MIDVALE - The 1965-66 basketall season has just begun and already there's a key game on tap.  That would be the Midvale (2-0) and Garaway (1-0) tussle Friday night at Midvale in what will go a long way toward determining the final standing of the Tuscarawas County Class A League.  Midvale won its second straight non-league engagement Satuday, nipping Strasburg (0-1), while Garaway was ripping Conotton Valley 59-44.  The Blue Devils' tight press turned the tide in their favor against the Tigers, the latter committing 17 turnovers.  Midvale committed just 9.

The battle was close all the way, Midvale holding an 18-13 advantage at the 1st stop and leading 53-49 going into the final quarter after Strasburg fought for a 38-34 halftime lead.  Midvale led most of the way; although, the Tigers never trailed by much.  The 12th year Pete Hilliard-coached Blue Devils led by 3 points with about a minute left when talented Junior John Studer cashed in on a 3-point play to tie the count 64-all.  Strasburg gained control of the ball, but Dan Fox slipped behind Studer and stole the ball and the Blue Devils then employed the stall until 15 seconds were left when Harvey Byers sank both ends of a one-and-one situation.  The Blue Devils again stole the ball off their excellent press and Byers was awarded 2 shots because of an intentional foul with 2 seconds to go.  He made both and the game belonged to Midvale.

Byers ended as the top scorer of the night with 24 points.  Teammates Bill Hibbs and Bob Carlisle both tossed in 14.  Studer paced the 1st year Charlie Huggins-coached Tigers with 22 points.  Teammates Ed Rusk followed with 17 and Mike Rieger added 13.  For the game, Midvale sank 23 of 57 action attempts for a good 40 percent and actually won out at the free throw line by sinking 22 of 31.  Strasburg outscored Midvale from the floor, drilling in 24 of 42 shots for a blistering 51 percent.  The Tigers sank 16 of 21 charities.  Rebounds favored Strasburg 27 to 23, with Rusk grabbing 11 and Studer 7.  Hibbs had 8 and Chuck DeMattio 6 for Midvale.  Midvale (2-0) also won the Reserve game over Strasburg (0-1) by a score of 44-35.
