67 - Strasburg Drops Conotton Valley 12-3 (4-25-67))

SUGARCREEK - Opening action in yesterday's Sectional Class A Baseball Tournament here provided a slugfest as Strasburg (1-0) (3-0) recorded a 9-run victory over Conotton Valley (0-1).  Strasburg coasted to victory on 7-hit pitching by Gene Bayer (1-0) and Tom Ferris (1-0) who gave up a barrage of extra base blows...3 doubles and a triple.  The Tigers, scoring in every inning but the 6th, hammered the tosses of Conotton hurler Jeff Hunt for 4 runs in the 1st ining.  The attack was highlighted by back-to-back triples by John Studer (1) and Mike Donahue (1).  Bayer punched another 3-bagger (1) in the 4th to give himself a more comfortable cushion before giving way to Ferris in the fifth.  Other extra base blows, all doubles, came off the bats of Charlies Jones (2), Gary Feller (3) and Tom Margo (1).

Conotton's 1st baseman John Stocker and outfielder Wayne Burnsworth set the pace for the losers with 2 hits each.  But the 2 Tiger pitchers kept things under control by fanning nine.  Several strikeouts, squashed scoring threats by the Rockets.  Conotton's Hunt was shelled for 7 runs the first 2 innings and gave way to Gary Palmer, who finished the contest.  The Tigers pecked away for 2 runs in the 3rd, one in the 4th and 2 in the fifth.
