Members of the 1965-66 Garaway High School Basketball team are:  Manager Greg Troyer, Manager Bill Miller, Jim Young, Terry Gerber, John Fankhuser, Rich Richardson, Glen Youngen, Jeff Schlarb, Don Richardson, Dan Andreas, Rod Showers, Dave Andreas, Dex Sedwick, Assistant Coach Dick Gummere, Assistant Coach Andy Huffman and 4th year Head Coach Glenn Bower.

SUGARCREEK - Garaway (1-0) notched a win in its opening basketball test Saturday night over Conotton Valley (0-1).  The game resembled a football contest at times, with 46 personal fouls being  called...24 against Garaway.  Each team lost 2 players via the personal foul route in the final frame.  Talented Dan Andreas, an All-Ohio selection a year ago took up where he left off to lead the Pirates of 4th year Coach Glenn Bower to victory.  The 6-4 Junior ripped the cords for 28 points and grabbed 25 rebounds in a tremendous all-around effort.  The Pirates actually won the game because of their tremendous rebound ability, pulling in an amazing 54, while limiting 3rd year Coach Errol Jacobs' Rockets to a mere 15.  Riding the crest on a sizzling 1st quarter and the strong shoulders of Andreas, the Pirates riddled the Rockets from the opening whistle until the final buzzer.

Conotton Valley took an early led as the result of a charity toss by Bruce Milhorn and a layup by Jim Monigold before Pirate Terry Gerber hit on a 15-footer.  Gerber's "hit" was the spark the Pirates needed as they went on to drill in 5 straight action shots to take an 11-3 advantage.  The Pirates kept up the hot pace and held  a 21-7 lead at the 1st stop as they hit on 10 of 18 floor shots, while the Rockets made just 1 of 7.  The visitors came out strong in the 2nd stanza as Ken Beamer, Monigold and Neil Cadle all found the range to cut the Pirate lead to 21-13.  Andreas then popped in a jumper and 5 charity tosses between 4 free throws by Monigold and baskets by Rocket John Conner and Pirate Jim Young.  Garaway held a 30-19 lead at the half.  Beamer, a 6-4 Junior, was saddled with 4 personals in the 2nd stanza and was sent to the bench.

The Rockets kept in contention at the foul line in the 3rd period and cut the deficit to 31-23 before the Pirates again waxed hot to score 11 straight points (6 by Andreas) to take a 45-25 margin.  The Pirates led 45-29 going into the final frame.  The Rockets began to come alive halfway through the last quarter with the score 54-39.  They cut the margin by 10 points with 2 minutes left before Conner, Monigold and Beamer all were lost via personals.  Garaway, already missing Dex Sedwick, Young and Don Richardson via personals, was content to hang onto the ball and force the Rockets to foul.  For the night, Garaway hit on 21 of 58 action shots for 36 percent and sank 17 of 29 free throws.  Gerber and Young followed Andreas in the scoring department with 13 and 12, respectively.  Dave Andreas snared 9 rebounds.  Conotton Valley made 12 of 46 floor flings for 26 percent and made 26 of 33 fouls.  Monigold was the team's top scorer with 21 points.  Beamer was the team's leading rebounder with 4.  Kim Sedwick led the Pirate Reserves (1-0) to a 37-29 victory with 12 points.  Fred Young added 10.  Gary Palmer had 10 for the young Rockets.
