65 - Garaway Slams Gnadenhutten 75-43 (11-28-64)
Gnadenhutten High School (Indians) Senior - Terry Huebner (13 Points)
GNADENHUTTEN - Look out Garaway High (1-0) foes. Garaway's well-drilled basketballers opened the new season in grand style here Saturday breezing to a victory over an outclassed Gnadenhutten quintet (0-2). The Pirates, pulling out all stops and handling the ball in mid-season form, drilled 29 action shots through the hoops in 62 tries for a great opening-night percentage of 46. And their tight defense limited the Indians to a mere 14 connections in 75 attempts for a miserable 18 percent. Dan Andreas paced the Glenn Bower-coached Bucs in scoring, potting 12 fielders and 5 fouls for 29 points, the best individual performance in the county thus far. He had ample support from Terry Gerber with 12 tallies and Randy Miller who got 11. High for Oren Thompson's Indians was Terry Huebner who meshed 13 markers. Garaway used a full court press most of the night and when on the attack went through the Gnadenhutten defense at will. The Pirates spurted to an 18-8 margin at the initial rest, increased this to 44-25 by intermission and doubled the Indians' output, 60-30, after 3 quarters. Garaway dominated board work, also, pulling down 40 rebounds to only 19 for Gnadenhutten. Andreas was the big man in this department too, snaring 19 rebounds. Miller plucked off 7. In contrast, high for Gnadenhutten was Huebner who grabbed 4. The Pirates lost none via the foul route, but Indians Gene Bates and John Parrish both left the game in the final frame. "Bower's Bombers" return to action Friday, traveling to Zoarville to take on highly-regarded Tuscarawas Valley in a Tuscarawas County League battle. It will be the Trojans' 1st appearance of the campaign. Gnadenhutten hosts StoneCreek Friday in another loop test. The Garaway Reserves (1-0) started the night off by burying the Gnadenhutten Reserves (1-1) 42-27.
