65 - Strasburg Brings Down Tuscarawas Valley 5-1 (5-3-65)
GNADENHUTTEN - Strasburg (3-0) mastered rival Tuscarawas Vallely (1-2). Mills (3-0), who went the distance in pitching his 3rd tournament triumph, had a perfect game until Fred Clugston worked him for a walk with 2 outs in the 4th inning. Prior to that, the Tiger ace had faced 11 men, striking out 10 of them. He ended with 16 stikeouts, walked 2 and was touched for 3 hits, all singles. Strasburg, had plenty of difficulty with the crafty slants of Tuscarawas Valley's Gary Adams (1-2). Adams was hit hard by the Tigers for 6 innings, but every time a Tiger hit the ball, it was directly to a fielder. That is until the 7th frame when the Bengals exploded for 5 runs on 4 hits to end what had been a tightly-fought contest. Mills had little difficulty with Trojan batters until the 5th inning. Sam Wright worked him to a 3 and 2 count and then went to 1st on a base on balls. Left hand hitting Dan Burrier stepped to the plate and on Mills' 1st pitch, rocketed a line drive past the outstretched glove of Tiger 3rd baseman Terry Gerber. It was the 1st hit of the game off Mills. To prove it wasn't a fluke, Trojan Ray Locker singled through the right side of the infield, scoring Wright and giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the 6th, Strasburg loaded the bases. But, the rally was doused by fine Trojan fielding. Dave Keller, who singled to open the frame, was erased at 2nd on Tom Dreher's roller to short. Dreher then went to 3rd when Ron Lab singled to left. Adams issued Rocky VanFossen an intentional pass to load the bases. But, when Terry Spidell bounced back to Adams, the Trojan hurler tossed to catcher Ray Nist, forcing Dreher at home plate. Nist in turn threw to 3rd baseman Sidney Smith, forcing Lab. The same base-filling maneuver in the 7th inning proved costly for the Trojans. John Studer ignited the rally when he blasted a 325-foot double to left field. Gerber was safe on a bunt single to 3rd with Studer going to 3rd. Mike Rieger was sent in by Coach Pete Angelo to run for Studer and the Trojans decided that Terry Hess, who previously had sent lofty slams into left field for outs, should receive an intentional pass to fill the bases. It was a big mistake. Keller followed with a single to left, driving in Rieger and Dreher cleaned the bases on a hard-hit single to left. A miscue by Trojan left fielder Bill Johnson permitted Dreher to reach 3rd base standing up. Dreher scored shortly after when Spidell's grounder to short was fumbled. Adams was touched for 9 hits altogether, walked 3 and struck out 4.
