65 - Stone Creek Defense Get #14 At Baltic 54-31 (2-2-65)

BALTIC - Stone Creek (14-3) used a tight defense to the best advantage here last night to turn back Baltic (2-12).  The tough Panthers also enjoyed a hot night in shooting, sinking 47 percent from the floor and 20 of 37 charities.  Baltic, on the other hand, couldn't solve Stone Creek's defensive tactics and sank just 21 percent from action and 8 of 18 fouls.  The Eagles canned just 3 of 23 floor flings during the 1st half.  Tim Baab paced the Charles Huggins-coached Panthers with 17 points, John Flinner chipping in 13.  No one hit double figures for the Eagles of Coach Rich Polzcynski.  Stone Creek led in rebounds, 33-19.  The Panthers will host Port Washington and the Eagles greet Tuscarawas Friday.  The Stone Creek Reserves (10-2) trashed the Baltic Reserves (3-8) 54-32.

PORT WASHINGTON - A blistering hot 3rd quarter and a 30-point outburst by Leonard Cameron carried Port Washington (5-10) to victory over Baltic (2-11) here Saturday night.  The Purple Riders missed just one shot in the 3rd period to hike their advantage to 51-28 after leading by only 29-23 at the half.  Cameron erupted for 30 points, his season high, to take game laurels, nosing out Eagle Jeff Schlarb who got 27.  Dan Gay followed Cameron with 16 and Rich Fillman contributed 14.  No one else hit double figures for Baltic.  The Purple Riders, under George Thomas, canned 33 of 73 floor flings all told for 46 percent and sank 9 of 16 charities.  Port Washington will visit Stone Creek Friday.  Baltic, under Rich Polczynski, hosts Tuscarawas Friday.  The Port Washington Reserves (3-7) added to the big night by edging the Baltic Reserves (3-7) 40-35.

65 - Garaway Continues Dominance Over Hiland 50-45 (1-30-65)

BERLIN - Don't blame Hiland's Hawks (13-4) if they have ill feeling towards Garaway's Pirates (10-4).  The Hawks, losers of 3 straight early in the season, were riding high on the wings of a 10-game victory streak until they ran into the Pirates here Saturday.  But Glen Bower's Pirates, who had handed Hiland one of its losses, 52-46, ruffled their feathers a bit more by coming up with this decision for their 4th straight win.  Talented Dan Andreas, 6-3 Junior, again was the guiding force behind Garaway as he led all scorers with 19 points.  Randy Miller lended chief support, netting 11 markers.  High for the Hawks were Don Yutzy and John Hochstetler with 12 and 10 tallies, respectively.  The 2 teams battled on nearly even terms the 1st half, Garaway holding 12-10 and 21-17 margins.  But, with the smooth-working Andreas leading the way, the Pirates opened up a 10-point lead in the 3rd canto and held a 36-31 margin going into the final frame.  Andreas, Garaway's top point-producer with 230, also was outstanding under the boards as he gave his finest all-around effort of his career.  The only time Bob Schrock's Hawks led was 4-2.  A full-court press was used effectively by the Bucs, especially in the 3rd canto.  Garaway fired in 19 of 49 floor flings for 38 percent and made 12 of 21 fouls.  Hiland sank 18 of 54 from action for 35 percent and hit on 9 of 13 charities.  The Pirates host Midvale and the Hawks greet Warsaw Friday.  Hiland took the Reserve game with a 41-34 slacking of Garaway (7-5).

65 - Tusky Valley Out Rebounds Dover St. Joseph's In 75-60 Win (1-30-65)

DOVER - Superior rebounding strength enabled Tuscarawas Valley (4-10) to defeat Dover St. Joseph's (4-11) Saturday night before about 1,000 fans in Dover High Gymnasium.  Neither team as sharp, several turnovers keeping the score low until the final frame when the tempo picked up.  The count was 5-5 at 4:47 of the initial quarter at which time Ken Gold's Trojans spurted for 10 consecutive points to jump out in front 15-7.  TV stayed on top the rest of the way, although the Art Teynor-coached Ramblers pulled close, 19-18, mid-way in the 2nd stanza and trailed just 27-21 at the half.  The Trojans pulled further ahead in the 3rd canto and never were threatened again.  St. Joseph's was in personal foul trouble the entire contest and ended up with 4 players forced to the bench after accumulating 5 each.  The Ramblers' top pointmaker, Denny Capozella, and No. 2 man Mickey McCracken both were saddled with 4 before intermission and left the floor in the last period as did John Capozella.  Jeff Lammers departed in the third.  McCracken ended up as the Ramblers' leading scorer, netting 17 points.  Larry Smith hustled for 15, Denny Capozella got 12 and John Capozella 10.  Ten of Denny's came in the final 8 minutes.  Harold Swinford paced the Trojan attack, potting 20 points, Fred Clugston netted 16, Bob Burris 13, Cuck Fishley 12 and Gary Adams 11.  Burris controlled both boards, grabbing 16 rebounds.  St. Joseph's, which had won 2 in a row, will host West Holmes Friday.  Tusky Valley will greet Tuscarawas Tuesday.

Burris broke the scoring ice at 7:48 from the foul line after being fouled by Lammers as he tried to drive along the baseline.  Smith connected from the side of the key at 6:32, but Swinford countered from the corner.  John Capozella sank a charity toss to tie the count 3-3.  Swinford potted a pair of fouls and John Capozella fired through a deuce to make it 5-5.  The Trojans took turns scoring, mostly from the charity strip, to take a 15-5 advantage before McCracken scored a goal with 31 seconds left in the period.  With the count 19-13, the Trojans ahead, in the 2nd stanza, McCracken sank a pair of fouls, Roln  Rieger drilled home a goal and Smith hit at the charity line to cut the deficit to 19-18.  But, the Trojans came right back, going  to a 24-18 margin on a balanced attack once again.  St. Joseph's pulled to within 24-21, but Adams hit from out front and Fisley from the foul line before the half to make it 27-21.  Four more points at the outset of the third canto gave the Trojans a 31-27 advantage and the game was all but over.  In the Reserve game, Tuscarawas Valley (4-8) outdistanced Dover St. Joseph's 41-34.

65 - Strasburg Barely Gets By Stone Creek 64-56 (1-29-65)

STRASBURG - Forced to the limit by Stone Creek's battling Panthers (4-3) (12-3), Strasburg's Tigers (5-1) (9-5) came clawing back in the 3rd period and  moved on to victory.  It was an odd game for the Tigers.  Leading 27-19 in the second quarter, they suddenly cooled off and when halftime rolled around, Stone Creek had maneuvered out front 31-30.  Strasburg regained the lead in the 3rd quarter, leading 44-40 at its conclusion.  In the final stanza Stone Creek battled within 2 points, 54-52, before the tough Tigers pulled away to chalk up the nod.  Exhibiting a well-balanced attack, Strasburg had all 5 starters in twin figures.  John Studer,  Ron Lab and Tom Dreher scored 14 points apiece, while Rock VanFosse and Rick Hall tallied 10.  Stone Creek was almost equal to the occasion, placing 3 players in the double payoff.  Vic Turner led the way on 16 points, while John Flinner hit 12 and Jim Wherley 10.  Strasburg meshed 23 of 59 field shots for 39 percent and 18 of 26 foul tries.  Stone Creek was 23 for 45 for 44 percent from the floor and 16 of 22 from the foul line.  While the Tigers are idle tonight, Stone Creek will be playing Tuscarawas in a non-loop fray in New Philadelphia High's gymnasium.  The rolling Strasburg Reserves (10-3) closed down a strong Stone Creek Panther team (9-2) 43-32.

65 - Midvale Survives Personal Foul Night With Tusky 88-70 (1-29-65)

Tuscarawas High School (Broncos) Senior - Rich Eckhardt (20-Points)

MIDVALE - Like man, when the Midvale Blue Devils (6-1) (15-1) and Tuscarawas Broncos (1-5) (5-9) collided here last night, it made rock 'n roll look like a dark ages ritual.  Between the varsity and reserve contest a total of 111 personal fouls were whistled.  And the varsity tilt was varsity all the way.  It won the fiasco of the fouls with 59.  Midvale counted 28 and Tuscarawas 31.  All told, 8 players departed the feature attraction in the 4th quarter via the 5-foul route, 3 from Midvale and 5 from Tuscarawas.  Both coaches, Pete Hilliard of the Blue Devils and Charles Etling of the Broncos, thought it was some kind of a record, the kind neither desire to claim.  Suffice to say, both indicated they were pretty perturbed about the entire business.  The lone reward for this kind of game is foul shooting practice.  And Midvale, usually tough in this department needs it.  It cashed only 21 of 68 charity tosses for sub-par 31 percent.  Tuscarawas was 26 for 42 for 52 percent.  The personals detracted from a game that had promise of being close.  Midvale led only 32-22 at the conclusion  of the 1st stanza, before rocking the Broncos back on their heels by racing to a 55-35 halftime lead.  Dan Kohler set the scoring pace for the victors, firing in 30 points.  Terry Leggett was right behind with 25.  Four Broncos were in  double figures, Rich Eckhardt counting 20, Russ McGlothlin and Dave Paisley 16 apiece and Ray McWilliams 10.  From the field, Midvale harvested 29 of 65 for 45 percent.  Tuscarawas was 21 of 68 for 31 percent.  Tom Daniels led Midvale in the rebound department with 11.  Leggett grabbed 9 and Kohler 8.  Tops for Tuscarawas was McGlothlin with 16.  McWilliams had 6.  The Midvale Reserves (8-5) dominated the Tuscarawas Reserves (4-5) 55-32.

ZOARVILLE - Racing out of the starting gate to a 20-9 first period lead, Tuscarawas Valley (2-4) (3-10) never was headed in hanging up its victory over Baltic (0-6) (2-10).  The Trojans went on to record quarter margins of 36-26 and 53-38.  Four members of the victors hit the 2-figure column, Harold Swinford's 26 points leading the way.  Rounding out the quartet were Gary Adams with 14, Bob Burris 12 and Chuck Fishley 10.  Baltic, which travels to Port Washington tonight for a non-league encounter, was led by Keith Miller's 19 points.  Gus Regula followed with 12.  In a game featuring a pair of hot-shooting ball clubs, Tuscarawas Valley was the hottest.  It connected 24 times in 45 floor attempts for 53 percent, one of its best marks of the season.  The Trojans meshed 24 of 34 foul tries for 71 percent.  Baltic, only outgoaled by one, hit 23 of 55 for 42 percent.  It made 14 of 20 charity tosses for 70 percent.  The big difference in the score came at the foul lines.  Tuscarawas Valley was assessed 14 personals, while Baltic,  in battling the taller Trojans, was whistled 24 times.  The Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (3-8) netted the Baltic Reserves (3-6) 49-35.

STRASBURG - Hiland (13-3) gained a lot of prestige here last night via a victory over touted Strasburg (8-5).  The talented Hawks pushed their slate with the decision, far better than was expected at the outset of the season.  Both teams fought furiously, with Pete Shahan's Tigers holding 18-16 and 42-38 margins at the first 2 stops before Bob Schrock's Hawks tied the count 60-60 going into the deciding final frame.  Key to the win was Hiland's amazing shooting ability.  Strasburg also enjoyed a fabulous night shootingwise, canning 30 action attempts in 60 tries for a glittering 50 percent.  But, the Hawks went 11 points better, sinking 25 of 57 from the floor for a blistering 61 percent.  And they missed just 8 shots the entire 2nd half!  Most of their attempts came from around the key.  The packed house saw the game see-saw back and forth most of the night, the score changing hands 5 times in the 1st canto, 8 in the 2nd, 9 in the 3rd and 3 in the fourth.  Strasburg's best advantage was 32-26 and Hiland's best was 83-72.  Rock VanFossen, one of the most steady players in the county, gave Strasburg new life when he popped in a pair of fouls after the 3rd quarter buzzer sounded to knot the count.  Teammate Ron Lab put the Tigers 2 up in the final frame from the foul line, but Jim Edwards pulled Hiland even on a goal, Don Yutzy sank a 2-pointer and Art Miller and Ken Miller sank fouls before VanFossen countered twice on charities.  From then on it was mostly Hiland.  At the charity stripes, Hiland went 15 for 21 and Strasburg 17 for 32.  Rebounds favored Strasburg 42-40, with Rick Hall snaring 12, VanFossen 10 and John Studer 7.  Ken Miller grabbed 17 and John Hochstetler 10 for Hiland.  The Hawks committed 27 turnovers and the Tigers 15.  Ken Miller paced the Hawk scoring parade, notching 20 points.  Hochstetler mustered 19 and Yutzy 18.  High point-maker for Strasburg was VanFossen who garnered 22.  Studer and Tom Dreher both added 12 and Lab and Hall contributed 10 apiece.  Strasburg hosts Stone Creek Friday.  Hiland greets Garaway Saturday.  The Strasburg Reserves (9-3) blasted the Hiland Reserves 65-48.
