67 - Down The Line With Ed Smith

DOVER - Midvale's 39 years of athletic participation comes to an end at the conclusion of this year's spring schedules.  It has produced many good teams and standout players which it can be justly proud.  The long string of mementos will long be remembered.  Neither will Wednesday night's banquet be forgotten real soon.  Anyone not attending missed something worth seeing.  Those in attendance couldn't help but feel he was part of a very proud community.  Those people revealed how proud they were of Blue Devil athletics and they have good reason.

It all started back in 1928 when Midvale's 1st basketball team lost to Baltic 54-5 in its 1st taste of competition and this was followed with a 96-4 blasting by Mineral City.  (and don't forget, those were the days of low scoring games, too).  It was right then and there that Midvale fans and players decided this couldn't go on.  Three years later they won their 1st county tournament and from then on, Midvale has always been one of the teams to reckon with.  Since the humiliations in '28, the name Midvale has been carved on 15 league champion or co-championships, runners-up 5 times, county tournament winners 10 times and runner-up 7.  Blue Devil quintets have copped the Sectional on 23 occasions and the District 13.  Also they have reached the State tournament level with 7 different aggregations.  In football, county titles came their way in 1951 and 1964 and they have been Tuscarawas Valley Conference kings in '56, '59 and '64 and runner-up in '61.  Many awards have been captured in track and baseball also.  A sprinkling of record holders are still from the Midvale power-houses.  The year of 1956-57 is one of their outstanding successful ones as the 'Devils were champs in football, basketball, track and consolation winners in baseball.  How's that for a monoply?

A quick review of things to remember were summarized by Coach Burt Beaber in a booklet he formed for the Adult Booster Club:

During the war years when the janitor took a turn at coaching; the popular 'Red' White still talks of this experience.

When Jesse White, in 1931, scored a beautiful hook shot for his opponent.  This was the exact margin of victory for Dennison.

Lightning Sam Booth and his track explolts.

Dick Leggett's last second baskets in the 1957 Regionals against Vienna and Savannah.

During the 1966 Sectional, Dan Fox stopping long enough to retrieve his bubble gum which had fallen on the floor.

Frank Baumholtz' 3 game total of 57 points in State tourney.

Dean DeMattio's 1172 points, best in school history.

Bill Housel scoring 10 points in the 1959 State track meet.

In 1940 when Midvale played football games on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons.

Dean DeMattio made All-Ohio and Honorable Mention and All-American in 1964 and Jack Ford made it in 1949.

Don't forget the final coaching staff consisting of Pete Hilliard, Oren Thompson, Burt Beaver and Keith Pretorius and last but not least...Hilliard's thread-bare light blue suit.

67 - Gnaden's Pitcher Bill Kohl Shuts-Down Powhatan Point 2-0 (5-10-67)

Bill Kohl cranks up strong left arm that has carried his team into Regional baseball play with 3 consecutive 2-hitters and yesterday's 3-hitter over Powhatan Point.

GNADENHUTTEN - An advantage of 3 wild pitches in the 1st inning was all the Indians needed to advance to the Regional Baseball Tournament at Canton May 19-20.  Gnadenhutten (7-1), behind the 3-hit pitching of ace Bill Kohl (5-0), took District honors yesterday by holding Powhatan Point scoreless.  Kohl with 3 consecutive 2-hitters to his credit prior to yesterday's contest, tangled with John Lysien in a tight pitcher's duel, as Lysien allowed only 2 hits.

The Indians took advantage of Lysien's wildness right from the start, when Steve Moore led off with a single (10) and rounded the bases on the wild pitches to give Gnadenhutten its 1-0 lead.  Dan Jinks, the Indians' outstanding catcher, started the 8th inning with a single (2) for the only other hit given up by Lysien.  Jinks went to 2nd on Mike Kail's sacrifice and when Lysien attempted to pick him off, the ball went into center field and Jinks was safe on 3rd base.  Wayne Martin grounded out, permitting the run to come in.  Denny Brown collected 2 singles off Kohl and Dennis Cook got the other.  Brown's safeties came in the 2nd and 7th innings, while Cook connected in the fifth.  Kohl walked only 2 batters, while striking out 9, in picking up his 4th decision in tournament action.  Lysien struck out 10 and gave  up 4 bases on balls.  The Indians were charged with a single miscue, while Powhatan Point had two.

67 - Scheduling Conflict Delays Gnaden-Powhatan Game

GNADENHUTTEN - The Class A District Tournament baseball contest between Gnadenhutten and Powhatan originally scheduled Tuesday has been re-scheduled for Wednesday at 2PM.  Tournament manager John Zion announced the conflict of dates came from the Bridgeport Tournament.  Gnaden Head Coach Ted Martin stated, "The Powhatan club looks real good.  They have fine pitching and are expected to start John Lyson a big lefty who can really throw that ball."  Coach Martin announced he will send Bill Kohl, also a strong southpaw, to the mound.  Kohl (4-0) has tossed 3 consecutive 2-hitters so far in tournament play.  The winner of the single game District play-off advances to North Canton Hoover Class A Regionals on May 19 and 20.

67 - The 1967 Sectional Tournament Baseball Champions - Gnadenhutten Indians (5-4-67)

A happy Tribe of Gnadenhutten Indians whoop it up and rally around ace pitcher Bill Kohl and catcher Dan Jinks after laying claim to the Sectional Class A Baseball title.

GNADENHUTTEN - Bill Kohl (4-0) turned in his 3rd consecutive 2-hitter in Class A Sectional Tournament play yesterday as the Indians (3-0) (6-1) blanked Hiland (2-1) 2-0 to advance to District action here Wednesday against today's winner in the Bridgeport Sectional.  Kohl's mound performance was brilliant.  The left-hander recorded 15 strikeouts, getting 9 of the first 11 batters to face him.  He allowed only 2 men to reach base via the walk route.  Hits were given to Galen Swartzentruber, who beat out a single and Ronnie Troyer, who connected for a double in the final inning.  In his 3 appearances, Kohl has posted 2 shut-out victories, striking out 39 batters, while walking only 7.

Hiland's Freshman fireballer, Ronnie Keim, who picked up 2 wins before tangling with the Indians, also turned in an exceptional performance, allowing only 5 hits, but 3 were for extra bases.  He fanned 4 batters and gave up a pair of walks.  The big blows by the Indians came in the 4th inning when Mike Kail sent the ball 320 feet over left center field for a Home Run (1).  Kohl then got on with a single (2) and scored on Ken Huprich's double (2).  Steve Moore's double (3) and a single (9) were the only other Indian hits.  Gnaden's only other scoring threat came in the 3rd inning when Darrell Laughlin tried to score on a fly ball hit by Dan Jinks, but was thrown out by Martin Troyer.

Head Coach Ted Martin praised the efforts by Kohl, saying, "He seems to have a future in baseball especially if he keeps playing as he has."  Martin added that the team has a fine catcher in Jinks, who has good reactions for as fast as Kohl is.  The coach added that the team had "hit the ball well today, quite a few were taking good cuts."  He said he was pleased with the team performance, adding "Their fielding had been good."

67 - Gnaden Kicks-Out Strasburg 3-0 (5-1-67)

Yesterday's action in Class A Sectional Baseball catches Gnaden's Wayne Martin rounding 3rd and heading for home as his team blanked the Strasburg Tigers.  Third baseman Art (Butch) Haswell makes sure Martin touches third.

GNADENHUTTEN - The finals of the Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament will feature Gnadenhutten (2-0) (5-1) against the Hiland Hawks (2-0).  The winner of the contest Wednesday at 3:30PM will advance to District action here on May 9th.  Both teams picked up victories yesterday on 2-hit pitching performances.  Gnadenhutten bested Strasburg 3-0 as Bill Kohl (3-0) gave up singles to Ed Yackey and Charlie Jones, while the Hawks blasted Port Washington 10-2 with Ronnie Keim allowing only a triple and a single.

Gnaden lead off in the 1st inning with Steve Moore banging a double (2) and later scoring on Wayne Martin's single (5).  It was Martin's 1st of 3 hits in the contest.  In the 5th, Moore again led off, getting his second hit, a single (7).  He advanced to 3rd on a sacrifice by Dan Jinks and a long fly to center by Mike Kail.  Moore scored when Gene Bayer (1-1) was charge with a wild pitch.  The final run came in the 6th off reliefer John Studer (1-1) when Ken Huprich doubled (1) and scored on Darrell Laughlin's 2nd single (4).

Strasburg (1-1) (4-2) made only 1 serious threat in the game.  Mike Donohue led off in the 5th with a walk and Yackey connected for the Tigers' 1st hit, to put 2 men on with none out.  Kohl got out of the inning with a forceout and 2 strikeouts.  Jones led off the 6th with his hit (4), but was left stranded as Kohl retired the next 3 batters.  Strasburg sent 11 men to the plate before getting one on base.  Gene Welling worked Kohl for a 2-out walk in the fourth.  Donohue's pass in the 5th was the only other base on balls issued by Kohl, who recorded 10 strikeouts.  Bayer pitched 5 innings in absorbing the loss.  He gave up 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk, while fanning five.  Studer was charged with one run on 3 hits and he struck out four.

67 - Hiland Slams Port Washington 10-2 (5-1-67)

GNADENHUTTEN - Five Purple Riders miscues and a 3-run Home Run for Rich Clark aided the Hiland Hawks (2-0) in its victory.  The Hawks drew 1st blood, scoring 2 unearned runs in the 1st inning and coming back with 4-run barrages in the 3rd and final frames.  Martin Troyer's single in the 3rd started Hiland's rally.  He scored after Joe Wengerd doubled and Greg Bender, Purple Riders hurler, was charged with a wild pitch.  Galen Swartzentruber then singled to score Wengard and Carl Swartzentruber blasted a triple, sending Galen home.  Carl then scored when Jeff Ling grounded out.

Two errors and Clark's homer provided the 4 runs in the 7th to cap the Hawks scoring attack.  Ronnie  Keim who recorded a win over Malvern last week, struck out 9, while walking 3.  The Freshman fireballer gave up a triple to Bender (1) in the 4th inning and a single to Jerry Stephens (2) in the final frame.  Bender (2-1) picked up his 1st loss of the season, yielding 6 hits and striking out 4 before being relieved after 2 innings by Jeff Huston.  The latter pitched hitless ball until Clark's blast.  He fanned 4 and issued a lone walk.  Port Washington now stands at (2-1) (4-2) in tournament and league play.

67 - Gnaden Trips Scio 5-2 (4-27-67)

GNADENHUTTEN - The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (4-1) behind the 2-hit pitching of Bill Kohl (3-0), advanced to the Class A Sectional semi-finals yesterday.  Kohl recorded 14 strikeouts in the Indians' verdict over Scio (1-1).  It was a battle of the southpaws in the nightcap with Kohl outlasting Scio's Paul Baker, who had tossed a one-hitter against Midvale on Tuesday night.  The Indians struck first, scoring 2 runs in  the 2nd frame when Ken Huprich walked, Don Finnicum was safe on an error  by Rich Downs and Danell Laughlin was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Steve Moore coming to bat.  He hit a sacrifice fly to score Huprich and Dan Jinks popped a single (1) to send Finnicum home.  Scio tied the score in the 4th when Randy Snyder singled for the 1st hit off Kohl, who had struck out 9 of the first 11 batters.  Skip Haffner forced Snyder, but walks to Eddie Edwards and Jim Allensworth loaded the bases.  Rick Downs then cracked a single to drive in the tying runs.

Mike Kail slammed a double (1) in Gnaden's half of the 5th and a wild pitch, a hit batsman and an error by Downs gave the Indians another 2-run lead.  The insurance run came in the 6th when a catcher-interference call, an error and a single by Moore (6) were recorded.  Baker fanned 8, walked 3 and yielded 5 hits in the 5 innings he worked.  He was relieved by Downs.  Kohl passed 3 batters.  Moore led the Indians' hitting with 2 hits (7) and 2 runs batted in.  Downs had 2 runs batted in for the Panthers.

67 - Hiland Blasts Malvern 10-5 (4-27-67)

SUGARCREEK - Hiland's Hawks (1-0) soared into the Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament yesterday on the strength of heavy artillery provided by Carl and Galen Swartzentruber.  The 2 heavy hitters bombed the Malvern Green Hornets (1-1) right out of tournamnt play by blasting 5 of the Hawks' 7 hits in pacing the victory on Garaway Field.  The win  moves Hiland into semi-final play at Gnadenhutten Monday against Port Washington (1-0).Included in the Swartzentrubers' performances were a 1st Inning Home Run and a 7th inning double by Galen and a 6th inning double by Carl, along with additional singles for each.  Al Hershberger also clubbed a 2-bagger for the winners.  Another thorn in Malvern's side was the pitching of Ronnie Keim, a fireballing Freshman who didn't allow the Hornets a hit until shortstop Dave Early slapped a grounder past 2nd in the 7th and last frame.

Keim gave up 8 of 11 walks in the last 2 innings.  He struck out 11, mostly with a hopping fast ball.  Errors played a major part in scoring as the Hornets tallied 1 run in  the 6th without a hit and Hiland had a total of 3 unearned runs.  Malvern came to life in the 7th as Key Munroe walked and Early came through with his single to right.  Keim walked 3 straight and Frank Clark cleaned the sacks with the final hit given by the tiring pitcher.  But Keim regained his poise long enought to end the contest with 2 strikeouts.  Starting Hornet hurler Bill Munroe took the loss as he gave up 7 runs and 6 hits, while striking out 5 and walking two.  Lefhander Jim Yockey relieved Munroe in the 6th with 2 on and finished the game.  He was charged with 4 runs, 2 unearned, while striking out 4.
