of East Fairmont High and Fairmont, West Virginia State Teachers College.  Knight also teaches English and is advisor for the  Senior Class.  A member of Epailon Pi Tau Fraternity, he is superintendent and a member of the Board of the Newcomerstown Trinity Methodist Church.  Knight, his wife, Virginia and daughter, Nedra, live at 650 Heller Drive, Newcomerstown.

MRS. JEANNE PALMER - Mrs. Palmer of 1224 Park Lane,  New Philadelphia, is unique inasmuch as she is one of the very few high school teachers who has a law degree.  A graduate of New Philadelphia High, she attended Ohio University and received a bachelor of arts degree from M t. Union College before studying law at Akron University's Law School.  Jeanne realizes the value of a good education and for that reason prefers to teach so she can instill the desire for knowledge in young people.  Although she lives in New Philadelphia, she drives to Port Washington to teach commercial subjects and acts as guidance counselor and advisor to the yearbook staff.  A member of several teachers groups she also belongs to the College Club.  A daughter, Corinne, is following in her mother's footsteps by attending Akron University.

NEIL COMPTON - With 4 sons and a daughter (this includes a set of twins) Neil Compton understands children and perhaps that is why he gets along so well with students in Port Washington Elementary School.  Compton is principal there, teaches 7th ad 8th grade classes, serves as a member of the coaching staff and heads the Audio Aids Club.  In this way he keeps in close contact with most of the students.  A graduate of Grafton, West Virginia and received his bachelor of arts degree in education from Fairmont State College.  Listed among his hobbies are golf, fishing, bowling, hunting and traveling.  Compton, his wife Ellen and their children, make their home in Port Washington.

GEORGE THOMAS - Bring up the subject of sports and you will find George Thomas an interested participant in the conversation.  George is not only assistant basketball and track coach at Port Washington High, but bowling and tennis are his favorite hobbies.  His other duties at school include teaching science, history and geography to 7th and 8th Grade students.  A graduate of Central Catholic High in Wheeling and Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, Thomas has been teaching for the past 5 years.  He and his wife, Janis, also a teacher, live in  Port Washington.
