Hibbs put the Blue Devils on top 2-0 with about 2 minutes gone and they never were headed.  Their press forced the Raiders to give up the ball 24 times on turnovers.  Midvale committed 14 turnovers. Lakeland will hosst Flushing Thursday and visit Hopedale Friday.  Midvale will host Port Washington Saturday.  The Midvale Reserves ran down the Lakeland Reserves 53-37.

66 - Dover St. Joseph's Rips Tusky 69-58 (1-15-66)

Rambler Al Antonelli tries for a 2-pointer as Bronco Ray McWilliams (31) defends.  Others in photo are Broncos Jim McCauley (23) and John Bihari (45) and Rambler Dave Myers (52).

Rambler Coach Art Teyner takes advantage of a timeout to give instructions to Larry Smith, Dave Myers and Mickey McCracken.  Substitute Pat Antonelli listens in on the conversation.

DOVER - Jeff Lammers and Denny Capozella sparked a 2nd half surge that carried Dover St. Joseph's to victory over Tuscarawas (6-6) Saturday night.  Lammers came off the bench to toss in 14 points, 10 coming via the foul lines where the game was decided.  Both teams made 22 field goals.  Capozella ended with 16 points, 13 of them coming after the intermission.  Pat Antonelli also came off the bench to pop in 7 key points.

St. Joseph's took a 17-14 lead at the 1st stop, but the 2 teams reversed point totals to go into the lockerrooms deadlocked 31-31.  A rebound shot from the top of the key by Pat Antonelli at the buzzer enabled the Ramblers to pull even, 47-47, going into the final frame.  Lammers then found the range for 2 field goals and 5 fouls and Capozella tossed in a pair of goals and a foul to lead the Ramblers "home."

Both teams were severely hampered by personal fouls, referees Bernie Cromi of Canton and Ray Kennedy of New Philadelphia calling 42 infractions, 23 against the Broncos.  The Ramblers got in foul trouble early having 16 in the 1st half.  The 2nd half found the Broncos picking up 15.  St. Joseph's lost "quarterback" Mickey McCracken at 4:33 of the 3rd quarter when Tuscarawas was on top 37-33.  He had 4 in the 2nd stanza.  Teammate Dave Myers had 3 in the 2nd and picked up his 4th at 4:38 of the third.  He didn't play from then on.  Capozella was able to finish the game; although, being saddled with 4 personals in the 2nd period.  Broncos John Bihari and Brent Lehigh both ended with 4, Bihari drawing his 4th at :05 of the 3rd quarter and Lehigh picking up his 4th at 6:55 of the fourth.  Teammate Dave Paisley went out at 1:27 of the 4th after picking up his 4th at 3:11 of the third.

Paisley, who only Friday night tied the Tuscarawas single game point record with 42 in a 116-115 loss to Gnadenhutten, mustered just 11 points against the Ramblers.  He made only 4 of 20 field goal tries.  As a team, the Broncos were able to hit on 22 of 73 field goal attempts for a cool 30 percent.  They sank 14 of 26 fouls.  St. Joseph's also made 22 field goals, in 61 tries for a respectable 36 percent.  It was 25 of 35 from the foul lines.  Hustling Ray McWilliams paced the Bronco offensive, netting 17 points.  Bihari got 15.  Larry Smith rounded out the double figure performers for the Ramblers, tossing in 12 points, all but one coming before intermission.  Smith was a big man under the boards, picking off 12 of St. Joseph's 36 rebounds.  McWilliams got 16, Lehigh 11 and Bihari 10 as the Broncos grabbed a total of 49.  St. Joseph's committed just 4 turnover, by far their best showing in this department all season.  Tuscarawas lost the ball this way 13 times.

Art Teynor's Ramblers took a 5-2 lead after McWilliams opened the scoring off a rebound.  It was back and forth until early in the 2nd stanza when the Ramblers hiked their advantage to 22-16.  They still led, 27-21, when the Charles Etling-coached Broncos racked up 8 straight points to go in front 29-27 just before the end of the 1st half.  Smith hit 2 quick buckets, but Paisley sneaked under for a goal with 7 seconds remaining to tie the count.  That was his 1st field goal of the night.  Paisley dropped in a 13-footer from the baseline early in the 3rd quarter and the Broncos opened up the pointy spread somewhat leading 39-34, 43-36 and 45-39 before the Ramblers began finding the range again.  Lammers sank 2 fouls and after Butch Reed scored from the floor for Tuscarawas, Capozella cashed in on a 3-point play.  Lammers made a foul and Antonelli came up with his shot at the buzzer to tie the score.  Antonelli took a pass fom Capozella off the 4th quarter tip and drove in for 2 points to put St. Joseph's on top 49-47.  After Paisley hit, Al Antonelli rebounded in a shot and then lmade it a 3-point play when he was fouled by Lehigh.  St. Joseph's never trailed again, out scoring the visitors 13-3 to assume a 65-55 lead with 2:11 left in the game.St. Joseph's visits Zanesville Friday to tangle with Rosecrans.  Tuscarawas visits Malvern Saturday.

The Bronco Reserves (8-3) won the preliminary 42-31 as Donehue got 11 points, Goshorn and Knisley 10 each and McCauley 8.  Jeff Recchiuti had 13 and Tom Bazzoli 6 for the young Ramblers.

66 - Dover St. Joseph's Squeaks By Gnaden 55-52 (1-12-66)

St. Joseph's Mickey McCracken is hemmed in by Gnadenhutten defenders Dan Bosley (33), Jerry Ridgeway and Bill Kohl.

Rambler Larry Smith hustles to grab a pass from teammate Jeff Lammers who gets the ball away despite the efforts of Indian Bill Kohl.  Others in photo are Ramblers Denny Capozella and Dave Myers and Indians Mike Kail (41) and Dan Jinks.

DOVER - Dover St. Joseph's snapped its 5-game losing streak last night by outhustling guest Gnadenhutten (3-8) for a 55-52 victory.  The Ramblers (4-5), idle since December 21 and winless since December 7, achieved the victory with a spurt of points early in the 4th quarter.  Art Teynor's lads will host Tuscarawas (6-4) Saturday.  Gnadenhutten visits Tuscarawas Friday.  St.  Joseph's hustle was clearly evident under the boards, as it outrebounded the same-size Indians 56-37.  Junior Dave Myers was the big man, pulling in 22.  Larry Smith snared 11, including 8 in the 3rd quarter.  Myers pulled in 7 in the 1st frame and the same number in the fourth.

Smith took scoring honors for the night, canning 19 points.  Eight came in the final frame and 6 in the third.  Denny Capozella drilled in 15 before reinjuring his knee with 1:57 left in the game and the Ramblers on top 51-46.  Mickey McCracken, the team's "quarterback," meshed 14.  Dan Jinks, Tuscarawas County's leading point-maker with 258 going into the game, was held to 6 the 1st half then came on strong to finish with 18, Bill Kohl added 11.  Kohl was Gnadenhutten's top rebounder with 10.  Jinks snared 8.  St. Joseph's hit on 21 of 68 action attempts for 30 percent and made 13 of 26 fouls.  Gnadenhutten canned 20 of 67 from the floor for 29 percent and sank 12 of 15 fouls.  Eleven personals were called against the Ramblers and 17 against the Indians.  St. Joseph's committed 12 turnovers and Gnadenhutten 9.  The score was tied 6 times and the lead changed hands 6 times before Smith dropped in a goal just before the 3rd quarter ended to put the Ramblers ahead 34-33.  The score was tied 7-7 at the 1st stop, with the Ramblers taking a 21-20 advantage into the lockerroom at the half and remaining on top, by 38-35, going into the 4th quarter.

Then with Myers clearing the boards and Smith and Capozella putting in the points, the Ramblers jumped out for a 45-37 margin and later led 47-39 and 51-41 with about 3:33 left when the Oren Thompson-coached Indians began rallying.  Turning on the steam, the Indians hustled their way to 5 straight points...all by Jinks...to pull to within 5 at 51-46 with 1:57 left.  Having the Ramblers on the run, the Indians kept applying the pressure and tossed in 4 more straight points...on a goal by Mike Kail and 2 fouls by Don Finnicum...to narrow the gap to a single point, 51-50.  Then  with 34 seconds remaining, McCracken was fouled by Jinks and the former stepped to the line and sank both tries.  Jinks then missed a field goal try and Myers snared the important rebound.  Smith, fouled by Jinks...his 5th...iced the verdict with 2 free tosses with 20 seconds to go.  Kohl tossed in a goal with 11 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.  The Ramblers won the preliminary Reserve contest 31-28, as Jeff Recchiuti tossed in 15 points.

CADIZ - Strasburg High's talented basketballers (7-2) notched their 7th win of the season Saturday night over a strong Cadiz Cardinal quintet.  It was only the 2nd loss for Cadiz.  Strasburg, also a 2-time loser, will host Port Washington (2-5) Friday as it resumes Tuscarawas County Class A League warfare.  The most talented Tiger of them all, 6-3 Junior John Studer, again was the chief scorer for the Charlie Huggins-coached basketballers.  He hit on 14 of 25 field goals and 3 of 5 fouls for 31 points.  It was his 4th 30-point or better night of the season  and gives him a total of 248, just 10 behind county leader Dan Jinks of Gnadenhutten.  Studer, a prime candidate for All-Ohio honors, got plenty of help, with Ed Yackey 13.  High for the Cardinals was Dean Smith who meshed 28.  Huggins called the pivot man one of the best his Tigers have come up against all season.  Studer also paced the Tigers in rebounds, grabbing 13 of 39.  Yackey gave strong board support, snaring 11.  Charlie Jones played an outstanding defensive game, Mike Rieger handled the ball well and set up the offense and Rusk played his usual steady game.  Huggins called the performance one of his team's better ones of the campaign.  Strasburg drilled in 28 field goal tries and 25 fouls.  Yackey and Studer sat out half of the 3rd quarter and 3 minutes of the 4th because of personal fouls and Dick Fox was forced to the bench with 5 personals early in the final frame.  The Cadiz Reserves took the Strasburg Reserves by a score of 66-46.

BERLIN - Two fine cage teams fought furiously last night, with Hiland (7-2) coming out on top of a decision against Strasburg (5-2).  The 2 titans were locked in a tremendous struggle all the way, with the score being tied 13-13 at the 1st stop and 25-25 at the half before the Charles Huggins-coached Tigers slipped in front 43-40 going into the final frame.  The Hawks then zeroed in on the nets, while the Tigers couldn't find the range and soon the hosts had a 7-point lead.  The Tigers battled gamely to try and get back in contention and pulled to within 3 points before standout John Studer fouled out with 16 seconds remaining.  Strasburg was in foul trouble early and it undoubtedly hapered its style of play.  Studer, Ed Yackey and Dick Fox all were saddled with 3 personals in the 1st half.  The Tigers also played without the service of the ailing Mike Rieger.  Hiland, coached by Abe Mast, hit on 52 percent of its action shots and made 17 of 23 fouls.  Strasburg hit on 47 percent of its action tries and was 8 of 13 from the foul lines.  Strasburg will visit Northwest on January 7th and Hiland will travel to Tuslaw that same night.  The Hiland Reserves fought back the Strasburg Reserves, 32-28.

MIDVALE - Pete Hilliard's Midvale Blue Devils (8-2) hardly worked up a sweat last night in routing Hopedale's Comets.  Midvale thus closes out the 1965 portion of its basketball season with a gleaming record.  Last night, the Blue Devils rolled to a 24-5 lead at the 1st stop, 42-9 at the half and 85-24 going into the final frame.  Hilliard called his starters to the bench with about 3 minutes gone  in the 3rd canto.  Ten different players scored for the Big Blue, 5 hitting double figures.  Lee Eberly led the way with 21 points.  Chuck DeMattio had 19, Bill Hibbs 15, Bob Carlisle 13 and Bob Morrison 11.  High for Hopedale was Long with 10.  Midvale drilled in 42 of 74 action attempts for a blistering 57 percent and made 15 of 29 fouls.  Hopedale was 8 of 49 from the floor for a meager 16 percent and 12 of 21 from the foul lines.  Rebounds favored Midvale 46 to 18, with DeMattio pulling in 11, Eberly 8 and Morrison 8.  Long grabbed 8 for Hopedale.  Hopedale stalled the ball for the final 4 minutes.  Midvale's Reserves kept pace with the Varsity by winning 46-20.

66 - Garaway Blasts Gnadenhutten 87-44 (12-29-65)

THEY HOPE INDIANS WILL 'WALK THE PLANK'.  Taking time out from holiday festivities to lead the cheering for Garaway High Schools' basketballers tonight against visiting Gnadenhutten will be Sharon Young, Vicky Schlarb, Beth Mulschelknaus, Carol Flynn, Jane Plummer, Jane Finzer, Sueanna Schott, Sandy Schumacher and Jean Plummer.

Gnadenhutten's Wayne Martin and Bill Kohl pull a "stickup" against Garaway's Dex Sedwick.

Garaway's Dex Sedwick went all out to come up with this loose ball and now looks for someone to pass  it  to.  In the rear is teammate Dave Andreas.

SUGARCREEK - A bit perturbed by his team's showing in the 1st quarter against Gnadenhutten (2-6) last night, Garaway Coach Glenn Bower benched 3 of his starters.  The result was a fired up team that went on to crush the Indians.  Garaway (5-2) will visit Tuscarawas January 7th.  Gnadenhutten will visit Lakeland January 4th.

The Indians led the Pirates 14-12 at the end of the 1st quarter, but when Bower put the starters back in halfway through the 2nd quarter it was all but over.  The Pirates went on to take a 40-16 halftime margin and led 72-31 going into the fiknal frame.  They outscored the Indians 21-1 atone stretch in the 3rd canto.  Don Richardson carried the load in the 2nd quarter with 5 field goals on some great outside shooting and finished with 14 points.  It was a well-balanced Pirate attack, with Dave Andreas leading the way with 16 points.  Dan Andreas and Terry Gerber both got 13 and Rod Showers 12.  High for Oren Thompson's Indians were Dan Jinks and Bill Kohl with 18 and 16, respectively.  Garaway enjoyed a fine night of shooting, hitting on 38 of 85 field goal tries for 44 percent.  Gnadenhutten was 14 of 54 for 26 percent.  From the foul lines, the Pirates made 11 of 19 and the Indians 16 of 25.  Rebounds favored Garaway 36 to 13, with Dan Andreas pulling in 15 and brother Dave snaring 9.  The Garaway Reserves also had their way with the Gnadenhutten Reserves pulling off a 35-20 win.

66 - Conotton Valley Takes Down Midvale 67-66 (12-28-65)

LEESVILLE - It took a long time, but Conotton Valley's basketballers (6-2) have gotten even with Midvale's Blue Devils (7-2).  Midvale whipped the Rockets in overtime at Midvale last season, but last night it was the Rockets turn to howl as they topped Midvale.  Errol Jacobs' Rockets broke the game wide open in the 3rd quarter by scoring 27 points, while holding Midvale to 4.  That gave Conotton Valley a 50-26 edge going into the final frame.  Conotton Valley led the Pete Hilliard-coached Blue Devils 11-9 at the 1st stop and 23-22 at the half.  No more than 3 points separated the 2 cage titans during the first 2 periods.  The loss snapped Midvale's gleaming 5-game winning streak.  It will host Hopedale Thursday.  Conotton Valley has a 3-game winning streak going.  It will visit Franklin January 7th.

Conotton Valley hit on 49 percent of its field goal tries and made 10 of 20 fouls.  Midvale canned just 15 of 63 floor shots and hit the target 10 times in 17 tries from the foul lines.  John Conner paced the Rockets in scoring with 18 points.  Jim Monigold got 15 and Bruce Millhorn 10.  High for Midvale was Harvey Byers with 14.  Bob Carlisle got 12.  The Rockets dominated board  play, with Neil Cadle snaring 15 rebounds, Ken Beamer 13, Monigold 12 and Conner 7.  In the Reserve game, Conotton nipped the Midvale Reserves, 38-37.

66 - Garaway Eckes By Ridgewood 57-52 (12-23-65)

Garaway ace Dan Andreas, who scored 19 points as the Pirates defeated Ridgewood, pulls down a rebound.

Dave Andreas of Garaway wrestles for possession of the basketball with Ridgewood's Phil Duren.  Ready to help is General Neil Honabarger and Pirate Rod Showers.

SUGARCREEK - Dan Andreas, after being benched early in the 3rd period because of foul trouble, came on in the final stanza to spark Garaway High (4-2) to a victory over Ridgewood's stubborn Generals last night.  Andreas, who incurred his 3rd personal just after the 2nd half began, scored 9 of the Pirates final period points.  With the score deadlocked 48-48 he tallied the crucial markers on a 3-point play that put Garaway in the lead for keeps.  He ended the night with 19.  During his 3rd quarter absence Ridgewood had wiped out a 10 point Pirate advantage.  Supporting Andreas in the scoring column, as Garaway wrapped up its 4th victory, was guard Jim Young who tallied 11.  In winning, Garaway snapped Ridgewood's 3-game winning streak.  Pacing the Generals were Regis Shivers with 13 points, Neil Honabarger with 12 and Phil  Duren with 13.  Garaway, which returns to action next Wednesday night when it entertains Gnadenhutten in a non-league game, hit 23 of 74 floor shots for 31 percent.  It added 11 of 19 free throws.  The General swished 19 of 50 field goal attempts for 38 percent and 14 of 23 charity tosses.  The Ridgewood Reserves started the night by blasting the Garaway Reserves 46-28.
