PORT WASHINGTON - Port Washington athletes and fans were treated to a novel program last night as Vince Costello of the Cleveland Browns expounded on the only sport that is not a part of the Purple Riders program - football.  The crowd of some 100 was none-the-less impressed by the husky Magnolia native who many have watched on television.  Top awards of the evening went to the four playing and one non-playing Seniors who formed the nucleus for the Port Washington athletic program.  Receiving the "Oscars" were Jim Hannahs, Jim Bender, Bill Phillips, Gary Gay and Manager Bill Jones.  All were active in at least three sports this past year.  Special trophies were presented to Alvin Fillman, top varsity foul shooter; Ken Gay, top foul shooter for reserves; Jim Hannahs, top rebounder  and Bill Phillips, Most Valuable Player in basketball and recepient of an all-county awards from The Daily Times.  Juniors receiving awards included Tony Nigro, Fillman and Manager Bob Skaer.  Sophomores were Larry Laisure, Roger Beighley, Paul Schwab, Wayne Blind and Tom Loader.  Ken Gay and Steve Bender were the lone Freshmen receiving athletic awards.  Coach Dick King, following his second year at Port, made the presentations for varsity basketball, baseball and track.  Neil Compton made awards for Grade and Junior High participants.

Costello, a popular speaker told the crowd, seated in the school's new gymnasium, that the
outlook of the Browns is bright, especially with the improved play of quarterback Milt Plum.  Addessing himself to the athletes, he said every boy should strive for three characteristics to both enjoy and improve the athletic program.  He listed them as excellence, humility and faith.  Bob Bender served as toastmaster, Rev. Rettig gave invocation, and Executive Head John Toth gave the welcome.  Entertainment was  provided by students and an adult singing quartet.  A special first year award, was also presented to the school in behalf of the parents, saluting all those youngsters who took part in the athletic program.
