SUGARCREEK - Strasburg Tigers (1-0) enjoyed a combination of 4 hit pitching, a barrage of extra base hits and Garaway errors as they bombed the Pirates (0-3) in their season opener on the Garaway field. The below-par weather forced a parade of pitchers to the mound for both squads. Righthander Tom Ferris (1-0) started for the Tigers and received credit for the win. Ferris appeared not to last the 1st inning. After walking the 1st two batters and Errol Miller bunting safely to load the sacks, the little curveballer shook off the chilly weather and then wiffed the next 3 batters. John Studer went to the mound in the 4th followed by Jim Limbacher and Freshman southpaw Tom Newton in the sixth. The combined efforts limited thePirates to single base blows by Ken Snyder (1), Larry Harding (1), Errol Miller (1) and Blake Angel (1).
Garaway starting pitcher Bob Faver (0-2), took the loss as Strasburg tallied 5 runs in the 3rd inning on 3 hits, 3 walks and 2 miscues that brought the call for Tim Miller (0-1) in relief. Tim was followd by Errol Miller (0-0) in the seventh. Tiger coach Pete Angelo was elated over the big noise from the victors' bats, especially for being the 1st time outside this spring. Leading the timely hitting of the Bengals were 2nd baseman Charlie Jones who collect 2 singles (2) and a double (1). Studer had 3 singles (3) and Gary Feller a pair of 2 baggers (2). Others in the slug parade were catcher Mike Donahue with 2 hits (2) and Bob Welling who in addition to a liner to left (1), blasted a 380 foot monster Home Run (1) over the left field fence.
