67 - Gnaden Kicks-Out Strasburg 3-0 (5-1-67)

Yesterday's action in Class A Sectional Baseball catches Gnaden's Wayne Martin rounding 3rd and heading for home as his team blanked the Strasburg Tigers.  Third baseman Art (Butch) Haswell makes sure Martin touches third.

GNADENHUTTEN - The finals of the Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament will feature Gnadenhutten (2-0) (5-1) against the Hiland Hawks (2-0).  The winner of the contest Wednesday at 3:30PM will advance to District action here on May 9th.  Both teams picked up victories yesterday on 2-hit pitching performances.  Gnadenhutten bested Strasburg 3-0 as Bill Kohl (3-0) gave up singles to Ed Yackey and Charlie Jones, while the Hawks blasted Port Washington 10-2 with Ronnie Keim allowing only a triple and a single.

Gnaden lead off in the 1st inning with Steve Moore banging a double (2) and later scoring on Wayne Martin's single (5).  It was Martin's 1st of 3 hits in the contest.  In the 5th, Moore again led off, getting his second hit, a single (7).  He advanced to 3rd on a sacrifice by Dan Jinks and a long fly to center by Mike Kail.  Moore scored when Gene Bayer (1-1) was charge with a wild pitch.  The final run came in the 6th off reliefer John Studer (1-1) when Ken Huprich doubled (1) and scored on Darrell Laughlin's 2nd single (4).

Strasburg (1-1) (4-2) made only 1 serious threat in the game.  Mike Donohue led off in the 5th with a walk and Yackey connected for the Tigers' 1st hit, to put 2 men on with none out.  Kohl got out of the inning with a forceout and 2 strikeouts.  Jones led off the 6th with his hit (4), but was left stranded as Kohl retired the next 3 batters.  Strasburg sent 11 men to the plate before getting one on base.  Gene Welling worked Kohl for a 2-out walk in the fourth.  Donohue's pass in the 5th was the only other base on balls issued by Kohl, who recorded 10 strikeouts.  Bayer pitched 5 innings in absorbing the loss.  He gave up 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk, while fanning five.  Studer was charged with one run on 3 hits and he struck out four.
