MIDVALE - A tremendous desire to win and a sharp eye. Put those ingredients together and you have the reason Midvale (9-0) still is riding the creast of an unbeaten string today. The battling Blue Devils trailed Harrison County power-house Conotton Valley (7-1) by 2 points with 2 seconds left in an extra period here last night, but managed to pull out a victory before a packed house. Down 66-64, the Blue Devils of Coach Pete Hilliard appeared headed to their first loss after conquering 8 foes. And 6-0 Sophomore Bob Carlisle faced a jump ball situation with 6-3 Rocket Jim Sell under the Blue Devil basket. Carlisle really went high, tipping the ball to teammate Dan Kohler and the sharpeyed Blue Devil wheeled and popped the ball through the nets to tie the count as the buzzer sounded. The Blue Devils got another chance as the officials called a Rocket for fouling Kohler. Again the Blue Devil ace proved his status in the clutch, spliting the nets to give Midvale the win. Conotton Valley, falling for the 1st time! The Rockets battled gamely against the pressing Blue Devils, but trailed 13-11, 33-30 and 48-43 at the quarter stops. Rocket Neil Tope hit both ends of a one-and-one situation with 2 seconds left in regulation time to knot the score. Kohler took game scoring honors with 24 points and now has 198 fro the season. Carlisle and Tom Daniels both got 10. High for the Rockets of Coach Errol Jacobs was Greg Kurtz with 23. Tope, Ken Beamer and John Connor all meshed 13. Midvale visits Hopedale January 2. Conotton Valley treks to Freeport January 8 to meet Lakeland. In the Reserve game, Conotton Valley out produced Midvale (4-3) 41-34.
