65 - Midvale Defeats Gnaden 71-55 For 4th Straight Win (12-5-64)

MIDVALE - Breaking through Gnadenhutten's man-to-man full-court press in the 2nd period, Midvale High's Blue Devils (4-0) went on to record their 4th decision of the 1964-65 basketball campaign, defeating the Indians (0-4) here Saturday. The Blue Devils, who return to their home court Friday night for a crucial Tuscarawas County Class A League encounter with Stone Creek, round out this week's schedule Saturday night by traveling to Dennison. Gnadenhutten has a loop contest at Tuscarawas Valley Friday night and entertains Port Washington Saturday. Battling on even terms the 1st stanza, both the Devils and Indians employed full-court presses. Gnaden used a man-to-man press and Midvale a zone press. At the end of the 1st quarter Midvale was on top by a narrow 13-12 margin. But, the Blue Devils broke the game wide open in the 2nd, rolling to a 41-29 halftime lead. Dan Kohler and Bob Carlisle set the pace for the hosts, netting 27 and 19 points, respectively. Bill Kohl scored 11 markers and Gene Bates 10 for Gnadenhutten. Midvale connected on 40 percent of its field tries and had a decisive edge on the boards, out-rebounding the Indians 46-33. Leading the Devil board work was Kohler with 17 and Carlisle with 12. Kohl pulled down 12 rebounds for Gnadenhutten. The Indians meshed only 32 percent of its field shots. In the free-throw department, Midvale hit 21 of 32 and Gnaden 19 of 28. The Midvale Reserves (1-1) edged the Gnadenhutten Reserves (1-3), 38-37.
