66 - Port Washington Picks Up 1st Against Gnadenhutten 62-59 (12-11-65)

PORT WASHINGTON - The Purple Riders (1-3) couldn't have picked a better time to come up with their 1st win of the season.  Not only were they playing rival Gnadenhutten (2-3), but it also was homecoming.  The hosts were able to overcome a 32-point outburst by Indian Dan Jinks in taking the verdict.  Bill Kohl put the Indians in front 1-0 on a charity toss early in the contest and it was a see-saw tussle for the rest of the quarter as the count was knotted at 5-5 and 9-9 before Port Washington took a 12-11 lead at the rest.  The second stanza saw the Riders use a sticky press as they lengthened their lead to 28-18 at halftime.

Following a fine performance by the Gnadenhutten Thunderettes at halftime, Port Washington waxed hot as they took a 23-point lead midway in the 3rd canto.  They hit on 8 of 10 action shots during the 8-minute span to lead by 13 points going into the final frame.  Determined to overcome the deficit, the Indians rallied to knot the count at 54-54 with 2:37 remaining.  The Riders; however, weren't about to give up as they simply outhustled the invaders the remainder of the way in taking the desperately-wanted victory.  For the night, the Riders canned 24 of 48 action shots for 50 percent.  From the foul line, they sank 16 of 22.  Rebounds favored the victors 31 to 18, as Jeff Huston pulled down 13.  Playing near-perfect ball, the Riders committed but 3 turnovers.

Leading the Riders' scoring attack was Jerry Stephens with 24 markers, followed by Huston with 10.  Gnadenhutten was led by Jinks with 32, aided by 13 points from Kohl.  The Indians sank 19 of 58 shots for 33 percent.  From the charity stripe, Gnadenhutten hit on 21 of 28.  High rebounder was Jinks with 8.  The Indians committed but 2 turnovers the entire game.  Port Washington's Reserves made the night complete as they came up with a 32-27 win.
