Slate Semi-Finals In County Meet (2-19-58)

This county's representatives in next week's Class A sectional tourney at Memorial Hall here will be decided by tomorrow night's semi-finals of the 36th annual county classic. Midvale's Blue Devils (17-2), tourney favorites, will meet Garaway's swashbuckling Pirates (12-10) at 7:30 and Gnadenhutten (16-5), defending tourney titlists, will tangle with Stone Creek's dangerous Panthers (13-8) at 8:45. The Memorial Hall doors will open at 6:30 and the third consecutive capacity attendance is anticipated. Winners of the two contests not only will qualify for sectional play beginning next Tuesday, but also will collide Saturday at 8:45PM for the tourney championship and Daily Reporter trophy. Midvale, also defending regional titlist, whipped Garaway 71-66 January 28. Considering the Blue Devils were on their own court then and still won by only five points they may have their hands full tomorrow night. The Pirates knocked Strasburg out of the running in their first tourney start and then made Tuscarawas Valley walk the plank. Thus some of the figure filberts consider tomorrow night's encounter a tossup. Stone Creek would like nothing better than a victory over Gnadenhutten. The same clubs met for the tourney toga last year and Gnadenhutten won 75-66. During the campaign just closed the Indians scalped Stone Creek 57-51 and 64-41 and went on to finish second behind Midvale in the County League chase. Stone Creek, led by Rod Reinhart, the county's leading scorer, spanked Baltic 75-67 in its tourney start with Reinhart getting 33 points. Gnadenhutten turned back Tuscarawas 63-59 in its debut.
