SUGARCREEK - Aggressive defensive play and a controlled offense paid rich dividends for the Glenn Snyder-coached Pirates (4-1) (7-5). Going into the fracas knowing they couldn't match shooting eyes with the talented Tigers (4-1) (11-1) of Bob Shahan, the Pirates tried to keep the tempo slow most of the time. Although behind most of the way, the poised Tigers never showed concern until the fading minutes when victory for them seemed in doubt. Until that time, they still appeared confident they could pull out a victory. Strasburg went into the game raked 8th among Ohio's Class A schools, with 1 first-place vote. Garaway was 6-5. The loss left Tuscarawas County without an undefeated quintet. The score changed hands 6 times and was tied on 3 occasions. Strasburg's last lead was 30-29 with just under 2 minutes left in the 3rd canto. Both teams played well, but it was the ball handling of Pirates Don Deetz and Jim Young, the board work of Dan Andreas and the driving ability of Randy Miller that turned the tide. Strasburg's chief weapon was steady Don Wallick who did his best to take up the slack caused by the Pirate defense which held high-scoring John Peters to 13-points--still a fine piece of work, but not up to par for him. Six of Peters' points came on long shots in the final frame as it looked as if he might be able to put new life into his mates. Strasburg actually outgoaled Garaway 20 to 17, but the slick-working Pirates drew 26 personals and sank 26 of 38 from the chairty stripes. The Tigers, on the other hand, got just 14 attempts and made only 5. Miller, who came through with some fine drives for points, took game honors with 18. Young got 12 and Andreas 10. Tim Stevanus rounded out the scoring for Garaway with 4. Wallick, who looked mighty tough under the boards, got 15 to pace the Tigers. Peters was held to his season low of 13. Rock Van Fossen got 7 before fouling out late in the final frames. Garaway sank 17 of 46 action shots for 38 percent. Strasburg was 20 for 55 and 36 percent. Andreas led both teams in rebounds with 14. The Strasburg Reserves (11-1) rolled on with a 59-47 victory over the Garaway Reserves (3-7).
