COLUMBUS - Strasburg's John Studer, the most prolific single season scorer in Tuscarawas County history, today won accolades as the Class A Ohio High School Basketball Player of the Year. The 6-3 Senior was the only repeater on The Assocated Press All-State Team selected by a panel of sportswriters and sportscasters. Joining Studer on the 7-man 1st team was Dennison St. Mary's 6-8 pivotman Tom Crosswhite, who led Tuscarawas County in regular season scoring. Studer, who has led Strasburg to a 25-0 record and into this week's State semifinals, has shattered both the school career and county single season scoring records.
He averaged 27.1 points during the regular season and enters the State event with 665 for the 1966-67 campaign. It tops the previous county record of 641 points, established by New Philadelphia's Dave Leggett in the early 1950's. Studer's current 3-season total stands at 1546 points, far beyond Strasburg's previous record of 1117, set by John Peters and broken by the Tiger star early this season. A member of the school band, where he plays the tuba good enough to earn a music scholarship if he wanted, Studer was a kicking specialist on the football team. He changed uniforms at halftime to handle both assignments.
Crosswhite averaged 27.9 points during the regular campaign and before St. Mary's bowed from the District tournament accumulated 628. In 3 years of Varsity competition for the Blue Waves he poured in 1473 points through the nets although only a Junior, he will be ineligible next season due to age.
