67 - Huggins-Newlon To Coach North All-Star Team

Charles Huggins of the Strasburg Tigers was selected to co-coach the North All-Star Team.

Ken Newlon of the Canton Lincoln Lions was selected to co-coach the North All-Star Team

COLUMBUS - Charles Huggins and Ken Newlon, who earned their Varsity coaching spurs at Stone Creek, yesterday were selected to coach the North team in the Annual North-South All-Star basketball game at Marion on June 24th.  Huggins tutored Stone Creek teams 2 years prior to advancing to Strasburg,  which he leads into today's State Class A semifinals against Ross County's Southeastern.  Newlon preceded Huggins at Stone Creek by several years.  After a successful stint he, too, was employed at Strasburg where his team reached the Regional finals twice.  For the past 10 years Newlon has coached at Canton Lincoln, a team that meets Columbus Linden-McKinley in tonight's State Class AA semifinals.  Decision to proceed with the all-star contest was made by the board of directors of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association.

The board, in addition to naming Newlon and Huggins to coach the North team, also picked Tom Bryant of Colerain and Bill Whaley of Alexander (Athens County) to lead the South squad.  Rosters for the 2 clubs will be picked early next month in District balloting.  The association's board of directors heard a report from President Lee Himmeger of Ayersville Thursday night that there was still some doubt the classic would be played.  Awaited is a decision by the board of control of the Ohio High School Athletic Association as to whether it will sanction the contest.  Himmeger said that he had been told by Paul Landis, OHSAA commissioner, that a referendum of high school principals on whether they favored the game was still being conducted.

At a February meeting, the board of control split 3-3 on whether to sanction the game and decided to take an opinion poll of the principals.  If the result is favorable, the board will then vote on the issue again, presumably to give official sanction.  Himmeger said Landis reported that as of last Monday, 376 had voted in favor of the game and 343 against.  The final count is expected to be announced at the board's mid-April meeting.
