65 - Huggins Gets Strasburg Job

                                                     Charles Huggins

STRASBURG - Charles Huggins, Ohio's Eastern District Basketball Coach of the Year for his efforts at Stone Creek High during 1964-65, has been named the new basketball coach at Strasburg High.  He was hired last night to replace Robert (Pete) Shahan who resigned.  Shahan's future plans have not been announced.  "Strasburg has a fine tradition of fine basketball," Huggins said this morning.  "I only hope we can keep the standard as high in the next few years.  "Every job has its problems, but I hope to feel things out and see what happens."  Strasburg was 22-2 and 12-8 under Shahan.

Huggins is noted for his excellent defensive teams at Stone Creek the past 2 years, but indicated he may alter his plans and go with a more diversified attack at Strasburg.  "You have to adjust your plans to your personnel," he said.  Huggins took over a losing program at Stone Creek in 1963 and immediately produced fine results.  His team that season was 14-9 and advanced to the finals of the Sectional-District Tournament at Dover.  That represents the best tournament showing of any Stone Creek quintet.  This past campaign, the Panthers won 17 and lost just 4 for the best in the history of the school.  Huggins also was named Tuscarawas County's Class A Coach of the Year last season.  Huggins was left without a job when Stone Creek decided to merge with New Philadelphia as of July 1st.

Huggins was assistant to Pete Hilliard at Midvale from 1958 through 1961 and was Head Coach at Cheat Lake High at Morgantown, West Virginia, in 1962 where his team had a 10-6 slate.  His Junior High teams at Midvale won 51 and lost 7 over 4 seasons.  He piloted Midvale's Junior High tracksters to county crowns in 1959, 1960 and 1961 and led the high school thin-clads to the title in 1962.  Huggins was graduated from West Virginia University in 1957 where he was named to the all-conference basketball team his Junior and Senior years.
