62 - Ashland College Graduate Named New Port Mentor

PORT WASHINGTON - Donald E. Durham has been named head baseball and basketball coach at Port Washington High School.  Chosen from among 50 applicants for the post vacated by Dick King, who has accepted the cage post at Centersburg High School, Durham comes to Port highly recommended.  Durham, who will also assist in track, is a 1952 graduate of Willington High School where he was a member of the  varsity baseball and basketball teams 3 years.

Following his graduation he was given a tryout by the former Boston Braves and invited to Spring training camp.  Meanwhile, he was drafted for military service and spent the next 3 years as a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Fort Lewis, Washington.  He is a recent graduate of Ashland College where he majored in health and physical education and minored in biological science.  He is married and the father of 2 pre-school age children.  At Ashland, he was a member of both the freshmen baseball and basketball teams after which he gave up athletics because of his home responsibilities.  Durham will teach health, biology and physical education  in addition to his coaching duties.
