65 - Powhatan Drops Strasburg 3-2 in District Tournament (5-11-65)
A dejected Bob Mills of Strasburg waits to accept the Runner-Up Trophy from Tournament Manager W. E. Laws. Looking on is Jim Volpe of Champion Powhatan.
GNADENHUTTEN - Powhatan (8-0) tightened its stranglehold on Eastern District Class A Baseball by nipping the Strasburg's Tigers (5-1) yesterday afternoon at Gnadenhutten to advance to Regional Tournament play in North Canton next week. A duel between 2 talented righthanders, Strasburg's Bob Mills (4-1) and Powhatan's Jim Volpe, ended when the Indians came from behind in the 6th inning to plate the tying and winning runs. The Indians, in continuing to monopolize Eastern District Title honors added their 7th straight such award to its trophy case. In 3 years they have only lost 6 games, while winning 33. At North Canton, Powhatan will be seeking to regain the Regional Crown it won in 1963 en route to the State Title and an over-all 15-2 record. One of the old hands of that Championship combination was Volpe, whose pitching was instrumental in the indians' drive. Now a Senior, he was on the mound yesterday, striking out 11 Tigers. He retired the side in the crucial final inning. He didn't walk a man and limited the Bengals to 3 singles, one each by Terry Hess (3), Ron Lab (10) and John Studer (5). Almost equal to the occasion was Mills, heartbroken as was every other Tiger over the loss. Mills, who had hurled Strasburg into the District with 4 victories in as many efforts, fanned 13 Indians, walked only one and permitted 7 hits.
Powhatan took an early lead in the contest when it scored in the 3rd inning...a walk to leadoff man John Lyslen, a bloop single down the right field line by Volpe and Terry Snively's broken bat single between 3rd and shortstop scored Lysien. The Tigers countered with 2 runs in the 5th with Studer and Don Gerber scoring. Studer led off by singling to centerfield. He advanced to 2nd on Gerber's bunt. Both were safe when the throw at 2nd arrived too late for the force. Mills smacked a roller to shortstop Dave Dierkes who threw wild past 1st baseman Lysien and Studer raced home with Stasburg's 1st run. Terry Hess, who had been hitting some long fouls off Volpe, was intentionally passed to fill the bases with one out. Dave Keller then sent a longfly to center with Gerber tagging up and scoring to put the Tigers ahead by one run.
Just as fast; however, Powhatan bounced back in the lead, one the Tigers couldn't surmount in 2 innings. Terry Snively was safe at 1st when Strasburg 1st sacker Rocky VanFossen dropped a peg from shortstop Lab. Snively stole 2nd and scored on Dierkes' single to short center. Dierkes, who went to 2nd on the throw-in, advanced to 3rd on Bill Boltz's slow infield roller, beat out for a hit and scored the winning run when Sam Armann sent a broken-bat bouncer to short. In losing, Strasburg became the last county team to bow out of State Tournament playoff activity. It carried a 5-0 record into the contest.
