Port Washington High School (Purple Riders) Basketball Head Coach - Donald E. Durham. (Wilmington High School - 1952 - US Army 1956 - Ashland College 1960) 21-43
The Don Durham Basketball Program appeared to be on track after last season's 11-10 record (the best Port winning season since Jim Pfeiffer's team in 1956-57 when they were 13-9). This year Port would lose 6 Seniors, but gain 4 including one letterman and 3 others who stood at 6-foot or better. Ken Gay, the only letterman, scored 202 points last year and would lead the team this year with 286. There was no reason to think that this team couldn't improve on the 1962-63 season.
Port Washington started the season off by losing to Stone Creek 40-25. The Stone Creek Panthers have always been an automatic win for Port ever since the 1958-59 season. The Purple Riders had won 8 straight since that time (An omen for the season to come?) The 2nd game was also a loss, this time against the Gnadenhutten Indians 45-38. Port's first win would come in their 3rd game against the Malvern Green Hornets 65-39. Malvern returned the favor later in the season with a 67-44 decision. The team moved on to end the entire season at 5-13. Port Washington was right back to where the program was in Durham's very 1st season. The team would look again to yet another rebuilding of the proram in 1964-65.
HIGHPOINT - Ken Gay made All-County as a result of the County Basketball coaches voting system. And, Leonard Cameron emerges as a future Purple Rider rising star.
