PORT WASHINGTON - The Salem-Washington School District should launch a building program with all possible speed, it was unanimously decided last night at a "Town Hall" meeting of the Ohio State Conference on Education here last night. Decision on launching of the Grant came after Edward Dichler, president of the Salem-Washington Board of Education, reported on the results of a September 16 meeting of the boards of Salem-Washington, Rush and Gnadenhutten along with the County Board. The meeting was called by County Superintendent W.E. Laws to discuss possibilities of consolidation. Dichler reported the Port Washington board is in complete agreement for a new consolidated high school in a central location, but that the Gnadenhutten board is opposed to the proposal. As a result, Dichler said, the proposed consolidation cannot be effected with Rush, Port Washington and Gnadenhutten, as the participants. Concensus of opinion of citizens present last night was that the best possible solution to overcrowded schools would be a consolidated school at a central location. In November of last year Salem-Washington citizens approved such a consolidation.

It was decided; however, that as Port Washington area officials seemingly have exhausted all possibilities toward consolidation the only alternative was for a building program. After the desparate need for additional space was stressed and the amount of money available for construction was announced, it was unanimously decided to launch a building program. There were four discussion groups last night - teachers, curriculum, finances and organization. Results will be summarized at a meeting October 14 and four delegates will be named to attend the state conference in Columbus October 28. At the close of the meeting Port Washington Superintendent John P. Toth announced there will be a Halloween parade in Port Washington October 31 and that the high school band would lead the marchers. Prizes will be awarded and doughnuts and cider will be served at the school.
