66 - Hiland Hands Garaway 1st Loss 66-58 (12-11-65)

BERLIN - Hiland (4-1) led at all the stops Saturday night in handling Garaway (2-1) its 1st loss of the season.  The Hawks, atoning for two 1964-65 setbacks at the hands of the Pirates, were on top 20-13 after one quarter, 39-33 at the half and 53-47 going into the final frame.  The Hawks led by 12 points midway through the 3rd canto.  It was the 1st loss for Garaway which had won its 1st two.  Hiland losing only 67-45 to Loundonville in its 2nd outing.  The Pirates will try to rebound Friday against Tuscarawas Valley and will visit Strasburg Saturday.  The Hawks visit tough Cadiz Friday and are idle Saturday.  Jim Young got the Glenn Bower-coached Pirates off on the right track, drilling in a 2-pointer.  Teammate Dan Andreas, a talented 6-4 Junior, made it 4-0 before the Hawks took the lead.  Down by those 12 points in the 3rd quarter, the Pirates fought back to pull to within 6.  But the Hawks put the stop to that and upped the advantage once again, this time to 10 points.  Garaway never led after the Hawks went on top early in  the 1st quarter.  The Pirates tried gamely to pull it out in the final stages, but Hawk Art Miller sank 4 fouls to put the verdict on ice for his team.

Miller paced the Abe Mast-coached Hawks in scoring, burning the nets for 27 points.  Andreas had that many to lead the Pirates.  Also in double figures were Hawks Ken Miller 15, John Hochstetler 11,  and Merle Mullet 10 and Pirates' Young and Terry Gerber with 12 each.  Both teams enjoyed excellent nights from the floor and it actually was at the foul lines where the contest was decided.  Hiland hit on 23 of 45 action attempts, while Garaway dropped through 26 of 58.  But at the charity stripes, the Hawks popped in 20 of 26, while the Pirates were making 6 of 10.  Rebounds favored Garaway 27 to 25, with Andreas pulling in 13.  Ken Miller grabbed 8 for the Hawks.  The Hiland Reserves ran-down the Garaway Reserves 39-20.
