Indian Bill Kohl tries to block a Raider's shot. Waiting for a possible rebound are Indians Dan Jinks and Wayne Martin.
TUSKY GRAD IS LAKELAND COACH - Gary Caviness, an outstanding basketball player at Tuscarawas high from where he was graduated in 1960, has only 3 lettermen with which to build his 1965-66 team at Lakeland High in Harrison County. They are Gary Arnold, Bob Bardall and Jim Todd. All 3 are Seniors, but have very little varsity experience. Caviness coached at Frederickstown last season.
GNADENHUTTEN - It looks as if Gary Caviness is going to enjoy as much success as a coach as he did as an athlete for Tuscarawas High. Caviness was able to "take it easy" in his coaching debut, sitting back and watching as his Lakeland quintet (1-0) ripped Gnadenhutten (1-1) last night.
The Raiders drilled in 48 percent of their action shots and 57 percent of their charity tosses. The Indians of Coach Oren Thompson made just 26 percent of their floor flings and popped in 57 percent of their fouls. Four Raiders hit double figures, Don Ferguson leading the way with 15 points. Right behind with 14 were Bob Bardall, Lincoln Simpson and Denny Luyster. Mike Kail paced the Indians with 17 points. Dan Jinks, who opened the season with 50 points against Newcomerstown Saturday night was "held" to 16. The Raiders held Jinks scoreless in the 1st quarter. Lakeland fired in 26 of 59 action shots and grabbed 27 rebounds. Luyster, a Freshman, led theboard work with 10 grabs. Lakeland led 10-5 at the 1st rest, then 32-15 and 53-20. A Reserve game was not reported.
