Ron Bradley and Charles Stingel, ace right-handers for Gnadenhutten (4-0) and Garaway High (3-1), respectively, in the Tuscarawas County Baseball League, hooked up for an old fashioned mound duel yesterday on the Indians' diamond. Bradley won out as his team copped a 5-3 verdict ending the Garaway three game winning streak. He whiffed 14, walked two and was touched for six hits. Singel was equally effective as he set down 15 Gnaden batters on strikes, walked four and yielded only four hits. Gnaden struck for two runs in the third and added three more in the fourth to clinch the contest. Ron Clark had two singles to lead the way. Bud Yakley and Korsa Zehnder blasted a triple and double, respectively, for Garaway as the Pirates scored two runs in the fifth and added their final tally in the 6th.

Thomas A. Davies, coach and Foreign Language instructor at Willoughby Junior High School, has resigned his post there to accept the head basketball coaching job at Port Washington. A native of Pittsburgh, and a Waynesburg College graduate, Davies will teach Foreign Languages and English at Port Washington in addition to handling the cage coaching job. While at Waynesburg, he was a member of the varsity basketball team for three years. He had been connected with the Willoughby school system for three years.

59 - Right Down The Line (6-4-58)

With last week's resignation of Ed McGlumphy from the Strasburg High basketball post, there are now four coaching vacancies in Tuscarawas County to be filled before the next school term. Jack Beliville resigned his post at Baltic for advanced study at Ohio State University, but his brother, Tom, who coached the reserve basketball team last season, is expected to step up to the head post. He also is principal of the school. McGlumphy also is responsible for an opening at Stone Creek, the county's smallest school. He resigned at Stone Creek a month ago to accept the head spot at Strasburg. The other post open within the county is at Port Washington where the contract of Bill Oppenheimer, first-year mentor last season, was not renewed. Meanwhile, on the home scene, the Dover High Board of Education continues to screen applicants for Tornado grid post with high hopes of coming up with the man they want for the job. The month of June is just started and coaches can still hand in their resignations until the first of July. There could be more resignations.

1st year coach Bill Oppenheimer took over a squad who tied Midvale for 6th place in the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball League with a 4-5 record in 1957. They were over .500 however for the entire season at 13-9. No doubt about it, this is a rebuilding season as all 5 starters from last season were lost to graduation, including Ed Bates who set a tournament record with 50 points in a game.
*
The 1957-1958 season began with a nine game losing streak including a 105-68 thumping by the Midvale Blue Devils. The closest to a win was a 10 point loss to the Tuscarawas Broncos 70-60. After a win over Conesville 53-52, the team lost another nine straight including their last game in the county tournament 71-42, again by Midvale. They ended up in dead last place (9th) at 0-8 and 1-18 for the season.
*
The bright spot in this rebuilding year was freshman Bill Phillips, who may be the best freshman who ever played for a Port Washington team. Looking forward to next year, it appears that the rebuilding will continue, but this time around a young freshman. Things should improve for the future.
*
Highlight - Senior Ron Phillips who received honorable mention on the Tuscarawas County All-League Team and brother, Bill Phillips, who probably broke all records for a freshman at Port Washington.

58 - Midvale Wins 3rd Straight Track Toga (5-10-58)

For the third straight year the Midvale Blue Devils stand atop the county's Class A track teams. They took the coveted title last night at Crater Stadium with a total of 66 1/2 points. Tuscarawas Valley was a surprise second placer with 53 1/2 points, while Gnadenhutten was the only other team in contention for the top honors when it scored 47 1/2 points. Tuscarawas copped the grade school boys championship with a total of 33 points, while Strasburg was crowned champs of the high school girls with 19 markers and Gnadenhutten won the grade school girls crown on 13 points, edging out Garaway, which had 11. During the meet, which started with the preliminaries in the afternoon, a total of seven records were set, while another two were tied. Midvale's sensational speedster, Lonnie Fulp, personally accounted for three of the new records and tied another. In the prelims he ran the 100-year dash in 10.1 seconds, eclipsing the old mark of 10.2 set by Ed Smith of Garaway in 1940. He also set a new standard in the 180-yard low hurdles on a time of 21.2 to top the previous mark of 21.5 held jointly by Midvale's Dick Tolotti in 1953 and Dick Leggett of Midvale last year. His 220-yard dash on a clocking of 22.9 topped an 18-year-old record of 23.1 held by Dave Booth of Midvale. In the finals Fulp tied the old 220-yard mark. Strasburg's George Gessner, short on height, but long on wind, also came in for his share of the record breaking. He set new marks in both the mile and half-mile runs. He ran the mile in 4:46.75 to top a six-year record held by Lewis Frees, also of Strasburg, the old mark being 6:54.4. In the half-mile he topped the 21-year-old record held by former Midvale ace and major leaguer Frankie Baumholtz. The former time was 2:11.3, but George ran it in 2:00.4 last night. Midvale continued to reap the honors as Bill Housel of the Blue Devils crossed the pole vault bar at 10 feet, nine and one-half inches to better the old mark of 10 feet, 9 1/4 inches set by Dick Yurich of Strasburg in 1955. The Blue Devil mile relay squad, comprised of Russ Hobart, Jim Wonosik, Larry McCarty and Tom Krocker broke a record set by a team from their own school last year. This year's timing was 3:47.9, while last year's 3:50.9. The other record which was tied was by Jim Swinderman of Midvale, who won the Grade Boy's 75-year dash in 9.6 to tie a record set by Stauffer of Garaway in 1940. Fulp was far and away the top runner of the night, taking first in the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes and low hurdles and also coming in second in the broad jump for a total of 19 of the Devils' points. Wth the exception of Gessner, the only other double winner in the high school boys division was Tom Roth of Gnadenhutten who won the shotput with a heave of 41 feet 11 2/6 inches and the discus with a toss of 112 feet, nine inches. Ron Bradley of the Tribe garnered a first in the 120-yard high hurdles, while Chuck Locker of Tuscarawas Valley won the broad jump. The Trojan 880-yard relay team of Locker, Dick Cochran, Clarence Cantrill and Walt Deubner also was a winner.

McGlumphy Gets Job At Strasburg (4-16-58)

Confirming a Daily Reporter forecast of a month ago, Ed McGlumphy, Athletic Coach at Stone Creek High two years, today announced he is resigning to become head basketball and baseball coach and assistant football mentor at Strasburg High. He will succeed Charles Caniford, high school principal who will continue as head grid coach. During McGlumphy's two years at Stone Creek, the Panther baseketball teams won 31 games, while losing only 15 despite the fact that they have the smallest enrollment in the county system. In his first season, McGlumphy directed the Panthers to 18 wins in 24 games for the best court record in the history of the school. Sparked by Ron Deibel, now at Heidelberg College, they finished in a tie for second place in the County League and won the consolation tourney title, losing 76-71 to Midvale's regional champions in the sectional playoffs. Last year, headed by Rod Reinhart, Stone Creek had a 13-9 record. Included was a 105-59 verdict over Augusta for a new school mark. A native of Martins Ferry where he was a football, basketball and baseball star, McGlumphy is a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College and taught briefly at Bridgeport before entering the Army. He accepted the Stone Creek post after being discharged in June, 1956. Mrs. McGlumphy is the former Pat Hisrich, daughter of State Rep. and Mrs. Vernon Hisrich of Stone Creek and a county nurse. The McGlumphys reside at 146 Front Avenue SW, New Philadelphia. McGlumphy is the third Strasburg coach acquired from Stone Creek. Ken Newlon, now at Canton Lincoln, coached the Panthers for seven years before taking over for two seasons at Strasburg, while Supt. Maurice R. Helwick of Strasburg is also a former Stone Creek Mentor.

Garaway, Midvale, Gnaden All Baseball Winners In Tuscarawas County (4-15-58)

Garaway's Pirates downed Strasburg 4-3, Midvale topped Baltic 12-8 and Gnadenhutten blasted Port Washington 27-1 in county games yesterday. The Pirates scored their initial marker in the first frame and had single runs in the 5th, 8th and 7th, while Strasburg tallied two in the 2nd and one in the 5th. Going the distance for Garaway was Charley Stingel. He permitted six hits, fanned 12 and issued six walks. The Tigers' Don Warnes was touched for five hits, whiffed eight and walked five. Leading the winners' attack was Gordon Gerber, who stole home in the sixth inning to tie the score and in the seventh hit a bases-loaded single with one out to give the Pirates the victory. Stingel also tripled. Bob Haswell blasted a homer for Strasburg, while Bob Kaltenbaugh tripled in the second, driving in a run.
*
With the Midvale-Baltic game tied at 3-3 after the 3rd, the blue Devils moved ahead 4-3, but the Eagles rallied for a 7-4 margin before starter Bill Housel of Midvale was relieved by Dave Belknap. The Blue Devils then touched Bob Lautensleger of Baltic for three runs in their half of the 5th and got four more in the 6th and one in the 7th. Lonnie Fulp and Belknap led Midvale with three hits apiece, while Ron Huprich and Kandell paced Baltic with the same number. Belknap received credit for the win.
*
Scoring 22 runs in the first four innings, Gnadenhutten had little trouble rolling over Port Washington. Larry Clark limited the Riders to singles by Bill and Ron Phillips, while striking out 12 and permitting only one walk. The Tribesmen were paced by Steve Hamilton, who slapped five hits, including a homer. Ed Shull and Ron Bradley each collected homers, while slamming three hits each and Al Cappel also socked three safeties.

Gnadenhutten Eliminated 65-61 (3-6-58)

Tuscarawas County's last tournament contender, Gnadenhutten, was shunted to the sidelines last night in absorbing a 65-61 loss in a spine-tingling District battle with Powhatan at Brilliant. Holmes County's entry, Big Prairie-Lakeville, also was eliminated by a 72-54 loss to Dillonvale. Both victims had advanced to Brilliant from the Dover Sectional. Powhatan and Dillonvale will collide Friday night for a berth in the Regional event at Canton next week. Gnadenhutten's Indians literally were robbed of victory by the Powhatan Indians. Leading 61-59 with 1:05 remaining, Gnadenhutten saw Jaron Knight, a 6-foot-4 performer who was a big factor in the Powhatan win, hit on a jump shot. He was fouled in the process and cashed the free throw to put his Tribe ahead 62-61. Seconds later Carrington Price made the lead 63-61 with a foul. With 55 seconds left, Coach Dick Scott of Gnadenhutten called for time. When play was resumed, Gnadenhutten took the ball down the floor and began to stall for the last shot which, if successful, would have tied the score. But Lou Brown, playing an alert game for Powhatan, stole the ball from Gnaden's Larry Clark and tossed it to Price, who whipped it through the nets to ice the decision. Not since the first white man set foot into the Ohio Valley has there been such a skirmish as the two Tribes staged. There never was more than seven points separating the two quintets. Gnadenhutten several times being ahead that many, and the count was tied eight times. Gnadenhutten held quarter leads of 20-15, 36-35 and 50-43, but finally gave way before Powhatan's repeated thrusts. The two biggest reasons for Powhatan's triumph were Knight, whose height enabled him to score 14 points in the final period when mates consistently fed him the ball, and Price, who hounded Gnadenhutten's Clark for four quarters and limited the usually high-scoring all-countian to 12 points. Gnaden, which usually hit 50 percent on its field shots, had an off night in that department, sinking only 26 of 73 shots for a 35.6 percent. On the other hand Powhatan took only 53 shots from the floor and tallied on 28 for 52.8 percent. It hit on 9 of 14 fouls, while Gnadenhutten tallied on 9 of 16. The first period saw Gnadenhutten exhibit top-notch ball when it tallied on 9 of 18 shots from the field. Larry Gooding hit on a layup shot early in the period to make the score 4-2 and the Tribe rushed on to a 20-15 margin by the time the period ended. Powhatan finally tied the game at 27-27 with 3:55 remaining in the second stanza when Jan Saner notched a foul after Lou Brown had scored on a set shot. But, a short time later Clark tallied on his accurate off-balance jump try from the corner to put the Indians ahead. Two fouls by Knight tied the score before Ed Shull notched for the Tribe making the score 31-29. Goals by Knight and Price and one by Tom Roth of Gnaden tied the game at 33-33. Then Saner put the Ohio Valley Indians into the lead 35-33 on a jumper. But a foul by Roth and a jump shot by Bradley gave Gnaden a 36-35 lead at half time. Both clubs wre inaccurate in the third period, but Gnaden managed to forge to a 7-point, 50-43 lead by outscoring Powhatan 14 to 8. With time running out Powhatan began to feed Knight early in the final frame. And the lanky cager came through with eight straight points before Gnadenhutten could score one and Powhatan led 51-50 with 5:45 remaining. From there the lead changed hands seven times before Gnaden went ahead 61-59 with 1:05 remaining. The rest is history. Knight led all scorers with 13 goals and six fouls for 32 points, while Saner tallied 17. Leading the Tribe was Ron Bradley with nine goals and two fouls for 20 points, while Tom Roth added 14 and Clark 12. Gnaden ended the season with a 19-7 mark.

Season Note: This marks the end of the Tuscarawas County Basketball League for 1958. An area hardly ever given any attention at all in the league are the Reserve Teams. This year it appears that one reserve team that needs recognition is Baltic. If there was a league title for the reserves it would probably be Baltic in 1958. Their record was 18-1 and that loss was to Walnut Creek. Congratulations all!

Gnadenhutten Are Champions Of The Class A Sectional Tournament 78-71 (3-3-58)

PHOTO: Gnadenhutten High School - Home of the Gnadenhutten Indians.

The Gnadenhutten Indians are the lone Tuscarawas County team still in tourney play. The Indians sidelined the Millersburg Spartans with a 78-71 victory in the finals of the Class A Sectional Saturday night at Memorial Hall. In drawings held yesterday at Brilliant, which alternates with Dover as the site for the district meet, the Indians drew Powhattan of Belmont County and one of the winners of the St. Clairsville Sectional. They will play Wednesday night at 8:45PM. The other local Sectional winner, Big Prairie-Lakeville of Holmes County, will tangle with Dillonvale of Jefferson County in the 7:00PM opener. Powhattan gained the district berth with a 74-72 victory over Conotton Valley Friday night, while Dillonvale topped Springfield Township 60-50 for the Brilliant trip. The Brilliant winners will collide for the district title and the coveted berth in the regional playoffs at Canton at 8:00PM Saturday night. Coach Dick Scott's Indians had to fight off a full court press in the fourth quarter to salvage the victory over Millersburg and the district trip. The Spartans of Coach Joe Banks, down in the final period with a deficit of 11 points, went into the full court defense with five minutes remaining. The strategy forced Gnadenhutten to stall up to the final moments. First quarter action saw the Spartans open strong and jump to a lead of 6-3, before the Indians got out their hatchets. They went ahead 7-6 with five minutes remaining in the period as Ed Shull arched a setter from the outside. From that point Gnadenhutten stayed in the lead for the remainder of the contest, although being tied twice in the remaining minutes of the opening frame. The Tribe spurted for two fielders and a foul to close the period with a 23-15 lead. In the next two periods the Spartans fought valiantly, but could ot match the well-balanced attack of the Tribe which had five starters in double figures. Until the waning moments of the contest the closest Millersburg could cut the Gnaden margin was six points with two minutes to be placed in the second stanza. Millersburg outgoaled the Indians 29-28, but lost at its foul line. The Spartans hit 13 times from there , while the Indians cashed 22, most of which came in the final period when Millersburg players fouled to gain possession of the ball. Pacing the Tribe was all-countians Larry Clark and Ron Bradley. Clark collected eight goals and seven fouls for 23 points, while Bradley tallied eight times from the field for 16. The well-balanced attack was rounded out by Shull's 14, Tom Roth's 12 and Larry Gooding's 11. Millersburg was led by Gary High, who notched 21 points on 10 floor shots and one foul from his guard post. Jim Shonk added 14, Karl Crandall 12 and Paul McCormick 10.

Gnadenhutten Stops Midvale's Reign 80-67 (2-28-58)

PHOTO: GLOOMY. The Midvale Blue Devils cheering section was shrouded in gloom last night when Ralph McKee, Daily Reporter Photographer, snapped this picture near the end of the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils were dropped from the tournament circuit on an 80-67 loss to Gnadenhutten.
*
*
The first quarter appeared to be just another repetition of all other Gnadenhutten-Midvale games with the Indians looking strong in the opening minutes, but fading just enough near the end of the period for the Devils to grab a 17-12 margin. But somewhere, somehow, the Indians found the needed punch and began to creep up on the Blue Devils until the score stood 26-23 midway in the quarter. And with the fires burning high the Scottsmen poured on the steam and rumbled past the Blue Devils as they tallied eight straight points for a 31-26 lead with two minutes to go in the first half. Midvale found itself momentarily and narrowed the gap to 33-31 at the intermission. The Tribe continued on the warpath in the third quarter with the No. 1 warrior being Tom Roth, who led the uprising with 16 points. The period found the Devils battling gamely to keep pace with the torrid attack and then they went ahead 42-41 with four and one-half minutes to go in the quarter. But that was the last time they saw the lead because the Indians took over again at 3:45. The Tribe was in front 57-52 at the period's end. In the final stanza the Indians faltered momentarily and Midvale cut their lead to 57-55, but they regained stride and hit for seven more points to boost their margin to 64-55. They finished the period with 23 while holding the Devils to 15 to spring the upset. Percentage-wise Gnadenhutten had the edge with 34.7, accumulated when it clicked on 32 of 93 field shots. Midvale had a 34.4 mark, making 26 of 72 attempts. Gnadenhutten tallied 16 fouls and Midvale 15. A well-balanced scoring attack was the key to the Gnadenhutten triumph. Leading the Tribe was Tom Roth with 10 goals and three fouls for 23 points, Larry Clark was next with 20, while Larry Gooding and Ron Bradley had 15 and 14 respectively. Tom Krocker and Russ Hobart were the big guns for the Blue Devils with Krocker notching 20 points and Hobart 19. Ron Breniser added 14.

Tribe To Oppose Millersburg In Saturday Final (2-28-58)

Gnadenhutten 80 - Midvale 67! That score signals the end of a 3-month dynasty of the Midvale Blue Devils, who swept, plundered and turned back all opposing forces that dared to stand in their way. That is until they met the Indians in last night's Sectional Tourney here. And then the Warriors did what they couldn't accomplish in three previous meetings with the Blue Devils. Since December 10 when they lost to Strasburg 80-77 the defending state semi-finalists, had won 17 straight contests, including three in the county tournament which netted them the title crown and made them strong favorites to take the local sectional meet. But last night, Gnadenhutten out-rebounded Midvale under both boards in addition to outfighting the Devils at practically every move. The first time the two teams collided was on December 17 when the Blue Devils copped an easy 68-37 triumph, but from there the margins became closer and closer. On January 17, the Indians were dropped 82-73 in a County League game and in the finals of the county tournament Midvale won by only seven points 67-60. But last night, with a berth in the finals Saturday night at stake along with a possible trip to the district meet at Brilliant next week the Tribe was not to be denied. The Tribe's finals opponent will be the Millersburg Spartans, who turned back Dennison 62-52 in the opener. Midvale ended its season with a 19-3 record and Dennison with a 2-17 mark. The Indians and Spartans will carry records of 19-6 and 11-7, respectively, into the finals Saturday night at 8:00PM. Tonight at 8:00PM the other trip to the district tournament will be decided when two Holmes County quintets, Berlin and Big Prairie-Lakeville, collide. Berlin, winner of the Holmes League title, has a 19-4 record and Big Prairie is 17-6.

Gnaden Downs St. Joselph's 72-46 In Sectional Opener (2-26-58)

PHOTO: LONG STRETCH. Tom Roth (77) of Gnadenhutten is caught here by Daily Reporter Photographer Ralph McKee making the long stretch for a layup and two points in the Tribe's 72-46 triumph over Dover St. Joseph's in the opening game of the Class A Sectional Tournament last night at Memorial Hall. Ed Young (4) is defending for the Ramblers.
*
For two quarters, St. Joseph's gave Gnadenhutten, second best team in the county, a whale of a battle. But in the third period the Tribe began to hit with consistency and pulled away. The Ramblers stayed in the running in the initial half despite the fact that the usual high-scoring Eddie Joe Young was held scoreless. He got only eight points in the second half. Both teams failed to hit the nets with consistency in the first quarter when the Tribe pulled out in front 12-7. In the second quarter the Indians taillied 16 points and St. Joseph's 15 to make the score 22-18 at half time. But the Indians began to exhibit their usual topnotch brand of ball in the third stanza when they almost outscored the Ramblers 2 to 1. They hit for 19 points and limited the losers to 10 for a 47-32 lead. Gnadenhutten then had its best quarter when it scored 25 points to St. Joseph's 14. Leading the Indians was Tom Roth, who scored 10 goals and three fouls for 23 points, while teammates Larry Clark and Larry Gooding came through with 18 and 16 respectively. With Young being stopped cold by the alert Tribe defenses, John Ferchill became the only Rambler to hit with consistency and keep the game from being a complete route. He had eight goals and one foul for 17 points.
