66 - Port Washington Falls In Cage Opener 62-50 (11-13-65)
The only Tuscarawas County school without a football team...Port Washington...opens it's basketball season against the Zane Trace Pioneers. There are just 3 letterman in camp, Rich Fillman (165 points last year), Roger Lewis (100 points), and Jerry Stephens (53 points) who are going over practice plans with Coach George Thomas.
OLD WASHINGTON - Zane Trace (1-0) overcame a 1-point deficient at the end of the 1st quarter and went on to top Port Washington (0-1) Saturday night in the 1965-66 basketball opener. After trailing 13-12, Zane Trace led 31-24 and 45-39 at the quarter stops. Jeff Allen of the victors was high scorer for the game with 23 points. Teammates Dan Jackson and Dean Robinson had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Tops for Port Washington, coached by George Thomas, were Roger Lewis and Rich Fillman with 12 points each. Purple Rider Freshman Jeff Huston was high rebounder with 13 as Port Washington grabbed a team total of 45. Port Washington hit on 31 percent of its action shots. Both teams played a man-to-man defense except for presses late in the 1st half and near the end of the game. Two technical fouls were called against Port Washington, one against Assistance Coach, Joe Lopez, and the other against a player. It was a hard...fought game to the final buzzer. There was no report of a Reserve game.

NOTE: The 1965-66 basketball season is going to be a challenge. Research shows missing material for much of the season. Most troubling will be the league games which are reported in the Saturday papers. The Saturday and Sunday newspapers are not available for most of the season. Will report scores and stats as we encounter them.
