59 - Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball League Scoring (12-24-58)

Gnadenhutten's ace forward, Ron Bradley, has taken a strangle hold on the individual scoring lead in the Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball League. With the league half over, Bradley has piled up 151 points to almost double the aggregate compiled by runnerup Gary Caviness of Tuscarawas. Bradley has averaged 30.2 points a game in leading Gnadenhutten to a perfect 5-0 loop mark. Behind Gary Caviness, who has caged 85 points, is Midvale's Ron Breniser with 68 points. Breniser jumped from sixth to third place as a result of league action last week. Tuscarawas Valley's Ben Price and Gary Caviness are the only other cagers who have averaged better than 20 points a game. Both are averaging 21.0. The league, idle during the holiday season, will swing back into loop warfare Friday night, January 9, with a top-notch card. Featured on the usual four-game agenda will be the meeting of unbeaten Midvale (4-0) and Tuscarawas Valley (3-0) on the Midvale court. While those titans duel, Gnadenhutten (5-0) will seek to gain ground against one when it invades Garaway (2-2). Stone Creek (2-2) invades Strasburg (0-4) and Port Washington (0-4) is at Baltic (1-3) in the other tussles. Tuscasrawas (1-3) will play at Brewster the same night in a non-league game.

59 - Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball Scoring (12-23-58)

Newcomerstown (0-6) will be involved in action tonight. The Trojans will be at Garaway (5-4) to do battle with the Pirates whose four defeats have been by a total of only 14 points. Midvale's Blue Devils (7-1) will play host to West Lafayette and Stone Creek (4-4) entertains Augusta in games originally scheduled on November 28, but postponed because of the heavy snow which tied up transportation. In County scoring, Ron Bradley has poured home 267 points in 10 games to lead his closest competitor, John Rice of Baltic, by 65 points. Rice missed out on one game last week because of Illiness. John Rice now has 202 points, 15 better than teammate Gary Gerber in third spot. Diminutive Bill Phillips, 5-6 ace of the Port Washington Purple Riders, vaulted into fourth place last week with a 71-point spree that put him at 167 for the campaign. All told, 17 of the county's Class "A" cagers have scored more than 100 points to date. Many should surpass the 200-point mark before the regular season comes to a close.

The Riders followed up with a 43-42 victory here Saturday night, coming from behind to bag the decision. Pint-sized Bill Phillips once again was the big man in the Port attack, sinking the winning basket with 15 seconds left to finish the night with 22 points. Port led 22-18 at halftime, but trailed 11-8 at the first quarter and 34-33 at the three-quarter mark. PORT WASHINGTON - A welcome Christmas gift was bestowed on the team and fans of Port Washington here last night as the Purple Riders (1-7) broke a 7-game losing streak for this season and a 16 game losing streak dating back to last season, by nipping Roscoe 64-60. Coach Tom Davies' chargers hope to add another present tonight when they move to Malvern for a game postponed because of snow several weeks ago. Taking a night off from county league play, Port moved from an 8-point deficit at halftime to the hard-earned victory with John Landon potting the ultimate winning bucket late in the last stanza. Port moved from the 35-27 deficit at halftime to a 52-47 advantage in the third quarter with Bill Phillips pacing the attack with help from John Landon and Jim Hannahs. Bill Phillips finished with scoring laurels on 20, while Jim Hannahs canned 12 and John Landon 11. The Port Washington Reserves (2-6) started the sweep earlier with a 56-35 win over the Roscoe Reserves.

59 - Tuscarawas Class A Basketball League (12-20-58)

The "rich" got richer in the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball League play Friday night. Unbeaten Gnadenhutten, Midvale and Tuscarawas Valley notched victories and unless someone exerts a strong influence in remaining league conflicts, one of those clubs is due to walk off with the bunting. Gnadenhutten (5-0) (8-2) tallied its fifth straight loop success by nipping Stone Creek (2-2) (4-4) in a 62-60 battle. Midvale (4-0) (7-1) notched No. 4 in a row with a 74-63 decision over Tuscarawas (1-3) (2-5) and Tuscarawas Valley (3-0) (7-0) made it three straight in league warfare by tripping Strasburg (0-4) (2-6) 47-32. Tusky Valley's win enabled it to continue among the ranks of the unbeaten for the entire season. Gnadenhutten bumped Midvale from the unbeaten on Tuesday night. Garaway's Pirates (2-2) (5-4) evened their league slate with an easy 71-45 verdict over Baltic (1-3) (4-7) in last night's other league fracas. Port Washington (0-4) (1-7) was idle in league competition last night, but ended a 7-game losing streak with a 64-60 win over Roscoe.

59 - County League Frays Bear Watching Friday (12-18-58)

There'll be plenty of interest in tomorrow night's four-game card in the Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball League. All of the league's unbeaten quintets - Gnadenhutten (4-0) (7-2), Midvale (3-0) (6-1) and Tuscarawas Valley (2-0) (6-0) - will be active and they may be pressed to win. Gnadenhutten is at home to Stone Creek (2-1) (4-3), Midvale entertains Tuscarawas (1-2) (2-4) and Tuscarawas Valley will play host to Strasburg (0-3) (2-5). Garaway (1-2) (4-4) and Baltic (1-2) (4-6) will battle at Baltic in the fourth contest. Gnadenhutten will bank its victory hopes on the high-scoring Ron Bradley who has amassed 115 points in the Indians' four loop wins to date. He also tops all county scorers with 231 points for the entire season. Gary Caviness, who ranks second to Bradley in league action with 72 points, will be Tuscarawas' big hope as the Broncos seek to upset Midvale. The Blue Devils lost a 78-76 non-league decision to Gnadenhutten Tuesday night for their first loss after six victories. Diminutive Bill Phillips of Port Washington is in third place in the league scoring race with 63 points. Aside from Bradley and Caviness, who have averaged 28.8 and 24.0 per game in league play, Tusky Valley's Ben Price and Roy Buchanan also are skimming along above the 20-point mark. Price has averaged 22.0 points a game, Buchanan 20.5.

PORT WASHINGTON - Tuscarawas (2-4), which snapped a four-game losing streak last week, rolled to its second straight victory here last night by upending Port Washington (0-7) 67-55. The Broncos were never in trouble as they built up 17-6, 35-24 and 55-33 quarter leads before Port Washington shook off some of its lethargies in the final quarter to outscore the victors 22-12. Port did come up with one accomplishment. The Purple Riders held Gary Caviness, Tuscarawas scoring ace, to one of his lowest outputs of the season - 18 points. Caviness still led the Tusky attack with Dick Robinson, Bud Eckhardt and Bill Johnson all amassing 14. Diminutive Bill Phillips captured scoring honors; however, with 29 points. The Tuscarawas Reserves stopped the Port Washington Reserves (1-6) earlier 55-36.

59 - Midvale-Stone Creek Clash Is "A" Feature (12-11-58)

One of the four undefeated Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball League teams is bound to drop from the elite class tomorrow night when the loop moves into action with a four-game program. The unbeaten team to go, insofar as league records are concerned, will be either Midvale (2-0) (5-0) or Stone Creek (2-0) (4-1). The two clubs, scheduled to meet at Stone Creek, both have captured two league decisions to date. Midvale will have a little more incentive for victory. The Blue Devils have gone unbeaten in five season starts to date, wrapping up No. 5 Tuesday night in a non-league fracas at Strasburg. Stone Creek enters the big battle with a 4-1 season record. Gnadenhutten (3-0) (5-2) and Tuscasrawas Valley (1-0) (4-0), the other unbeaten loop teams, also will be in action tomorrow night. Gnadenhutten will be after its fourth straight league success when it invades Port Washington (0-3) (0-4). Tusky Valley will be after win No. 2 when it plays host to Garaway (1-1) (3-3). In other action, Strasburg (0-2) (1-4) invades Tuscarawas (0-2) (0-4) for a clash which will produce the first loop win for either club. Both have lost two straight league decisions to date. Ron Bradley, Gnadenhutten's veteran forward, has taken an early lead in the individual league scoring race. In statistics compiled by The Daily Reporter sports department, Bradley has ripped the nets for 81 points in three league contests. John Rice of Baltic, who is idle in league competition this week, is runnerup with 57. Rice tops all County Class A scorers for the season with 194 points.

59 - Panthers (4-1) Seek Big Victory (12-11-58)

Stone Creek's Panthers will be seeking their third win in County Class "A" Basketball League play tomorrow night when they entertain the undefeated Midvale Blue Devils. Under the coaching of Ernie Lukens, a graduate of Miami University of Oxford, the Panthers are losers of only one of five games, having been defeated 67-48 by Garaway in a non-league contest. The Panthers are well on their way to a top notch mark, having topped Fresno 62-46 in the opener and following with wins of 43-42 over Port Washington, 44-33 over Tuscarawas and 67-57 over Baltic last Tuesday night. The Panthers who have seen the most action in games to date: Harold Lahmers, Terry Sauser, Dan Wherley, Paul Patrick and Jim McAfee. McAfee (5-7) a Senior letterman, is the current leading scorer on the team with 90 points. The other letterman on the squad is Lahmers (6-1), also a Senior. He is the second leading pointgetter with 68. Wherley (5-9) is a guard and a top notch defensive player, having scored only 29 points, while Patrick, (5-9) and Terry Sauser (5-10) are the forwards. They have tallied 34 points each. Other members of the varsity squad are Dave Hanni, rated sixth man, Charles Doll, Glen McCoy, Larry Lorenz, Larry Stephon and Gale Sauser.

Garaway High's leading scorer, center Charley Stingel, sat most of the last period with a sprained ankle, but was in the lineup long enough to pace the Pirates (1-1) (3-2) to their victory over Port Washington (0-3) (0-4). Stingel took the night's honors with 22 points, although he was pulled out of the contest in the final quarter by Coach Jim Stull when someone accidentally stepped on his foot. Stull said it was nothing serious; however, he should be back in the lineup by next Tuesday. Stingel was given plenty assistance in the scoring column as Koran Zehnder potted 20 points, John Sigrist added 13 and Bud Yakley had 10. Diminutive Bill Phillips led the Riders of Coach Tom Davies with 17 points, while Jim Bender tallied 10. The seniorless Purple Riders were deadlocked with the Pirates at 15-all when the first buzzer sounded, but the Garaway invaders moved out to a 39-23 halftime advantage and then raced on for the win. The Port Washington Graders (1-0) got the night off with a 27-20 win over the Garaway Graders. The Garaway Reserves followed by crushing the Port Washington Reserves (1-3) 63-31.

59 - Tuscarawas County Basketball League (12-6-58)

Although the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball League has had only two full nights of action thus far, advance notice was given last night that it would be a red-hot race down to the wire before the champion is decided early in February. Gnadenhutten's Indians (3-0) (4-2) current slate begain by copping its third straight triumph in a 65-47 romp over Strasburg (0-2) (1-3). Defending champion Midvale (2-0) (4-0) and Stone Creek (2-0) (3-1) chalked up their second victories to also, keep clean loop slates. The Devils were pushed the distance before squeezing out a 73-71 victory over Baltic (1-2) (4-4), while the Panthers had an easier time when they topped Tuscarawas (0-2) (0-3) 44-33. Garaway's Pirates (1-1) (3-2) copped their initial league verdict by coming up with the biggest offensive output to trample Port Washington (0-3) (0-4) 86-42. Tuscarawas Valley (1-0) (3-0) was the only league team idle. The Trojans made good use of its "spare" time to waltz by the Dennison Railroaders 73-33.

59 - Strasburg Tests Cage Loop's Best (12-4-58)

Four Tuscarawas County Class "A" League games, the only loop games programmed this week, will be played Friday night. Featured will be the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-0) (3-2) who will be going after their third straight loop victory when they invade Strasburg (0-1) (1-2). The Indians have squeezed out one-point decisions over Baltic 51-50 and Tuscarawas 46-45, but will have to be at their best against the improved Bengals. Midvale (1-0) (3-0) will travel to Baltic (1-1) (4-3), Stone Creek (1-0) (2-1) invades Tuscarawas (0-1) (0-2) and Garaway (0-1) (2-2) moves to Port Washington (0-2) (0-3) in the other loop contests. Tuscarawas Valley (1-0) (2-0), the other loop member, is involved in a non-county league game Friday night. The Trojans make their home debut against Dennison's Railroaders.

The tall veterans from Tuscarawas Valley (1-0) (1-0) proved too much for the Seniorless Port Washington Purple Riders (0-2) (0-3) after the first quarter. The Riders of Coach Tom Davies stayed right with the Trojans through the first period and after leading for a short time, fell short at the stop 12-11. From then on the height of the TV squad of Coach Bob Heller took its toll. The Trojans boomed out to 37-18 and 49-29 leads at the next stops. Ben Price, 6-5 forward for the Trojans, led the winning attack with 20 points, while another veteran, Roy Buchanan, chimed in with 19 and Chuck Locker contributed 12. Port Captain John Landon paced the Riders with 16 points, while Larry Hagan added 10 to the cause. The Port Washington Reserves (1-2) met the same fate, as the Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (1-0) dusted off Port 48-34.

59 - Tuscarawas County Basketball League (11-26-10)

FIRST TIME SINCE 1940 - Gnadenhutten's Indians (2-1) are the early leaders in the race for Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball League honors today...and they've done it the hard way. Coach Bob Gaume's charges scored their second straight one-point loop victory last night, topping Tuscarawas (0-2) 46-45 in the closing seconds of play on a free throw. The Indians, who now are idle in loop activity until December 5, opened their season last Friday night with a 51-50 margin over Baltic (4-2). Baltic broke into the victory column in league play last night with a 67-61 victory over Strasburg (0-2), the first time the Eagles had measured the Tigers in basketball activity since the 1939-1940 season. Records showed a string of 23 straight victories for Strasburg since losing a 30-29 decision 18 years ago. In other loop contests last night, Tuscarawas Valley (1-0) proved too much for Port Washington (0-3) 71-46 and Midvale (3-0) eked out a 54-52 conquest over Garaway (1-2). It was the opening league contest for Strasburg, Tuscarawas, Tusky Valley, Midvale and Garaway quintets.

59 - Tusky Valley Is Better Balanced This Season (11-25-58)

When Tuscarawas Valley travels to Port Washington for its opening game of the season tonight, they will floor one of the most balanced basketball teams in the country. "I played all 12 boys on the varsity squad, switching them around to various combinations, in the preview last week at Conotton Valley and as far as I could see there was no appreciable difference between any of the group," commented Coach Bob Heller yesterday afternoon. He added, "A good example of our better balance this season is the fact that we will be able to go without Benny (Price, 6-5 forward) if we have to. Last year Ben was injured a couple of times and we just didn't move without him. As Benny went, so went the team. But this year that will be different." From 51 boys who originally tried out for teams from the Freshman through the Senior grades, Heller and assistant Ed Baran have cut the group down to 38, 12 of which are on the varsity team. Four veterans in Clarence Cantrill, Jerry Pullins, Price and Roy Buchanan return for this season. Cantrill, 5-8 Junior and Pullins, 5-9 Junior, are guards and will be sharing the posts with Ron Lake, Jim Studer and Richard Wolfe. Heller has moved Price from center to forward this season and Benny is battling for the job with Buchanan and Pete Eberly, while Chuck Locker, Dale Duerr and Gary Robbins are currently in a red hot fight for the center job. Heller rates his players so equal that as of yesterday afternoon he had no idea who would receive starting berths in tonight's opening game. The Trojans will be out to improve on their 11-6 record of last season. "We'll be giving these other teams a run for their money. There'll be no walk away in this league this year and I feel certain that we can win more than our share," finished Heller.

BEACH CITY - Beach City's Pirates made it two straight here Saturday night when they swamped the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-2) 67-33. Port, under new head mentor Tom Davies, suffered the second loss in as many nights, having lost to Stone Creek (2-0) Friday night. John Spidle led the way for the winners with 31 points, while Bill Phillips hit for 11 for Port Washington. The Pirates, who lost all their games last season, took a 12-0 lead and coasted the rest of the way over the fighting, but outclassed visitors. Beach lead 38-16 at half time. In the Reserve game, Beach City clobbered Port Washington (1-1) 32-25.

STONE CREEK - Terry Sauser, 5-10 forward, sank two foul shots with 45 seconds remaining to play to give Stone Creek's Panthers (1-0) (2-0) a 43-42 victory over invading Port Washington (0-1) (0-1) in a County League game here last night. Sauser's free throws made the score 43-40, but Port's John Landon came back to hit from the field once for the final gap. The Purple Riders had an opportunity to go ahead in the final seven seconds, but lost possession of the ball. The Riders of new coach Tom Davies tied the game at 34-34 at the end of the third period when the Panthers garnered only one point after leading 33-32 at half time. Stone Creek's superior height proved to be the difference and Coach Ernie Lukens' crew came out with its second victory of the campaign. Bill Phillips of the Riders ended with scoring laurels when he hit for seven fielders and five fouls for 19 points. Jim McAfee led Stone Creek with 15, while Terry Sauser chipped in with 12. The Panthers had an extremely poor night from the field when they hit only 15 times in 68 action tries for 22 percent. Port Washington is currently on a 10 game losing streak dating back to January 8th of this year after they beat Conesville by one point 53-52 in the 1957-1958 Season. They haven't won a league game dating back to the 1957 season. Today's league game was their 11th straight. The Port Washington Reserves (1-0) just got by the Stone Creek Reserves 27-26.

59 - Strasburg Will Floor Inexperienced Quintet (11-21-58)

With only one veteran returning this season, Strasburg High School will be represented by a highly inexperienced basketball team this season. The Tigers, who open their 1958-1959 slate tonight on the home floor against the Beach City's Pirates, are under the first-year tutelage of Ernest Raber, a native of Sugarcreek. Raber replaces Chuck Canifor, who now devotes full time duties to coaching football and being principal. Frank Wallick, a 6-2 Junior, is the lone returnee from last year's squad which compiled an 11-8 record. However, his action was limited to the extent that it was just enough for him to gain a varsity letter. Another letter winner last season, Senior Nick Haswell, is not on the squad this season. "We definitely have very little or no experience to speak of," commented the new Strasburg mentor yesterday afternoon. "We are attempting to build for the future and with only one Senior on the squad that should be evident. We don't expect to burn up the league this season, but we'll still be in there battling to win our share. With more experience, I think these boys will do all right," he added. Rounding out the probable starting linep will be Charles Duff, 5-11, Dale Liggett, 5-11 or Bill Seese, 6-1, at the forwards, which would give Raber a starting quintet comprised entirely of Juniors. Lone Senior on the squad is Bill Dreher, a six-footer. Also members of the varsity team are Sophomores Tom Jones and Ray Deibel and Junior Herb Gerber.

TUSCARAWAS COUNTY BASKETBALL LEAGUE OPENS TONIGHT, WITH TWO GAMES ON THE SCHEDULE - The initial Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball League action gets under way tonight with two games on tap. Port Washington, in its season's opener, will travel to Stone Creek, while Baltic's Eagles will carry a 3-1 mark into its fray at Gnadenhutten. Three other games tonight see four teams opening their 1958-1959 campaigns. Strasburg's Tigers will entertain Beach City in the initial test for both squads, while Augusta and Midvale square off for their openers on the Devils' court. Garaway's Pirates, seeking their first win after a loss to Baltic in their opener, will travel to Fresno. In action with county combines thus far, Fresno has downed Baltic, while losing to Stone Creek.

59 - Baltic Mentor Seeks Take-Charge Cagers (11-20-58)

PHOTO: Baltic High School - Home of the Baltic Eagles

After four games Baltic's new cage mentor, Tom Bellville, is still looking for a "take charge" performer. "We have several boys who have shown the quality of leadership at times thus far, but there's no one player who actually stands out above the others," he explained. "And to have a consistent winner week after week, you need someone who is a good ball handler as well as a team leader when it is on the floor," added Bellville, who replaced his brother, Jack, at the Eagle helm this season. Already "veterans" of the court game with four contests behind them and looking toward to Friday night for an invasion of Gnadenhutten and their first County League battle, the Eagles include three returning letter winners. In John Rice, 5-11 Junior forward, Bellville has one of the hottest shooters in the area. John was among the leaders in scoring last season when he amassed 405 points. He already has his eye adjusted hoopward, having totaled 107 points in the four games. Sam Jacobs rattled the nets for 245 points last season. The only Senior on the team, he stands 6-0 and has been playing at a forward post. The other vet is Gary Gerber, a 5-10 Junior guard. He had 173 points last Winter. At 6-3, Dick Lautenslagar, a Junior, is the tallest man on the team and is holding down the center post, while Dave Berger and Bob Ladrach are the others among the top six on the 10-man squad. Berger is a 5-4 Junior and Ladrach, a 6-1 Sophomore. Rounding out the squad are Junior Bill Froelich, 6-1, and Sophomores Gary Mast, 5-6, Charlie McPherson, 6-2, and Ted Oswald, 6-1. With a 3-1 mark to date the Eagles hope to better last year's 13-8 record.

59 - Four Vets Bolster Garaway (Stull In Fourth Season) (11-19-58)

PHOTO: Garaway High School - Home of the Garaway Pirates

Four veterans form the nucleus of the 1958-1959 edition of the Garaway High Pirates basketball team. Leading the returning group this season is Junior center Charley Stingel who scorched the baskets for 317 points to gain a berth on the Daily Reporter's All-County elite 10 as a Sophomore last Spring. Koran Zehnder, who was the second highest scorer on the team as a Sopohomore last season, also returns along with Seniors Larry Yakley and Dean Burrell. Zehnder swished the nets for 231 points last season, while Yakley totaled 199. Burrell was one of the lower point gatherers on the team last season when he ended with only 61. Zehnder, 5-10, and Yakley 5-6, are guards, while Burrell, 6-1, is currently holding down one of the forward posts on the team which dropped a 73-72 decision to Baltic last Friday night in the season's opener. Rounding out the top six on the 11-man squad are Senior John Sigrist, 6-1, and Junior Jim Gerber 5-10 1/2. Fritz Mueller is the other Senior on the squad and is 6-1, while the other six-footer on the team is Tom Dennis a Junior. The other Junior is Gene Stevanus 5-10 1/2, while also battling for varsity berths are Sophomores Tom Andress, 5-11 1/2 and Bud Yakley, 5-4. In view of all the changes in the county's coaching structure this season, Pirate mentor Jim Stull, in his fourth season at the helm, is a veteran and rates second only to Midvale's Pete Hilliard in length of stay at a county school. The Pirates will be seeking to gain the win trail for the first time this season when they go in their second game Friday night at Fresno.

59 - County Class A Cagers Open Week's Slate Tonight (11-18-58)

Football will be forgotten this week when County Class A cage combines begin tonight. Four games are on this evening. Baltic's Eagles (2-1), already veterans of the 1958-1959 season with three games under their belts, travel to Plainfield. The Eagles are one of the many county schools under a new head mentor this season. They are being coached by Tom Bellville, brother of former tutor Jack, this season. Last year the Eagles ended with a 13-8 record. Stone Creek, which ended last season with a 13-9 mark under Eddie McGlumphy who is now the cage boss at Martins Ferry, will be coached by Ernest Larkens, a graduate of Miami of Ohio, this season. Fresno, a 73-66 winner over Baltic recently, will furnish the opening game opposition. Bob Gaume replaces Dick Scott, now at Denison University, as head of the teepee at Gnadenhutten. The Indians were runnerups in the county tourney last Spring and copped the sectional title before losing out to Powhatan in the district, will be out to improve upon last yer's 20-7 mark when they open at Freeport. Two county league battles will head Friday night's calendar. Port Washington travels to Stone Creek and Baltic to Gnadenhutten. Port ended with a 1-18 record last season under Bill Oppenheimer. Tutoring the Purple Riders this year will be Tom Davies. Chuck Caniford relinquishes the head basketball duties to Ernest Raber, a native of Sugarcreek, when the Strasburg Tigers open their season by entertaining Beach City's Pirates. The Bengals were 11-8 under Caniford, who now is devoting full time to coaching football and handling the principal's job. Midvale's Blue Devils, minus only one player in Russ Hobart from last year's 19-3 squad, will open its season at home by entertaining Augusta. The Devils return to the courts Saturday night when they travel to Tuscarawas for the Broncos' opener, while Port Washington treks to Beach City. Tuscarawas, also under the guidance of a new mentor this season, ended last season with a 5-13 mark. Heading them this season is Kermit Smulbach, who coached at Dundee High School three years ago.

Hiland and Gnadenhutten were victorious last night in the annual basketball preview staged at the Gnaden gym. Hiland eeked out a sudden-death victory over the Stone Creek Panthers 18-16, while the host club dropped Port Washington 27-15. The Gnadenhutten Reserve squad also notched its first win when it routed the Purple Riders 28-11. With the score tied at 11-all at the end of the first period, Hiland moved ahead 15-11 shortly after the first overtime period began, but the Panthers rallied to tie the contest again, this time at 15-all. Only one point was scored by each club in the second overtime as the score was locked at 16-all. However, Bob Weaver iced the victory for the newly Hiland Hawks when he made the decisive bucket from the corner. Bob Miller led the Hawks scoring, while Terry Sauder, Don Wherley and Paul Patrick all had four points for Stone Creek. Ron Bradley paced the Indians to their victory when he ripped the nets for 12 points. John Hall followed with 6 markers, while Jim Bender led Port with four points. The host club ran off to a 13-2 halftime lead and Coach Bob Gaume substituted freely. Ed Crites led the Gnaden Reserves with 10 points, while Tony Nigro led Port's Reserve Team with eight.
