DOVER - Superior rebounding strength enabled Tuscarawas Valley (4-10) to defeat Dover St. Joseph's (4-11) Saturday night before about 1,000 fans in Dover High Gymnasium. Neither team as sharp, several turnovers keeping the score low until the final frame when the tempo picked up. The count was 5-5 at 4:47 of the initial quarter at which time Ken Gold's Trojans spurted for 10 consecutive points to jump out in front 15-7. TV stayed on top the rest of the way, although the Art Teynor-coached Ramblers pulled close, 19-18, mid-way in the 2nd stanza and trailed just 27-21 at the half. The Trojans pulled further ahead in the 3rd canto and never were threatened again. St. Joseph's was in personal foul trouble the entire contest and ended up with 4 players forced to the bench after accumulating 5 each. The Ramblers' top pointmaker, Denny Capozella, and No. 2 man Mickey McCracken both were saddled with 4 before intermission and left the floor in the last period as did John Capozella. Jeff Lammers departed in the third. McCracken ended up as the Ramblers' leading scorer, netting 17 points. Larry Smith hustled for 15, Denny Capozella got 12 and John Capozella 10. Ten of Denny's came in the final 8 minutes. Harold Swinford paced the Trojan attack, potting 20 points, Fred Clugston netted 16, Bob Burris 13, Cuck Fishley 12 and Gary Adams 11. Burris controlled both boards, grabbing 16 rebounds. St. Joseph's, which had won 2 in a row, will host West Holmes Friday. Tusky Valley will greet Tuscarawas Tuesday.
Burris broke the scoring ice at 7:48 from the foul line after being fouled by Lammers as he tried to drive along the baseline. Smith connected from the side of the key at 6:32, but Swinford countered from the corner. John Capozella sank a charity toss to tie the count 3-3. Swinford potted a pair of fouls and John Capozella fired through a deuce to make it 5-5. The Trojans took turns scoring, mostly from the charity strip, to take a 15-5 advantage before McCracken scored a goal with 31 seconds left in the period. With the count 19-13, the Trojans ahead, in the 2nd stanza, McCracken sank a pair of fouls, Roln Rieger drilled home a goal and Smith hit at the charity line to cut the deficit to 19-18. But, the Trojans came right back, going to a 24-18 margin on a balanced attack once again. St. Joseph's pulled to within 24-21, but Adams hit from out front and Fisley from the foul line before the half to make it 27-21. Four more points at the outset of the third canto gave the Trojans a 31-27 advantage and the game was all but over. In the Reserve game, Tuscarawas Valley (4-8) outdistanced Dover St. Joseph's 41-34.
