67 - Port Washington Blanks Tusky 4-0 (4-25-67)









GNADENHUTTEN - The Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament at Gnaden opened with the Port Washington Purple Riders (1-0) (3-1) shutting out the Tuscarawas Broncos (0-1) (1-3).  Greg Bender (2-0) tossed a 2-hitter for the Riders.  Both hits given up by Bender were singles.  Terry Willison popped one (1) to lead off in the 1st inning and Phil Simmons connected (3) in the fifth.  In picking up his 2nd victory of the season, Bender recorded 9 strikeouts, while issuing only 2 walks to the Broncos.  Phil Johnson (0-2), who started for the Broncos, was charged with the defeat.  He was aided by Art (Butch) Reed (0-0).  They granted 7 hits and 2 walks, while fanning five.  The Purple Riders' attack was led by Jeff Huston, who collected a double (2) and a single (2) and Phil Steinbach,  who had a pair of singles (2).  Steinbach and Bob Porter each drove in 2 runs.

Port Washington scored 2 runs in the 4th when 2 catcher-interference calls were made.  The Broncos turned in a double play in the 1st inning.  Each team was charged with a miscue.
