TUSCARAWAS - Port Washington (2-1) fought off a last half rally by arch rival Tuscarawas (0-2) last night to capture a victory in a battle that was nip-and-tuck all the way.  The Purple Riders of Port Washington opened the game with a 23 point scoring barrage to go 5 up on the Tuscarawas Broncos at the end of the first stanza.  Each team dropped in 10 counters in  the second period to make the score 33-28 at halftime.  The Broncos began to chop away at the Port Washington lead in the third frame, cutting the gap to 3 points at the end of the quarter.  In the wild final period, Tuscarawas rallied to take a 2-point lead with 5 minutes remaining, but Port Washington snapped back into the groove to pull out the victory.  Tom Loader topped the winners with 17 points.  Larry Laisure had 15, and Ken Gay 10 counters.  Dave Peoples had 15,  Fred Burmich 14 and Phil Meese 11 were high for Tuscarawas.  The Port Washington (2-0)-Tuscarawas (1-1) Reserve game was won by Port 40-37.

62 - Three Rivers Win 69-48 Due To Baltic Slow Start (11-26-61)

KEENE - The Baltic Eagles (3-0) got off to a slow start Saturday, and consequently dropped their third straight game of the young season, losing to host Three Rivers.  Baltic was able to collect only 16 points in the first half, while Three Rivers was scorching the nets for 45 points and a 29 point halftime advantage.  After intermission, the Eagles got rolling and outscored the eventual winners in both the third and fourth quarters, but Three Rivers just had too much of a lead.  "I don't think they'll lose too many games," commented Baltic Coach Erroll Jacobs about Three Rivers.  "They've got a real good ball club."  The taller Three Rivers cagers controlled both backboards forcing Baltic to foul frequently.  Three Rivers made 17 of 25 at the bonus stripe, while Baltic made 6 of the 8 it attempted.  Willis Mullet topped Baltic with 24 points.  Dick Gerber pitched in with 14.  Haas had 16 for Three Rivers and he was backed up by Bible with 11 and Porterfield with 10.  No mention of a Reserve game.

62 - Hiland Victimized By Garaway 42-31 (11-26-61)

BERLIN - Leading all the way, the Garaway Pirates (3-0) swept to their third straight victory of the season Saturday night, whipping host Hiland Hawks.  The Pirates broke out on top in the first period, assuming an 8-5 lead, and then led the rest of the way.  They held a 7-point advantage at halftime and increased it to 30-22 at the end of 3 periods.  Hiland threatened midway in the fnial stanza and cut the gap to just 4 points, but Garaway quickly rallied to put the game out of reach.  The game was decided at the foul line where Garaway popped in 21 of 26 foul shots, a solid 80 percent.  Hiland made only 6 bonus tosses for the night.  Neither team hit with much accuracy from the field.  Garaway cashed in on 10 of 35 shots for slightly over 28 percent and Hiland matched the figure with 13 for 47.  In the second half, the Pirates got off only 12 shots in 16 minutes of play as they were forced to rely on foul shots for their points.  Big Dan Bleininger led the way for Coach Glenn Bower's Pirates, hooping 14 points, 10 coming at the foul line.  Roy Yoder managed 12 points, popping in 4 field goals.  Andy Ahijevyeh and Don Hochstetler paced Hiland with 10 counters apiece.  The Hiland Reserves put the hurt on the Garaway Reserves (1-1) 37-25.

WEST LAFAYETTE - After a tight first half, the Midvale Blue Devils (2-0) turned on the steam after intermission to demote the West Lafayette Generals (0-1) Friday night.  It was the second straight victory of the young season for Coach Pete Hilliard's cagers.  It was the opening game of the year for the host hardwood crew.  The score was all tied, 13-13 at the end of the first period, but Midvale opened up an 8-point lead at the halfway mark.  The Devils tossed in 18 points in the third frame, while the Generals could manage only 5 and that was the ball game.  Nine Blue Devils got into the scoring column, paced by Dean DeMattio with 12 points and Bob Byers picked up 11 counters for the evening's workout.  Gary McElfresh tossed in 9 points to top losers.  In the Reserve game last night, Midvale (2-0) pulled out a 52-44 decision over West Lafayette (0-1).

62 - Adamsville Bests Baltic 56-50 (11-23-61)

ADAMSVILLE - Hurt by personal fouls and cold shooting, the Baltic Eagles (0-2) dropped their second game of the season Friday to host Adamsville.  The Eagles had to do without forward Willis Mullet, who was high scorer with 15 points in the opening game, for most of the game as he picked up too many fouls.  The game was tight all the way.  Adamsville grabbed a 3 point lead at the end of the first quarter, increased it to 6 at the half, but had to hold on for dear life when Baltic came back in the second half.  The Eagles chopped the margin to 2 points, 39-37, at the end of 3 periods, but faded in the fourth.  Dick Gerber paced Baltic with 10 points, followed by Jack Miller and Don Stauffer with 8 points apiece.  Dan Lapp tossed in 18 counters to lead the winners.  Although out-rebounding Adamsville, the Eagles couldn't find the shooting touch, hitting on only 30 percent from the field and 40 percent from the foul line.  Coach Errol Jacobs traces the shooting problem to the fact that the Ealges have been practicing with almost no lights in their gym and will continue to do so until the lights arrive.  Again, no mention of a Reserve game.

PHOTO:  Port Washington Purple Riders Senior - Tony Nigro

PORT WASHINGTON - The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) displayed a fast-running offense and an aggressive defense at Port Washington (1-1) last night to down the Purple Riders.  This was the first game of the 1961-1962 season for the Indians, while Port sneaked by Stone Creek (0-1) 47-46 in their opener Friday.  Brad Kaiser hit for the first points in the contest to give the Indians a quick lead in the first minute of play.  From here on, the Indians never were headed as they piled up an 18-7 lead at the first stop.  Port narrowed the gap to 6 points at the half with a late surge, but the Indians took a 32-26 lead into the locker rooms.  Gnaden showed a well-balanced attack in the third period to pull into a 50-38 lead and then coasted on to the win.  The Indians just had too much height for Port as Coach Ron Sakola's charges controlled both boards and nearly every tip.  Neither team showed too much consistency from the floor, but the Indians hit on 13 of 20 fouls to Port's 6 of 7.  Jim McCreary of Gnadenhutten led all scorers with 20 points as both clubs had 3 men in double figures.  McCreary was followed by Roy Ervin with 17 markers and Kaiser with 16.  Port was led by Tony Nigro with 15, Tom  Loader with 12 and Alvin Fillman with 10.  In the preliminary contest, the Port Reserves (1-0) took the nod over the young Indians (0-1) by a score of 27-23.

62 - Garaway Clips Baltic 47-37 (11-16-61)

PHOTO:  The Basketball Season continues last night at Garaway High School when Don Bleininger (33) outjumped Baltic's Jack Miller (24) to start their battle.  Others in the picture are, left to right:  Geof Stevanus (41), Larry Kaser (14), Roy Yoder (25), Dick Gerber (5), Willis Mullet (23), Don Deetz (23), Wayne Burkey (43) and Dale Lautensleger (12).

SUGARCREEK - Starting right where they left off last year, the Garaway Pirates (1-0) kicked the lid off their 1961-1962 basketball season Thursday night by scuttling the Eagles of Baltic (0-1) 47-37 at Garaway high School.  A combination of hot shooting from the outside by Garaway and ice cold accuracy on the part of the Eagles put the game in the victory column in the first half for the host Pirates who in reality were the visitors.  The game was originally scheduled for the Baltic gym, but incompleted repairs there forced the Eagles to travel to Garaway to become the "home" team.  To add to the confusion, the Baltic Reserves forgot their uniforms and had to go home to pick them up.  As a result, both games were late getting started.  The "visiting" Pirates got off to a fast start as Roy Yoder dropped in a pair of foul shots with only 3 seconds run off the clock.  Big Don Bleininger got the first field goal of the season as he spun around in the pivot and dropped one in from the left side.  In no time at all, the Pirates led 15-5, but settled for an 8 point margin, 15-7, at the quarter stop.  It wasn't until 2 minutes into the second stanza that Baltic got it's first field goal, a one-hander from the key by Willis Mullet.  The Pirates, who had little trouble in solving the Baltic man-to-man defense in the first period, quickly ruined the Eagles' zone attempt in the second frame as they rammed home 6 of 9 attempts, all but one of the buckets coming from the outside.  Midway through the fourth period the Pirates scored on 5 straight fouls to take their biggest lead of the game, 47-26.  Coach Glenn Bower then cleared his bench and the Eagles got hot, closing out the scoring with 11 straight points.  Garaway's Yoder, who sat out most of the third quarter and then fouled out early in the fourth, shared scoring honors with Mullet, each netting 15 points.  Yoder connected on 5 of 8 field goal attempts, most of them long one-hand jumpers from the top of the key.  Dan Bleininger had 10 points for the Pirates, accounting for 7 of those in the first period.  The Pirates hit 42 percent from the field for the night, canning 16 of 38 attempts.  Baltic hit 12 of 46 for 26 percent.  Garaway's Junior Varsity (1-0)over-came a bad start to romp over the Baltic Reserves (0-1) in the preliminary game, 35-17.

STONE CREEK - A final desparation shot fell through the net as the buzzer sounded, but it wasn't enough to pull out a victory for Stone Creek's Panthers (0-1) as they fell to the invading Port Washington Purple Riders (1-0) last night.  Port led all the way holding 13-7, 24-13 and 35-28 leads at the quarter stops before Stone Creek got hot in the  final quarter to make things uncomfortable.  Larry Laisure dropped in one of his 2 foul shots with less than a minute remaining to provide Port Washington with the victory.  It was the first game of the season for both teams.  The difference was evident at the foul line where the Riders hit on 51 percent, while the Panthers connected on only 21 percent.  Tony Nigro and Alvin Fillman shared scoring honors for the winners with 11 points apiece.  Ed Wallace hit for 14 points and Bob Hamilton counted for 11 to pace Stone Creek.  There was no mention of a Reserve game.

PORT WASHINGTON - Donald E. Durham has been named head baseball and basketball coach at Port Washington High School.  Chosen from among 50 applicants for the post vacated by Dick King, who has accepted the cage post at Centersburg High School, Durham comes to Port highly recommended.  Durham, who will also assist in track, is a 1952 graduate of Willington High School where he was a member of the  varsity baseball and basketball teams 3 years.

Following his graduation he was given a tryout by the former Boston Braves and invited to Spring training camp.  Meanwhile, he was drafted for military service and spent the next 3 years as a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Fort Lewis, Washington.  He is a recent graduate of Ashland College where he majored in health and physical education and minored in biological science.  He is married and the father of 2 pre-school age children.  At Ashland, he was a member of both the freshmen baseball and basketball teams after which he gave up athletics because of his home responsibilities.  Durham will teach health, biology and physical education  in addition to his coaching duties.

62 - King Resigns Position At Port Washington

PHOTO:  Port Washington Purple Riders Head Coach - Richard (Dick) E. King

PORT WASHINGTON - Richard E. King has resigned as Head Coach of all sports at Port Washington to accept a position at Centerburg, it was reported today by John P. Toth Jr., Port Washington Superintendent.  King, who has been head coach at Port for the past 2 years, was released from his contract Monday night at a special meeting of the Salem-Washington Board of Education.  A graduate of Dennison High School and Muskingum College, King coached the Port Wshington cage teams to highly respectable marks of 9-11 in 1959-1960 and 8-10 in 1960-1961.  In County Class "A" tournaments; however, King's squads had the misfortune to be paired with Tuscarawas Valley powerhouses and lost close first-round clashes (82-71 and 59-57) both years.

At Centerburg, King will serve as head basketball and track coach, assistant football coach and will teach physical education classes.  He was one of 40 applicants for the position.  The Knox County School reached "sweet sixteen" in the 1960-1961 Class "A" Basketball Tournament, going to the regionals at Athens where it was eliminated by Old Washington.  Several members  from this squad will return this Fall, including 6'5" Bob Watson who was named to the All-Ohio Second Team this year.

In announcing King's resignation, Supt. Toth commented, "At Port Washington, Mr. King's athletic teams were well coached and highly respected by all opponents."  In addition to his coaching duties, he also taught physical education, veneral science, biology and health.  The board also accepted the resignation of Mrs. King, who had served as school secretary the past 2 years.  Supt. Toth also announced applications now are being accepted for replacements for the couple.

61 - Port Washington Purple Riders Basketball Varsity Season Roundup (1960-1961)

PHOTO:  Port Washington Purple Riders Basketball Head Coach - Richard E. King (Dennison High School 51 - Muskingum College 56 - United States Navy 58) 17-23

PHOTO:  Port Washington Purple Riders 1961 - ROW 1:  Asst Manager Bob Skaer, Roger Beighley, Ken Gay, Larry Laisure, Tom Loader, Paul Schwab, Steve Bender.  ROW 2:  Head Coach Dick King, Alvin Fillman, Gary Gay, Tony Nigro, Jim Hannahs, Jim Bender, Bill Phillips and Manager Bill Jones.

Head Coach Richard King and the fans of Port Washington were looking forward to perhaps one of the best basketball season in a long time.  In coach King's first season he guided a team that had only won 3 games the previous season and climbed to a near solid .429 season of 9-12.  Although Port lost a great rebounder who scored 152 points last season as Bill Fisher and his family moved to Newcomerstown where he became an all-star athlete,  Port still had the return of Seniors Bill Phillips and Jim Bender.  Both players were Tuscarawas County all-stars and strong scoring machines.  Senior Gary Gay would move up from a great reserve season to a third guard position on the varsity team, while the squad picked up two 6' 2" players with the likes of Junior Tony Nigro, also from last year's reserve team, and the return of Senior Jim Hannahs after missing a year of basketball.  Then with a reliable player coming off the bench like Junior Alvin Fillman, Port was staring at a solid season.

The Riders began the 1960-1961 year by kicking butt at Gnadenhutten and leading by 20 points at halftime.  Unfortunately, Gnaden came right back like gangbusters and eased past Port late in the 4th quarter for a hard fought 57-54 comeback win.  The surprise loss was just as jolting as our 20 point lead.  It took the next game at Malvern, a 63-37 triumph to shake off the teams initial loss and realize "That's the breaks...It happens!"  But with the loss to Keene 62-57 and win at Augusta 89-53 they began to see the pattern.  It would be a back-and-forth season as most Port Washington teams were and this season would be exception.  The high-lights during the 8-11 season were beating Midvale (6-2) 60-59, hitting a league leading 92 points against Stone Creek, the opening of Port's new gym, and being the best offense team in the county.  This team was the first to play in Port Washington's new state-of-the-art gymnaisum.  Bill Phillips and Jim Bender made The Daily Reporter's All-Star Team and Jim was also named to the County Coaches' All-Star Team.  In addition, Jim Bender lead all scorers in the Tuscarawas County League with 182 points.
