COLUMBUS - Strasburg High School Tigers (25-0) will make its 1st State Tournament bid since 1938 Friday afternoon at 1:30PM in Ohio State University's St. John Arena when it tangles with Southeastern of Ross County (21-4).  Winner of the game will advance to Saturday afternoon's championship, scheduled to begin at 2PM.  The ton of muscle from Tigertown will lock horns with a veteran combination.  Six of the first 8 Panthers are returning lettermen who galloped into the "final 4" after downing previously undefeated and top ranked Ames-Bern 62-47 in Regional finals at Columbus Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

As a result Southeastern advanced to the State finals for the 2nd consecutive year.  Last year the Panthers bowed to Rossford in the semis.  Southeastern, which seemed to grow stronger as the season progressed, recovered a lot of lost ground after losing 4 of its first 10 regular season games.  It came on strong at mid-season and finished with a 14-4 mark.  Near the end of the campaign the Panthers started to avenge the early season losses.  They dumped Chillicothe Biship Flaget by 17 points after suffering an earlier season loss by 6.  In Sectional play the Panthers whipped Western by 19 points, a team that had beaten them by 19 during the season.  But, the best was the last, as Ames-Bern had downed Southeastern by 2 in  the season lidlifter.

Other conquests have come at the expense of Eastern 61-59 and 47-43, Zane Trace (a team that bowed 74-29 to Strasburg), 82-53 and 101-56, Adena 83-59 and 83-53, Paint Valley 67-60 and 95-63, Unioto 50-41 and 96-60, Logan 73-65, Westfall 63-52, Chillicothe Flaget 96-81 and Huntington 89-63.  The defeats were dealt by Ames-Bern 61-59, Chillicothe Flaget 54-48, Western 68-49 and Huntington 77-74 in overtime.  In tournament warfare the Panthers have waded through such opposition as Eastern 69-44, Huntington 78-41 and Western 81-60 to complete Sectional tilts.  In the District, the Panthers pawed Ironton St. Joseph 75-45 and Portsmouth Clay 63-52.  Previous to knocking the undefeated Ames-Bern out of the Regional Tournament, the Panthers clobbered Canal Winchester 81-46.

For the season, Southeastern has racked up a total of 1745 markers for a 75.8 game average.  On the defensive side their opponents have totaled 1191 markers for a 50.8 overall average.  The Ross County runners boast a balanced thrust with all 5 starters averaging double figures.  Pacing the Panther attack is forward Doug Hill, a 5-11 Junior who averages 18 points per contest with approximately all of them being tossed in from beyond the key.  The other forward slot is filled by Dan (Jakie) Jordan, 6-2 Senior who averages 16 markers.  Most of them were tallied after pulling in rebounds.

Captain Roger Skaggs played center last year, but has been shifted to guard and apparently it is to his liking.  Skaggs carries a 13-point output and his 6-3 frame adds boardwork strength.  Senior Mike Miller, 6-2 defensive specialist, usually draws the top defensive assignment.  He also carries a 10 point average.  Miller has turned in excellent performances during the tournaments.  Rounding out the starting lineup for the Panthers is 5-9 Junior Ray Thackett a consistent performer with another 10 point average.  Arlie Howard a 5-11 Senior and Ronnie Bianton, 6-3 Junior are 1st line replacements and have the ability to serve in any position.  Head Coach Dave Augsburger, a 26-year old frank, but polite young man, makes no bones about having confidence in his prancing Panthers.  "We like to run and shoot if we can find the opportunity," says Augsburger.  "All  of my boys are good shooters from the outside.  I was sure we could make it to Columbus."

The young mentor spoke highly of his dribbling specialist, Doug Hill.  "He can take charge of a game at any key point and usually comes through when the money is on the table."  The Panthers favor a zone defense, but do not hesitate to shift to their shuffling man-for-man, as all indicatons point to a quick adjusting combination.
