Midvale, Gnaden To Vie For Title (2-22-58)

Already assured of berths in next week's sectional Memorial Hall, Gnadenhutten and Midvale collide for the county tourney championship tonight at 8:00PM at Memorial Hall. Doors will open at 7:00PM. The Indians will be gunning for their second consectuve tourney title against the favored Blue Devils, county league kings. And for the first time since 1943 there will be no consolation game, because there were only nine teams in this year's tourney. The Daily Reporter trophy will go to tonight's winner. Other awards also are scheduled. Drawing of positions for the Sectional, which opens Tuesday night, will be held Sunday at 5:30PM at Helmkamp's Restaurant under supervison of Supt. W.E. Laws, tourney manager. Results of tonight's game will help determine the seeded teams. Other quintets in the Sectional will be Dover St. Joseph's, Dennison St. Mary's, Dennison High, Millersburg High, Berlin and Big Prairie-Lakeville of Holmes County and Malvern, which beat Augusta 64-30 in last night's Carroll County tourney finale. The Holmes tourney ends tonight at Millersburg. Midvale is a slight favorite in tonight's fray, because it defeated Gnadenhutten twice during the regular campaign, winning 63-53 on the Indians' court and 82-73 on the Midvale floor. The two rivals have recorded two tourney wins to date. Midvale eliminated Port Washington 71-42 and then turned back Garaway 69-68 Thursday night. Gnadenhutten ousted Tuscarawas 63-59 and Stone Creek 72-47. Coach Pete Hilliard is expected to start 6-2 senior Russ Hobart at center, 6-2 junior Bill Housel and 5-11 sophomore Ron Breniser at the forwards and 5-10 juniors Tom Krocker and 5-10 Dave Belknap at the guards. Gnadenhutten mentor Dick Scott probably will have 6-1 senior Larry Gooding at center, 5-11 junior Ron Bradley and 6-foot senior Tom Roth at the forwards and 5-8 senior Larry Clark and 5-8 senior Ed Shull at the guards.
