UHRICHSVILLE - Record-smashing performances in 5 events and record-tying effort in a 6th,  Midvale's return to the high school boys throne and Tuscarawas Valley's defense of the grade boys title: That's the summary on Saturday's county track and field meet.  In snagging  the cinder title,  Midvale returned to the top of the heap after a year in a position it relinquished to Tuscarawas a year ago.  The crowning achievement to a near-perfect athletic year could come for the Blue Devils Saturday when they bid for district laurels.  In addition to the county track title, they have refurbished their trophy case by winning the Tuscarawas Valley Conference track meet, shared the conference football title and shared the County Class A Basketball League toga with Strasburg and Garaway.  Tuscarawas Valley was Midvale's chief contender and had no threats in the Grade boys event.

Chief among names erased from the record book was that of former Midvale athlete Bill Housel, who held standards in 2 events.  One of them is gone, the other he now shares.  Blue Devil Gene Belba took care of Housel's county and school standards in the pole valut by leaping 11 feet 9.5 inches.  And he used a new fiberglass pole, purchased only last Wednesday by Midvale's Booster Club, to turn the trick.  Housel's county meet high was 10 feet, 10.5 inches, set in 1959 and his school record stood at 11 feet 8 inches.  Linking his name beside Housel's in the high jump was Tuscarawas' Russ McGlothlin who equaled the Midvale athlete's 1959 high of 6 feet.  Also disappearing from the record book was the name of Strasburg's George Gessner, who in 1958 raced the half mile run in 2:09.4 minutes.  Jeff Martin, Tuscarawas Valley's strong-striding distance man bettered Gessner's time with a 2:09.2 clocking in addition to winning the mile for a meet high of 12 points.  Teaming for a new mile relay standard was Strasburg's crack combination of Ed Becker, Mike Rieger, Ray Wallace and Ed Yackey.  Their 3:42.8 time topped the  3:43.4 mark established a year ago by Tuscarawas foursome of Phil Myers, Phil Caldwell, Russ Ashkettle and Joe Migoni.  Port Washington's Jeff Huston, enroute to 3 blue ribbons for 18 points, snapped Purple Rider Mike Cappel's record heave of a year ago in the discus.  Huston threw it 115 feet 7 inches, topping Cappel who had a 98 feet 7 inch toss.  He also won the shot put and 75-yard dash.  Allen Wertz of Tuscarawas Valley rounded out the record performances, racing to a 25.9 second time in the 220-yard dash, besting Strasburg's Mike Rieger who ran it in 27.1 seconds in 1963.
