67 - On The Diamond - Strasburg Tigers
STRASBURG - Head Coach Pete Angelo announced 7 lettermen answered the call to baseball practice this week. Angelo stated, "Due to the elongated basketball season we are off to a late start." Two year veterans, John Studer at 1st base, Charlie Jones at 2nd and Gary Feller at short provide the infield experience. Ed Yackey will be the lone outfield returnee due to the loss of Mike Reiger who cannot participate this year because of illness. Other outfield candidates are Tom Margo, Bob Welling, and Tom Ferris, when he's not on the mound. "We will be hurting for pitching," says Angelo, "Gene Bayer, our leading hurler will not be ready for awhile due to minor surgery."
Mike Donahue is the possible starting catcher; although, receiving competition from Paul Samsa and Sophomore Art (Butch) Haswell will get the nod at 3rd base. Other candidates fighting for berths are pitchers Jim Limbacher, Rich Garber and Tom Newton. Infield prospects are Bill Ferris, Mike Patton, George Baker and Ken Dreher, while the outfield aspirants are John Bott, Tim Kaltenbaugh, Rick Margo and Dennis Paustenbach. The Tigers have a 15 game slate beginning Tuesday at Garaway.
