LEESVILLE - Conotton Valley (7-8) exploded for an 11-3 lead in the opening minutes, but trailed at the stop 14-13 and could never again catch the Bengals (15-1).  A late surge by the Rockets in the final quarter cut the closing margin to 12.  Sharp-shooter John Peters led the Tigers with 26 points and now has a total of 385 for the season.  Rock Van Fossen backed Peters up with 16 markers, Rick Hall added 14 and Vic Gessner got 13 in a well rounded attack.  Conotton Valley also had four players in double figures for Errol Jacobs' Rockets with Ernie Smith leading the way popping 20 points.  Jim Monigold got 14, Connor 13 and Ken Newell 10.  Strasburg struck for 28 field goals in 64 tries for 44 percent and made 19 of 26 charities.  Conotton Valley hit on 26 fielders in 85 atttempts for 31 percent and made 11 of 16 free throws.  Hall pulled down 21 rebounds for the Bengals as they snagged 48 off the boards to 31 by Conotton Valley.  The Conotton Valley Reserves brought down the mighty Strasburg Reserves (14-2) 47-44, Strasburg's only 2nd loss of the entire season.

64 - Midvale Buries Killbuck 85-60 (2-1-64)

MIDVALE - Pete Hilliard's Midvale Blue Devils (14-3) routed Killbuck here Saturday night in a make-up game of November 23, canceled because of the death of President Kennedy.  The Blue Devils had little trouble; especially, after intermission as they hiked their halftime lead to 60-44 at the 3rd stop.  DeMattio again was the chief weapon employed by Hilliard, the fine-shooting Senior getting 32 points.  He now has 449 for the season.  Running mate Dan Kohler gave ample support with 23.  Tom Daniels added 10.  Seventeen of DeMattio's points came in the last canto.  Midvale connected on 37 of 71 action shots for 52 percent and swished 11 of 14 foul tries.  Killbuck was 23 of 55 for 42 percent and 14 of 29.  DeMattio and Kohler also were the top board men, the former getting 13 rebounds and the latter 9.  Killbuck's only advantage was 4-2.  Midvale's zone and halfcourt press proved to be very effective.  The Midvale Reserves (8-6) downed the Killbuck Reserves 52-46 to start the night off.

64 - Tusky Valley Defeats Dover St. Joseph's 81-65 (2-1-64)

ZOARVILLE - A nifty press by the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (8-8) befuddled Dover St. Joseph's here Saturday night and the Ramblers (6-8) fell 81-65.  Art Teynor's charges battled bravely, especially in the 1st frame.  But, they just couldn't cope with the slick-working Trojans.  Leading 16-15 with 23 seconds left in the initial frame, the Ramblers saw their advantage quickly disappear as the Trojans stole the ball several times off the press and took a 25-19 margin at the stop.  Continuing their thievery in the 2nd stanza, Ken Gold's men led 42-33 at the half and went into the final frame on top 55-47.  Then the roof really caved in on St. Joseph's as big Bill Held, 6-5 Senior center, went  to the bench with 4 minutes left because of personals and teammate Roger Lammers joined him with 2 minutes remaining.  Ramblers Mickey McCracken and Ron Rieger already were on the sidelines.  They both went out late in the 3rd canto.  Held and Lammers ended with 17 points each.  This is a season low for Held who entered the contest with 360 markers.  Held now is just 19 points away from a season record for a Rambler.  Tom Young poured in 396 points during the 1961-62 campaign.  McCracken's 15 points represents his season high.  Leading the way for the Trojans was Gary Ferren with 26 markers.  He had able support from Dave Widder 22.  Paul Shipbaugh popped in 13 and Ron Wolfe 12.  The Art Teynor-coached Ramblers zeroed in on the nets 22 times in 56 tries.  The Trojans got one less field goal in 67 attempts, but cashed in at the foul lines by making 39 of 50, while the Ramblers were sinking 20 of 27.  Held led all rebounders with 20.  Ferren pulled down 18.  The Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (6-8) out lasted the Dover St. Joseph's Reserves 36-33.

64 - August 72 - Tusky 61 "Tusky May Protest" (2-1-64)

PHOTO:  Tuscarawas High School Junior - Ken Rankin

AUGUSTA - Tuscarawas High Coach Dick Ronald (8-8) said he may protest Saturday night's loss to Augusta here because of what he called "questionable calls" by official Alex Pilati of Alliance.  "He was constantly picking on the boys," Ronald said.  Only 4 Broncos were on the floor at game's end.  Two had fouled out and 2 more had been thumbed out when tempers flared late in the game.  "We were taking it all night," Ronald commented.  Tuscarawas led 16-14 at the 1st stop, but trailed 33-28 by halftime and was behind 50-46 going into the last quarter.  Phil Caldwell led the Broncos with 16 points.  Russ McGlothlin and Richie Eckhardt both played only about 2 quarters because of personal fouls.  Eckhardt, who got 7 of his 8 markers in the 3rd quarter, quickly drew 3 personals and was forced to the bench.  The Tuscarawas Reserves (13-2) flew by the Augusta Reserves 67-51.

64 - Gnaden Gets By Scio 60-52 (2-1-64)

GNADENHUTTEN - Clutch work by Senior Rick Fellers sparked Gnadenhutten (6-12) to a victory over Scio here Saturday night.  The 5-8 Senior came off the bench in the final frame as regulars Bill Kohl and Larry Rentsch were saddled with 4 personals and tallied all 9 of his points.  Oren Thompson's Tribe fired through 23 of 54 action shots for 45 percent and made 14 of 20 charities.  Scio was 21 of 54 for 39 percent and 10 of 25 respectively.  Gnadenhutten was ahead all the way; although, its biggest lead was 6---in the 2nd and 3rd periods.  The 2 teams were even in rebounds with 34.  Rentach and  Bill Kohl each grabbed 9.  Bill Kohl paced the Indians with 16 points.  Bruce Kohl got 14 and Rentsch 12.  Good hustle overcame 20 turnovers.  The Scio Reserves whipped the Gnadenhutten Reserves (6-8) 50-36 earlier.

64 - Strasburg Crushes Tusky Valley 72-49 (1-31-64)

PHOTO:  STEADY AS A ROCK.  Strasburg's Rock Van Fossen, a steady performer all season, grabs a rebound during battle with Tuscarawas Valley Friday night.

PHOTO:  DID IT GO IN?  Vic Gessner of Strasburg lets fly with a field goal attempt in Friday night's game against Tuscarawas Valley.  Others in photo are Tiger Rick Hall (44) and Trojans Bob Cappillo (33) and Dave Widder (behind Gessner).  Strasburg won 72-49 to keep tied with Midvale for the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball League lead.

STRASBURG - It was a "fans' delight" here for a while---until the Tigers (6-1) (14-1) began finding the hoops with their usual accuracy.  Tuscarawas Valley (5-2) (7-8) held a hot hand during the 1st half especially in the 2nd stanza.  Trailing 18-14 at the 1st stop, the Ken Gold-coached Trojans waxed hot to take a 30-28 margin at intermission.  From then on it was all John Peters and company as Strasburg exploded for a 50-36 advantage going into the last canto.  Peters, highest scoring Tiger for the season, got 16 points, but had to take a back seat to teammate Don Wallick who got 19.  Tiger Rock Van Fossen added 15, Vic Gessner popped in 12 and Rick Hall struck for 10.  Dave Widder led Tuscarawas Valley with 11 markers.  Gary Ferren, Paul Shipbaugh and Bob Burris all had 10.  Ferren, still bothered by infected tonsils, came in in the 2nd stanza, but played only partly because of personal fouls.  The Tigers, who canned 50 percent of their action shots in the 2nd half, ended with 28 of 73 for 40 percent.  They made 16 of 29 charities.  The Trojans were 20 of 51 for 39 percent and 9 of 15.  Strasburg led in rebounds, 37 to 23, with Hall grabbing 14.  Ferren hauled down 7.  In the Reserve game, Straburg (14-1) continued to roll along by beating back Tuscarawas Valley (5-8) 52-47.

64 - Down The Line With Dan Kopp

DOVER - Tuscarawas Valley, we found, did not set a school record Friday in beating Baltic 99-46.  A letter from a graduate of Tuscarawas Valley set us to the "morgue" where we found the 1956-57 Trojans went over the 100-point level twice.  That was the 1st year of the consolidation of Mineral City and Bolivar and the coach was Raymond (Sucker) Low.  Getting back to the business at hand, Ben  Price and company that season tallied 105 points to 40 for Dundee January 15 and marked up 107 to 48 for Dundee February 1.  As far as we could determine, the 107 total is the school record.  We're sorry the mistake was made, but at the same time thankful to the reader who started us on the search.  Thisis the only way we'll be able to get our records up to date.

In years gone by, the captain of the team receive any "charity" and would get the points.  But not any more.  The  points merely go toward the team's total.  And the "wrong-way" player does NOT get credit for the points on his total.

64 - Gnaden Falls 79-70 To West Lafayette (1-28-64)

WEST LAFAYETTE - Gnadenhutten (5-12) battled all the way here Tuesday night only to lose a decision to tough West Lafayette (9-3).  The Indians, falling behind 9-0 at the outset, rallied and trailed only 20-14 at the 1st stop.  They kept pecking away at the Generals' lead and finally went ahead 38-37 at intermission.  After 3 periods the count was  knotted 56-all.  But, superior board work and a tight press ondefense gave the General the victory.  The Tribe of Coach Oren Thompson, rapidly improved over the early weeks of the season, played without high-scoring Gene Bates who has a chipped bone in his ankle.  He was resting in  an effort to be ready by tournament time.  Freshman Bill Kohl paces theTribe with 18 points, sharing  game  honors with Generals Warne and Hostetler.  Bruce Kohl, a cousin and  Don Garrett both got 14.  Medley, McCrea and Shivers all popped in 13 for West Lafayette.  Gnadenhutten hit on 29 of 74 action shots for 40 percent and made 12 of 24 free tosses.  West Lafayette was 34 of 74 for 46 percent and 9 of 18.  The Indians led in rebounds until the fial frame and actually pulled deown 51 to 46 for the Generals.  Larry Rentsch nestled in 17 and Bruce Kohl 13.  Reserve game no reported.

64 - Down The Line With Dan Kopp

DOVER - One of the most prolific scorers in Tuscarawas County is Midvale's Dean DeMattio who has 383 markers in 15 contests.  His average is 25.5.  John Peters of Strasburg has 343 in 14 for 24.5.  Peters is the top point-maker inthe Count class A League with 152 in 6 for 25.3.  DeMattio  has 130 in 6 for 21.6.

Three county schools:  Baltic, Gnadenhutten and Port Washington have no chance for an even split this season.  Baltic is 0-14 with 3 games left, Gnadenhutten is 5-11 with 4 remaining and Port Washington is 3-9 with 5 to go.  Those assured of breaking even or better include:  Garaway (10-5) and 3 left, Midvale (12-3) and 3, and Strasburg (13-1) and 4.

KOPPY'S KORNER - A basketball score of 2-0!  That's what fans watching the Sumner, Oklahoma High and Coyle High game saw.  Coyle, a 78-52 loser to Sumner earlier in the season, stalled the ball for the entire 1st half and the teams went into their lockerrooms tied 0-0.  Sumner's Gary Yoise "borke the game open" early in the 3rd period with his team's 1st and only shot.  Coyle waited until the final 2 seconds to take its first shot---and missed.
