65 - Meet The 1964-65 Tuscarawas Broncos
Tuscarawas High School (Broncos): Hoping to gallop to a successful basketball season starting November 27 against Midvale, are the following: KNEELING - Dan Guspyt (left), George Summers, Ken Rankin, Phil Roudebush andRich Eckhardt. STANDING - Coach Charles Etling (left), Russ McGlothlin, Bill Smith, Dave Palsley and Gary Cerana.
TUSCARAWAS - "I feel this is a very strong Tuscarawas team." So says first-year Coach Charles Etling who takes over for interim boss Dick Donald. Tusky was 9-11 last year and have lost the following veterans:
Phil Caldwell (leading scorer)
Chuck Reichman
Russ Ashkettle
But, returning are several lads who could give the Broncos one of their best teams in recent years. Tuscarawas ;lhasn't had a really successful campaign since 1960-61 when it won 13 of 20 under first-year mentor Aaron Miller. The year before the Broncos were 12-8. The 1961-62 squad won 9 and lost 10 and the 1962-63 quintet broke even in 20 outings. Smooth ball handling is the key to the broncos' success at this time, plus plenty of speed.
Key player is Russ McGlothlin who has had trouble with injuries over the years. Still, the 6-2 Senior has seen enough service to win 2 letters and score 561 points, 166 coming as a Freshman and 210 last season. He is a Center. The only other monogram winner back is 6-0 Senior Rich Eckhardt, who will play Forward. He tallied 80 markers during 1963-64. Tallest man on the bronco squad is 6-5 Junior Bill Smith, a 250-pounder who will make a bid for the Center job. Others 6-0 or over are:
Senior Gary Cerana, 6-1 Forward
Senior Ken Rankin, 6-0 Forward
Junior Ray McWilliams, 6-2 Forward
Junior Tim Reed, 6-0 Forward
Sophomore Phil Roudebush, 6-0 Forward
Also seeking Varsity berths are:
Senior Dan Guspyt, 5-10 Guard
Junior Dave Palsley, 5-11 Forward
Junior Manny D'Ostroph, 5-10 Guard
Sophomore George Summer, 5-9 Guard
Sophomore Jim McCauley, 5-10 Guard
Three good Freshmen prospects are:
Earl Reed
Brenton Lehigh
Fred Raush
Etling, who came to Tuscarawas from Cadiz, is assisted by Gary Zollins. They plan to have the Broncos do a lot of pressing, figuring a tight defense is one of the best ways to win ball games. Tuscarawas begins regular season play November 27, hosting Midvale in a non-league encounter.
